  • These are some of my top opinions and impressions of New Zealand after a year of travelling and living here. Some might be slightly controversial but I like to remain honest and upfront on this channel to hopefully help others who are looking to move here. A lot has changed since my first impressions video but have my opinions? See below for my previous "impressions" videos.

COVID has had a HUGE impact on New Zealand socially. The friendly nature of New Zealanders has also been degraded over the past 7-8 years with the cost of living crisis, compounded by mass immigration, there is also now a significant housing crisis. It's hard to say as a kiwi, but NZ has changed a lot.
Also re driving, it's NZ law that if you are driving below the speed limit you MUST pull over and let cars pass at the soonest opportunity.
"If you are travelling slower than the speed limit and there are vehicles following you, you must:
keep as close to the left side of the road as possible
pull over as soon as it is safe to let following vehicles pass.
Don’t speed up on straight stretches of road to prevent following vehicles from passing you."

You are so off ur charts mate. Just like another kiwi living in a bubble.
I honestly applaud this Canadian girl for having the courage to talk about the deep rooted issues.
Biggest problem we have is we just brush off all the sceptics and move to square one asap.
If u say we are doing something wrong it is seen as anti social here. Rather than acknowledging the reality and fixing the problem.
For someone who has been here almost 2 decades. We are a small ship yet will take our biggest time for any new ideas.
We have no idea how our economy works, fyi we dont even know why we pay tax. I have not seen any law in Nz that states kiwis have to pay tax. Politics have done well to divide us.

@spandexvacation1097 socially the cost of living crisis has caused issues, immigration uptake has added to the housing crisis. I was not implying immigration is to blame for social erosion, just a bifactor.

Italian here living in NZ for 10 years.
It’s a fantastic place to live and I am so happy I made the move and got lucky to be able to make this my new home.
I agree on lots of points you made here. After the initial excitement wears off you become aware of things that could improve or just aren’t up the standards we are used to in our home country.
-Meat pies aside, most of the food here being UK inspired, are spectacularly bland and boring. Also no variety in regional cuisine. You get the same food in Invercargill as in Whangarei up north.
NZ drivers, like drivers in countries where driving school isn’t mandatory are awful! 20% drive like they’re on the lead lap at Daytona, while the rest is going 20 below the speed limit entirely oblivious of the road code or driving etiquette.
Lots of the kiwi friendliness among strangers seems very performative. While everyone is compelled to ask how it is going, nobody actually cares.
Still, the relaxed lifestyle and stunning nature make up for the minor nitpicks as no place is perfect. NZ is much better than most!

As a fellow Canadian who also lived in New Zealand for a year Brittany speaks alot of truth here! Very similar experience.
Everyone's perspective will be different as no two people are the same. I found both Canada and NZ extremely similar in many ways. Theres pros and cons to both and depending on your personal situation you might prefer one to the other.
My top pro NZ pointers would be
    - The scenery is truly magical everywhere you go. It casts a spell on you. 8 years out of NZ and I still regularly invision how beautiful it would be to live life there. The weather is also amazing. Not blazing hot and not freezing cold.
    - Peoples lack of consumerism and competing with their neighbors. I'll even throw in lack of care for social media. Its just not a big thing over there lol.
    - The ability to have extremely crazy out of this world adventures whenever you want right in your backyard.
My NZ cons (as a North American)
    - PAY and cost of living. This will be different for everyone but in my particular profession just wow... About a 50% or more pay cut. My day to day life was severely chopped down.
    - Isolation. You start to feel almost like your stuck. You do have everything you need packed into such a little place but the accessibility to travel is pricey and far. Also having family in Canada the time change is a huge adjustment. And like Brittany said if you like sports than its a really big adjustment.
    - I just genuinely felt like I went backwards in time during my stay. "Less is more" is kinda the vibe. People are happy and I'm truly jealous they get to call New Zealand home but for the average person it just seems like people had a lot less. Houses/properties were WAY smaller, cars older etc.
Final thoughts. If you think with your brain I think Canada would speak to you more on a personal level because of the opportunity but if you're someone who thinks with your heart than New Zealand will definitely grab a hold of you.
If I ever won the lottery I would 100% be back in NZ permanently.

    • @brittanymorgan09
      @brittanymorgan09  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Great comment! Your points really resonated with me. If I had a boat load of money and no ties in Canada I think I could easily live here happily. The scenery is incredible but BC and Alberta give it a run for it's money.
I think the more the message is put out there that NZ isn't perfect and has some flaws will encourage folks to try it first before committing to a permanent move here. Travelling to NZ and living here is a vastly different experience.

Also a kiwi, and grew up up in Nelson. Totally agree on the racism / xenophobia thing. Was totally immersed in it as a kid growing up there. SO gross.
I've spent a few months in Canada and my limited experience was that Canadians were _so_ kind and welcoming and yes, friendly.
But I've also spent a year in NL and i think being an "outsider" in any culture just makes it harder to make friends because people already have established friendships etc.
Hope the rest of your travels go well!

That's really upsetting to hear it was ingrained in your life growing up here. I think I've always lived near/in bigger cities in Canada and those are always melting pots so I grew up with many different people race wise. I think if we lived in Auckland or Wellington we would have had a much different experience finding friends. Luckily, we've made a few life long friends in NZ that we'll visit in the future!

As to the windiness- the thing in Nelson is just getting your head around the fact that almost like clockwork in summer the northerly (sea breeze) kicks in hard between 2-3pm. Almost always the mornings are calm so if you want to go for a beach walk or a bike ride or whatever, just get it over with by early afternoon. Probably half of the time the wind dies off significantly by 6pm so you still get a few more hours of daylight to enjoy after that without the wind. If you are here another month you'll probably notice the wind will start easing off in the next two weeks so it should be more to your liking right around the time you leave!

    • @brittanymorgan09
      @brittanymorgan09  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

So true!! It's been very calm in the AM lately and that's been really nice. I've already notice a significant decrease in wind during the day in the last few weeks so I think March will be quite nice. When we first moved here a couple of people said the wind will go away at the end of October which was just not true LOL. It's so easy to get burnt in the sun when it's windy like that.

The old school NZ gangs were actually not that bad, most had jobs and worked, I worked with several guys from different gangs, all good people at heart. The problem now is in part due to Australias deportation legislation, a lot of "501's" who have been influenced by the american style gang culture in Australia have been deported back to NZ, some left here as infants but get sent back anyway. The new influence of these returnees has changed the NZ gang culture.

I'm Canadian. While I've never been to New Zealand or Australia, I've heard from friends who have that Kiwis are closer to Canadians, inthat they're quite reserved and a but standoffish until they get to know you, whereas the Aussies are more like Americans in being extroverted and gregarious. New Zealand probably doesn't have good pizza because they haven't had much immigration from Italy. Canada and the US have both received a lot of immigrants from Italy over the decades.

Australia only gets the racist label because over 30% of the population is foreign born, and the locals are sick and tired of not being able to afford housing.

Wait to u get to the north island and you'll see how much of a plague gangs are in the smaller towns/cities in the east coast and northland, its really quite shocking. But as long as you keep to yourself or don't wear the wrong colours you should be fine. The reason these gangs formed was from all the maori who struggled to fit into society, and find work when they moved from rural areas into the cities/towns. So they pretty much just banded together in a similar way their ancestors in tribes did, the tribal/"gang" culture was already there so it just took off. Now we have the most gang members per capita in the world. But at the same time they half behave like a tribe or way of life/culture than a gang.... I don't really have a point tbh, just find it very interesting to talk about😂

16:00 reason why many of the boys got deported back to nz is bc there was a kiwi who was the most hated in australia for knocking out an aussie. 3 guys took on 1 for absolutely nothing. The kiwi was bragging and laughing at his court case with reporters as he was only ordered a fine around $300aud. He pissed of the public of Australia so much his case got over turned and immediately got deported. This opened up a wave of kiwis being deported from aussie back to nz if they were in jail or committed crimes/ associated with gangs. I'm Maori myself and the gang culture here destroyed alot of the boys future endeavors in aussie. So much lost potentiaI. I highly recommend applying for a visa in aussie you can make alot of money in a year.

I grew up in NZ, but spent about 30 years in Australia.
When I came back to NZ, I was surprised how much it had changed. People are racist here now, not really bad, or in a concerted way, but just generally, that never used to be the case. Passive Aggressive is certainly a thing that didn't use to be a thing. Money is far more important than it was, and the government tries to control people and everything that happens. There are hundreds of weird little court systems that people use to take advantage of things... I had a plumber who came over and did nothing, thehn gave me a bill for $1200. I of course refused to pay for nothing, next thing I know this stupid jumped up little cour system had me entangled in it. usually the judges just split whatever the difference is, and the companies know this... after alot of nonsense I managed to talk then down to $180 (for doing nothing for half an hour). There are many versions of these and it is not good. The police can do anything they like, there is a bill of rights that is fine, except it is over ridden by any other law, so in effect it means nothing.
The government became horrible during Covid, the media worked at splitting the community... it was terrible.

This is the exact defensiveness I talk about in videos like this. We've made life long friends in New Zealand and look forward to visiting them here in the future. Are you born and raised in New Zealand? If so, I'm not sure how you could possibly have the perspective of someone foreign moving to this country and trying to make friends with locals. It's much easier in cities and much easy for extroverts to do. It's a topic that gets discussed a lot in forums about moving here. It doesn't mean Kiwi's aren't friendly, just not as much as I expected based on conversations with people who travelled here in the past. The world has become a lot less friendly unfortunately, including Canada.
Do you not know about the 501 deportations from Australia? Or for example that in "New South Wales, biker clubs are classified as "declared criminal organisations" under the Crimes (Criminal Organisations Control) Act 2009".
