When they are sent to the cages, the Janitor wraps them up alive and sends the children to the kitchen to be cooked. Once the children have been cooked, they are served to the Guests. Once the Guests are so fat that they can't even move, they are killed so that they can be served to other Guests. Children are still the main course.

Something that occurred to me: what if the moving conveyor of meat hooks is not taking the children to the kitchens to be cooked - but to safety? The usual assumption is that the children are raised in this prison until they are ready to be eaten. The Janitor wraps them up (alive) and hangs them on meat hooks to be sent to the kitchen, where they are prepared, and finally served to the Guests. But we can't exactly be sure that the conveyor is taking the children to the kitchens (you don't see the Chefs taking them down and unwrapping them). In the kitchen and guest area, nothing definitely suggests that the meat being cooked and eaten there is child meat (much of it is way too big to belong to a child). And the shoes in the shoe room are all adult shoes, not children's - so definitely mass-adult-slaughter, but not mass-children-slaughter. So ultimately, we can't really be sure where the packaged children on meat hooks are being sent. The "friendly Janitor" theory is already extremely popular (who knows what makes this guy so weirdly likeable?) and it looks like I'm feeding the fire, but here goes: The conveyor may be designed to transport something else. Luggage or whatever. The Janitor is using it as a means to smuggle the children out of the Maw, Monte Cristo-style. Which is why he packs them up alive. In all other areas, he does his job, preventing the children from escaping - which makes sense in a way, since all the children besides Six die trying. The Janitor may know that the only way to escape is by that luggage conveyor, so that's where he sends them on their way. You'll notice that the children being wrapped up don't struggle - probably because there's no fight left in them, but maybe because they know that they're being helped. So the reason why he chases Six is a) she is just another child trying to escape - but b) she runs into him while he's doing something illegal. He's terrified that the regime will find him out. So the Janitor's persistence in hunting down Six - even stupidly groping for her despite the danger of his arms being amputated - would be understandable on a whole new level.
I know this is a two year old comment, but i wanna point out that the reason the friendly janitor theory is so popular is because if you die to all the other bosses they all show your death: the leeches grab onto you and suck your blood, the chefs put you in soup or the oven or etc, the guests are shown to eat you, and the lady levitates you and sucks away your soul. But the janitor is the only enemy never shown explicitly killing you or doing anything violent really, it always fades to black when youre in his hand.

I think the Janitor is the most interesting character on a moral level since he is clearly coded as a victim (physically and maybe mentally handicapped, hypersensitive, terrified of loud noises) as well as a villain. He helps carry a system that may have broken him to fit among its cogs - he is not here entirely by choice. But can he be excused because of that? My conveyor belt theory was mostly prompted by the fact that the game and its creators were intentionally vague about where the children are brought :)
the janitor is easily the scariest character i've seen in any video game regardless of genre in my _life_. i'm personally always terrified of blind characters that rely on touch, smell, and hearing in games since it's so unnerving to know that they can hear you walk around. but i can't help but feel pity for him at the end. the muffled screams of pain after his arms get sliced clean off by the door make me feel some kind of guilt that i shouldn't have since i haven't even played the game.

I love the Janitor he is my favorite character. I like how in the game you can see him climb up and down from stuff. That is very interesting to see to be honest. And the way he is walking around and navigating trough the maw is interesting as well

The thud and the pause you hear is likely him falling backward and then processing the horrendous pain before screaming. And now he’s trapped and unable to navigate, and will likely die from blood loss. I actually feel really bad for him. :(

I know this is real late, but I recently had played the 2nd game, but had never been able to play the 1st, even though it is my greatest plead to. I watched this, and holy crap do I feel sorry for the Janitor. I love the development, and the hat on the Janitor is such a perfect touch to his design; describing him in some way. Blind monster characters are always so freaking scary - I swear. The sniffing from the Janitor makes me feel so freaking uneasy, and there's times I feel bad for the actor that needed to make those sounds lmao. But the thing about the Janitor and how he goes out - makes me feel so sad for him. He's short - but his arms were long and was the only thing useful to him basically. Without his arms, who'd he be? How would be be useful on The Maw? Would they just eat the Janitor or throw him out of the ship? Who knows? I ultimately feel more bad for this character than any other monster in the games. Okay, maybe Mono's way to go out is more sad and pitiful, but Janitor takes 2nd bro, ain't no way y'all can disagree with me if anyone sees this.

I know this is real late, but I recently had played the 2nd game, but had never been able to play the 1st, even though it is my greatest plead to. I watched this, and holy crap do I feel sorry for the Janitor. I love the development, and the hat on the Janitor is such a perfect touch to his design; describing him in some way. Blind monster characters are always so freaking scary - I swear. The sniffing from the Janitor makes me feel so freaking uneasy, and there's times I feel bad for the actor that needed to make those sounds lmao. But the thing about the Janitor and how he goes out - makes me feel so sad for him. He's short - but his arms were long and was the only thing useful to him basically. Without his arms, who'd he be? How would be be useful on The Maw? Would they just eat the Janitor or throw him out of the ship? Who knows? I ultimately feel more bad for this character than any other monster in the games. Okay, maybe Mono's way to go out is more sad and pitiful, but Janitor takes 2nd bro, ain't no way y'all can disagree with me if anyone sees this.
I do think Janitor is the cutest monster of them all XD
