Andy Kaufman invented The Foreign Man. It was a character that was so unique and what he did with it was so brilliant, it was inevitable they were going to make it into a running character. Like Pee-Wee Herman, Pauly Shore's "Weasel" or Ray J. Johnson. Andy Kaufman didn't like what they did with his Foreign Man--making him a sit-com character. He REALLY didn't like all these other actors doing the accent and making it all homogenized. But... Andy Kaufman is remembered. This show wouldn't have been what it was without him.
There is a scene with Latka's mother I wish I could find, where Simka asks Latka's mother for "the wisdom of her people" about getting married, and Latka's mother's comeback is just priceless. Taxi has some great scenes where two quirky characters play off each other.
Legend has it andy was coming back from a Tony Clifton gig when they the writers talked with him on the phone about ideas for a mom character. He acted as Tony and said, "get me a mom that I could make little Latkas with" and they rolled with it.... Since he only came into the studio on shooting days when andy came in he was weirded out by the idea of such a hot mom
You know where the two of them are headed after this scene😊. Afterwards, Alex consults Elane on how to deal with the situation, Elaine is shocked and criticizes him. Alex replies "She turned into an animal .... A GREAT ONE " 🤣🤣🤣
Susan Kellermann. No relation to Sally Kellerman (different spelling) but cousin of Barbara Kellermann. Susan appeared a few times in Starsky & Hutch as different characters over the series - I even saw her in an episode from Series 4 called Black and Blue earlier this evening...a very underrated and talented actress and clearly very funny here... Also, very attractive.
The writers of this scene expected the viewers to believe she and Latka lived in a one room log cabin in the woods with no electricity, no water, no heat, no gadgets, no appliances, no toilet , no telephone, no TV, no radio , and 2 buckets, 1 for gathering water from the stream, and 1 for use as a toilet . 🤣
When mother gravas explained to latka why she slept with alex, she sounded like a made up russian. But latka made up language was more gibberish. It wasn't sounded like a language at all.
I said the same thing I think she's one that played Trish in 50 First Date the one that played Adam Sandler's assistant at the animal thing they worked at together
Latka's mom was okay, but Simka was too much. Nothing against Carol Kane, but once Simka was introduced, the show ended for me. Still think, up to then, it's one of the greatest sitcoms ever. Nice to know James L. Brooks is still going strong.
It was supposed to be HIS show. He was the star because he was in a hugely successful play prior to Taxi. Andy Kaufman and Danny De Vito basically stole every scene and the show with it.
@@TheKitchenerLeslie And Christopher Lloyd comes on an steals scenes too, then gets Back to the Future after Taxi gets cancelled. And Tony Danza got his own megahit series with Who's the Boss soon after Taxi was cancelled. And DeVito did several popular movies in the 80s, including directing a couple of hits. Hirsch was the start, but is probably the least remembered from Taxi, along with Henner and Conaway.
Latka's mom, though! She's up there with Stifler's Mom!!
Bring us two small, dry, unappetizing looking hamburgers and 9 potato chips. Thanks!
garichar LMAO yeah these buns were clearly cold and straight out of the bag

Very sweet scene. 💞💞 Judd Hirsch was great in this role.
Who ever wrote this is an absolute genius...one of my favorite scenes of all time.
I've always thought the woman who plays Latka's Mom was a very sexy woman...

ALEX: "Look, Latka, what happened between your mother and I, it was indiscreet."
LATKA: "You mean you weren't even indoors?"
I love their made up language 😂 When Lakta and Laktas mom talk in their native language I can't take it 😂
Best sitcom of all time next to cheers
@@MobstahLobstahAbsolutely. Cheers and Taxi will never be beaten sitcom wise.
Lysdexic?
I loved this episode, especially when Latka’s mom tells Alex what his name means. ha ha ha
This lady playing his mom was only 5 year Andy Kaufman's senior in real life.

Kinda hot too.
One of the funniest TV shows ever.
Andy was the typical comedic genius, but was atypical in how far above the rest of the best that he was!

Genius show. Don't remember now why i didn't watch it then. 🤔 "was busy," said Latke.
Mom was great.
Faster then mcdonalds service
Did Latka say "butrus, butrus golly"?!?
What a great scene. Greta is over the top hilarious and Alex’s reactions are perfect. A writer’s strike would have actually meant something back then.
Poor old Lurgid
Classics flash back
That is a great comment !!!!
That’s not Andy’s real voice
Brilliant
How is shmopsie?...lol...God this show was hysterical
"One who makes nick-nick during harvest". AND everyone knew what she meant.
what did he mean? sex?
2:50 And everyone knew what she meant here as well.
In other words, "nick at nite"
I love how Latka and his mom seem to be the same age🤣 Brilliant comedy writing.
They do not seem to be the "same age." You're just not very bright!
You're welcome!

What nationality is Latka? I'm guessing some Russian?
It’s made up, the language he’s speaking is just gibberish.
Daayyy-O. Daayyaa-O.....
You play nic nic with Alex and no marry, then you're a.... You're a kackbolt!!!!!
eee bee da!
putdownan8dude...I was wondering why she looked so familiar

Judd Hirsch was a terrible casting choice. Such a downer.
