I once ran a one-shot where the party had to free a village from its monstrous local lord named Shepet. Lord Shepet also had a wolf type lycanthrope and a semi-intelligent flesh golem in his castle. Party actually managed to convince the flesh golem to turn on Shepet. It was great.
I still have fond memories of a Warhammer Fantasy horror one shot I ran a long time ago. The adventurers were stopping at an inn to get a respite from the heavy rains that had soaked, but once they got inside and by the light of the fire they found out they were not soaked in rainwater, but in blood! I had a Slaneesh cult conducting a ritual in the attic, and after some great horror tropes (a PC took a woman of the night to bed only to awaken part way through the night to find that her head had been severed while she slept next to him), they confronted the cult and the demon they had summoned.
What really kills horror in one-shots, are the players and GM constantly going out of character, having a conversation between them, asking questions to a GM that isn't there, instead of roleplaying. You can have a good time while being scared in-character.
I remember breaking out Mansions of Madness for some good Call of Cthulhu one shots. I've had a few ideas for horror themed mini campaigns but I've never gotten to try them out.
Every October I make it a point to put on Horror films even if it’s background noise. Today I watched Dracula Prince of Darkness and Taste the Blood of Dracula. Abbot Sandor would be an awesome cleric template in a Ravenloft adventure.
Nice job. Funny I remember reading The Devil Rides Out in books in tape from the library as a kid. And also odd I just finished revisiting the audiobook now narrated by Christopher Lee like 4 weeks ago!
I’d like to see more of this kind of content. I know talking about the craziness of WOTC is kind of your thing but I feel that to the majority of your audience it’s just preaching to the choir. Practical advice from someone who actually knows what they’re talking about and isn’t just a cosplayer pretending to be into DND. That’s the good stuff!
I appreciate the compliment, thank you. Unfortunately the analytics (views, click through, etc) prove the opposite of what you say. Regulars want as much of the WotC drama, culture war, etc. as they can get. And that's fine! I like doing both types of content.
I`m about to run a horror-themed one-shot next week at a local event and your insights will certainly be very helpful. Thanks once again for the great content!
Please, In the name of heaven, don't do the party traitor thing. Drive the player insane during play and then have him turn quietly on the party. The fact that the players will know this has happened, but their characters don't will ratchet up the tension.
"Human sacrifice! Blink dogs and displacer beasts living together! Mass hysteria!"
😅

That sounds fantastic! I love doing those types of games around this time of year!

I have MoM and love to read it every so often!
@@DiversityDragons Me too, they almost feel like Lovecraft inspired short stories.
Mad respect with the Hammer Horror opening Double D... Mad respect...
I worked some Horror "Side quests" into my regular D&D game year ago. the party learned to fear dolls.

Love that character!

Nice horror experience you got there. It would be a shame if someone were to play an X card because they get triggered by everything
@0:24... lol, Strahd.
😄 Good to see you Katy!
