Great story! I’d like to know if there was a response from the Japanese? Did they look for survivors? If not, did they radio their command to look for any? Did they even know what had happened when the spilled fuel ignited on their starboard quarter? It seems that it would have been profitable from an intelligence viewpoint to take prisoners.
