    The red and white flag once is a flag of majapahit's warriors. they used this red and white colored flag as a symbol of an oath that they made before they went to a war. the red color itself is from the blood. so they place an oath to won some battle and then cut their palm and smeared it onto the white cloth and there you have it the red and white flag.

    I just want to explain that Indonesia is not a Muslim country but country with the most populous Muslims, there are many religions in Indonesia but government only recognized 6 (Islam, Catholic, Protestantism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confusianism) -just as a reminder there are also small group of jews and mormon also kejawen in Indonesia - eventhough with this diversity, we are still as one and respect each other well...
    Many Indonesians accepted Islam because the practice in praying and conversion is quiet easy and there is not caste system like Hinduism in that time and also Islam spreads peace and there is not a strong evidence that Islam spread by conquest and mostly come from assimilation, marriage and peaceful dakwah ( religious teachings)

      Feynstein 100 There is a lot of history behind it. But mostly, Islam society don't have social hierarchy like Hindu society do, so the lower class likes the idea of being equal to everyone else, so they converted to Islam. Then the Mataram Kings realised there are powers behind this new religion called Islam, converted and conquest other kingdom in the name of Islam (it's like making casus belli to expand your kingdom). That's how Islam spreads in Java (Balinese Hindus are Javanese people that's escaping the Islamic conquest). There is also 9 desciples called Wali Songo, they spread Islam with local culture such as Wayang and Javanese style song and music, so the religion quickly adopted as it didn't change the people's culture, but changes people's status in social hierarchy. That's why Islam in Java is different from the one in Arab, or even in Sumatra.

    • @karenroseleaf917
      @karenroseleaf917 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Feynstein 100 Indonesian here. It's from the Arab/Indian traders and the Islamic Kingdoms spreaded out across the country (We had an era of Hindu and Buddist kingdoms before that). And especially in Java, there are these 9 important figures who introduced Islam even more across the island called "Walisongo". en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wali_Sanga
      Sorry if it's not a detailed essay in any way, middle school was years ago.

      That is according to the textbooks they use at schools, all those things about the arab and hindu traders came and spread their peaceful and caste-less religion, little did they know and do research that actually it was much more deeper and bloodier than that. The thing that Indonesia became islamized had some connections with the fall of Majapahit kingdoms, some also speculated about real invasion from islamic troops, thus making the 'traders peaceful conversion' only contributed very little. Just ask this question to yourself, Buddhism as the predominant religion at that time also offers non caste system and non strict religious values, why would your ancestors converted from this religion to islam all of the sudden?

    • @gibranagf2855
      @gibranagf2855 7 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Because they liked it? Anyway Buddhism wasn't very popular in Indonesia tbh. Majapahit was Hindu, and their kings converted to Islam in the end, those who refused to convert went to Bali, but Indonesian muslims couldn't care less about Bali after that. The only bloody Islamic history of Indonesia I can think of is Padri War, it's about Islamist vs Traditionalist in Sumatra

    Yo my history teacher said that the Indonesian flag is Red and White cause they were in such a rush to declare independence. Like seriously let me tell you a story.
    So as you know Japan lost to the UN in the summer of 1945, but the Indonesian Freedom Fighters didnt get word of this until the official statement heard from the BBC radio. Now the Freedom Fighters of Indonesia was basically split into two, the Young Generation and the Old Generation. The Old Generation wanted to wait a little bit to declare independence, while the Young Generation wanted to declare independence immidiately.
    So the Young Generation kidnapped Sukarno (first president of Indonesia and basically the head of the Freedom Fighters) and Muhammad Hatta (first vice president of Indonesia), took them into a house owned by a Japanese soldier who was an Indonesian sympathizer and basically begged them to make the proclamation of Independence. Somehow Sukarno did make the text, first handwritten then typed and had everyone in the room sign it.
    Because of the rushed nature of this situation they did not have a flag, the one they had prepared was unfortunetly too small. So Sukarno's wife, Fatamawati, stiched together a flag, the white from a bed sheet and the red from the tent of a soto vendor near Sukarno's house.
    So... yeah. Tbh I dont know if this story is real or not, regardless I just find it amusing.

    • @juanmaruli4977
      @juanmaruli4977 7 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      No, that's not true.
      The flag was made in 1944, when Japan want to gave Indonesia their independence, even though it's never happen.
      The fabric was given by Japan "Propaganda Department" head, and the flag design was inspired by Majapahit Empire's flag.

    Well, since i was little there are a lot of other opinion about the meaning of our flag, some you already mentioned on the video, but some people also would say that red stands for blood and white stands for bone, some other also say that red stands for palm sugar and white stands for coconut milk, two staple in indonesian cuisine...
    And I wish when you said the Hindu Kingdom you mentioned its name, Majapahit, but you didn't. No single thing about Majapahit even on the main episode, i really wish you mentioned it since Majapahit is the roots of modern Indonesia

      +Khairul Nagiub Abdullah Makes sense. But, If there are problems, can those "Malaysian" handle it? That's why the Former Prime Minister (Najib) is a corrupt Prime Minister. Because all they want is a sack of money, including Najib.
      And, after making the guide book, they should've double-checked it. Not releasing it before checking it first. That's funny, it's too obvious. Those Malaysians tried to get their revenge!

    As an indonesian.
    FUN FACT! : Lake Toba was formed from three major eruptions of Mount Toba. The first eruption produced a caldera on the south side, the second eruption formed a caldera on the north side, the third, the largest eruption, turned Mount Toba into Lake Toba.

    Too bad "Red" in Indonesian flag doesn't mean "blood for those who fought for the freedom" since Indonesia had been colonized by Portugese, Spanish, British (just for 5 years), Dutch, and Japanese combined for 350 years.

      Ernest Jay it does actually mean blood of the freedom fighters. At least according to my textbook from elementary school days. There's also a song like: Indonesia my homeland, the land I spill my blood on (for freedom?).

      433 or 350 are wrong answer. Because indonesia officially become a colony since 1816 until 1946 as Dutch east indies. Because before that, Spain, Portuguese, British and Dutch have their own territory. Like Spain and Portuguese in east side, Dutch and British in west side. Then Dutch get all of archipelago except Timor. That what my professor said according a book we learn in university.
