  • This video essay analyzes the end of Thomas Shelby from BBC's Peaky Blinders. After six seasons of Peaky Blinders, the finale has been aired and the end of the character Thomas Shelby is known. But it's not quite what we anticipated, so let's take a closer look.

    Simply put, this show is a fucking masterpiece and Cillian Murphy deserves all the praise in the world for his portrayal of Tommy. You know something is well written when you simultaneously don't want it to end, yet could not imagine a better ending. I honestly feel like the plot twist was that Tommy lived. Characters like him are usually expected to meet their end in the finale. Curses are a real thing in the show, and he just managed to lift the one that’s been plaguing him for 15 years at this point by the end. It’s very smart how the fate of his competitors isn’t seen in the finale, but even without the movie, we know what happens to them. Tommy always has plans that will unravel whether he’s there for them or not. Nelson just lost a lot of influence, and with Alfie’s intelligence, he will certainly lose more. Mosley ends up in jail in 6 years and we know Tommy’s been feeding Churchill information the entire time, which will probably be what gets him incarcerated when Churchill becomes Prime Minister. A smart way to have Tommy intimately involved but not directly enough to mess with history.

    In the 1st episode of Peaky blinders, Tommy kills a white horse. I believe that this is something us viewers have completely forgot. The contrast from him killing a white horse to finally riding free on one is beautiful. The symbolism gives me the chills.

    • @joshtonkin7684
      @joshtonkin7684 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Also, in the first episode, Tommy enters riding a black horse. The contrast between the black horse in the first episode and the white horse in the finale further symbolises (as you hinted) the cleansing of his past, and the changed nature of the character - a character that transforms from a cold, unemotional gangster (i.e. killing for the sake of “business”), to a man that spares another’s life (i.e. his doctor in the finale) for the sake of peace and solace. Brilliant writing by Knight and perfectly portrayed by Cillian Murphy.

    Something i noticed while watching the last episode, there's a lot of fire but no smoke surrounding Tommy - his caravan being set alight, no smoke. His mansion being blown up, no smoke, just rubble. I point this out because throughout the series, Tommy is constantly surrounded by smoke or fog, whether its the smoke from the factories as he's walking down a street or simply from his cigarette. There's even just dust in the air in some scenes (When he visits Alfie Solomons "bakery"). The only time you do see fog/smoke in the last episode is when the bomb goes off, but his mind would be clouded because Michael is family. A constant reflection of his mindset and a clarity that we as an audience reach as well as Tommy. Something you wouldn't notice until shown. Incredible writing by Steven Knight.

      The whole season was absolutely dreadful. Episode 1 set everything up, and episode 6 closed it. But the 4 episodes in between were just pointless filler. We didn't see enough of Tommy's daughter to care about her death. Michael's death was anti-climatic & predictable. Tommy spent an entire episode just going for a walk in the hills. Arthur was in a drug educed comatosed state for all of it. I know Mosley was a real life person, so couldn't do much there, but there was no retribution for the fascists or Boston gangster. And as for the "twist" ending, they only set it up in episode 5, so there wasn't much of a suspense until it was concluded an episode later.

That conversation was really the end of them, they went their different ways, his son from his first wife choosing to stay with Lizzie, “Because you’re a better mother than he is a father, he’s never here.” It’s true, Tommy missed so much of Charlie’s life. The final episode definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, is absolutely one of, if not the most thrilling and compelling episode of the entire fucking series, for SO MANY reasons, most of all for how much it developed and built upon Tommy's ever evolving character arc, in the span of a single episode no less, in such a more profoundly in depth and analytical way then had ever been done before. He goes through so much more in this single episode then he had throughout all of the previous five episodes of this series, and it was nothing short of magnificent to witness
    My favourite scene, without question, has got to be the farewell scene in the woods. The sheer level of raw, visceral emotion embedded in every single line of dialogue in that entire scene was absolutely immeasurable. The way Tommy spoke to Charles broke me to fucking pieces. The way Tommy's voice breaks as he desperately tries to tell Charles "I want you to be the better man that I could never be" but just can't because of how emotionally painful it is for him is just devastating to watch
    That ending man, jesus fucking christ, I was unable to breathe. They couldn't have possibly concluded the series in more powerful and thought provoking way in any sense. A true artistic masterwork of a remarkably written epilogue for a truly magnificent, masterfully crafted series. Now all that's left to do is wait a few years or so for the film to come out! Steven knight confirmed Tommy and Arthur are both coming back for the film so while I think your analysis up until the last part was spot on, I don't think he will abandon his family. Arthur is too fragile and suicidal for one, and he promised to tell Lizzie EVERYTHING. Moreover Ruby saved her father, but also his chance at being a real father not only to Duke, buy Charlie. In Charlie 's eyes he is nor redeemed. His war is over, yes, and a new future awaits him but the love that forced him to leave those he loved, esp not fight for Lizzie and Charlie, so they would not see him suffer and die, is now over. He can finally keep that last promise. Besides, he cannot play dead. Mosley knows his is alive so will all his enemies. The doctor will most certainly let them all know..so for me, the ability to play dead is not possible. Moreover he still has to combat fascism, that battle is not over. Perhaps working with Churchill in the movie.

He couldn't handle it and stopped resting - got back to his ways. In the end, when he spent a lot of time on his own in the field waiting to die he actually got better. Tommy had a great character arc and it concluded perfectly. However there are many other characters in the season who’s stories didn’t have anything resembling a conclusion. Jack Nelson, Mosley, Gina, Jimmy McCavern, Duke, Finn etc. I’ve accepted that the sixth season was mostly about Tommy’s conclusion and nobody else’s but man there’s so many unfinished stories. As an American I finally was able to see the ending unravel.
    My thoughts continue to linger on the tragedy that is Michael Grey. The innocent and ambitious small life man that only dreamed of being the man Tommy was, and in the end was his demise.
    We see so many stories of the tragic hero, but this show managed to give a perfect example of the tragic villain.
    Michael only wanted to avenge his mother's death that he blamed Tommy for, but in his many, many hours of thought of how he'd avenge her death throughout this final season... he still failed to undermind his mentor. Ultimately leading to his tragic death. Michael was not even remotely the monster Tommy was, and in the end it was his downfall. What a show.

    I loved the ending, it was perfect. Throughout the show, I especially like how he keeps saying he doesn't believe in superstition, but he actually uses superstition because even with the invisible and inexplicable coincidences, he can't let go of absolute control. So for him superstition is not and excuse of "oh well, I had no control over it, it was fate", but rather "it's in my hands, as long as I do what is required". Like when he's told the blue stone is cursed and he tries to convince Grace to take it off, even tho rationally he knows there's no curse, but for him it was like the russian woman knew he's a slave to control, so she was playing with him, knowing he wouldn't resist the urge to remove it from his wife's neck. So, in the end, I think that's telling, when he again believes he is sick and cursed and all that, and suddenly realises it was his obsession with control that brought him here every day of his life, bit by bit. He put himself in the metaphorical chains and kept telling himself "just one more time, just one more dirty job, and then it's all legal" over and over again. Remember that scene where the ghost-memory of Grace tells him "It wasn't the blue rock, Tommy, it was you".

    I experienced something similar, not that i could ever compare to the fame and fortune of a fictional character like Thomas Shelby... but i was a street hustler and a junkie, built an empire in my own way based around hatred and fear... all the people i truly cared for died or left me, estranged from what family still talked to me... at one point i too believed i was either cursed or the devil perhaps, fearing that anyone who got close to me would ultimately die to pay for the things i tied them to. Piece by piece things fell apart, i lost my kids...every friend turned against me...i watched my whole life burn, and what didnt burn i gave away hoping it would heal the terrible things i had done... it was my own death in a way, people call me by my old name and i constantly tell them "he died a long time ago"... its strange because i really liked Thomas Shelby for a long time, i stopped watching the series in season 4...and its funny that there have been some parallels and he too got to ride off at the end with a fresh start...it gives me hope..i own nothing and have no money, i just go from town to town trying to help when and where i can...i have seen enough death and enough greed, i have seen the absolute worst in humanity reflected through the window of my own soul...enough to last me a thousand lifetimes... wether its mental illness or an absolute in life one other thing i shared with this character is that we both see the souls of those who have passed on, and for whatever reason they have always helped to steer me away from danger... maybe im just crazy, and im ok with that, but there is more to this world than we realize and before my own time runs out i intend to find out as much as i can about what makes this planet we call home such a mysterious, yet amazing, place...

    It's worth noting also that if his family (especially Polly) had shut their traps and followed his orders, most of the tragedies could have been avoided.
    There's even a scene in some season where he screams "why does nobody f***ing listen to me!?" That kind of encapsulates the whole show.

    I don't think this season was average in any way, it almost felt like a slow burn western with exhilarating visuals, stunning music. This show like it's predecessors didn't relied on shock element and typical gangster stuff that we all expected instead it focused on human psychoanalysis, good and bad, time and death and resurrection. I think it was perfect in every sense whether it moved the story or not but it definitely did what it had to and i have no complaints.
