Hiyo part ya Major Dave Mutua saved the country is the best thing we have heard as his family.He is my uncle and a National hero.Funny thing is he had a British accent ,he was very well educated and sharp.Worked for NASA too.A genius in his days.He died very heartbroken in 2005.I hope he gets the honor he deserves one day

Luckily he was a Kamba, If he had been Luo or Kikuyu the 'system' would have destroyed him in a worse manner, Many Kikuyu and Luo in KAF who had no idea what was happening were tortured and detained, and some even jailed in trumped up charges. I still feel for them to this day.
My dad was in Kenya Air Force then; was detained and later jailed just for being a member of the Air Force. His life and that of our entire family changed forever. Thank you Abel. The 82 coup story only makes me cry, but today I laughed through it. Asante

I remember 82 we used to stay at the Kariokor flats. We were pepetwad with bullets, we had to lie down flat on the apartment floor for a good while. It was like Bosnia. Some neighbors got maimed for life. Ngara shops were looted like crazy. I remember cars being burnt & military guys taking cover in the mtaro. I remember uni guys chanting "The people united will never be defeated" That's one memory i'll never forget as a kid. We moved to a different part of town the next year. Wueh! Good job Abel for telling the story.

My Father Patrick Njuguna was an officer on duty on this very day guarding the offices at eastleigh airbase, was arrested, tortured and convicted by court martial and sentensed for 12 yrs for something he didn't know. Was later released and joined various security firms in the capacity of a supervisor the final one being kakuzi. What makes me sad is the fact that he died a miserable man, had tried severally follow up at Ulinzi house for the compensation given but to no avail. This story really makes me sad. May his soul rest in everlasting peace😢
Very sad for those implicated in the debacle. I remember every Airforce guy was hunted in the villages like a wild animal with chiefs competing to arrest them form their respective areas to gain favour with the government. Poor souls.

I was born back that year of coup d'etat, my late Dad had just returned from India where they had been sent to study aeronautics and upon his return he was posted at Moi Air Base (MAB) Eastleigh. Though he was innocent they had to go into hiding for fear of their lives, they were all asked to come out and when they did they went missing, My mum would go searching for him for months,she went through hospitals and morgues lakini wapi. I was months old and I fell very ill and I was dying and My fearless mum brought me to the base, she begged them to let my dad see before I die, they looked at me and phone calls were made and my dad was found, I was rushed to ICU as a floating head. Whenever my parents would narrate that coup it always sounded like a horror movie, most of dad's friends were dishonorably discharged after terrible torture, but after months of being rigorously court-martialed my dad was proved innocent and he continued working with Kenya Air Force where he rose to the rank of senior warrant officer II (WOII) till he passed on back in Mar 07 2004.

The "Bart" you have mentioned is Bart Joseph Kibati. Bart is his real name, it is short for Bartholomew. He shortened his name to "Bart" because Kikuyus used to pronounce his name as "Mathoromeo" and he did not like it. Bart has written a book titled "Memoirs of Kenyan Spymaster".

My dad was just a new recruit in Lanet barracks, 22 field workshop in that very year 1982 and he narrated to us this event as a witness.

I was born back that year of coup d'etat, my late Dad had just returned from India where they had been sent to study aeronautics and upon his return he was posted at Moi Air Base (MAB) Eastleigh. Though he was innocent they had to go into hiding for fear of their lives, they were all asked to come out and when they did they went missing, My mum would go searching for him for months,she went through hospitals and morgues lakini wapi.
I was months old and I fell very ill and I was dying and My fearless mum brought me to the base, she begged them to let my dad see before I die, they looked at me and phone calls were made and my dad was found, I was rushed to ICU as a floating head. Whenever my parents would narrate that coup it always sounded like a horror movie, most of dad's friends were dishonorably discharged after terrible torture, but after months of being rigorously court-martialed my dad was proved innocent and he continued working with Kenya Air Force where he rose to the rank of senior warrant officer II (WOII) till he passed on back in Mar 07 2004.

Abel good story. MAJOR David Cleophas Kavutti Mutua never celebrated for his works of saving our country, died heartbroken in September 12, 2005 and buried in his rural home Machakos, Mananja Village. Its a pity that the government never recognised their own. To my uncle May his Soul R.I.P
So sad. May his soul rest in peace, and may the state recognize him and fellow pilots for their acts of bravery even though posthumously
