    In the old days with training and flight exams we actually had to shut down and restart engines under VFR and simulated IFR. Most important part of an engine out is the feathering procedure if want the best hope to stay in the air.

      Still do. Just not on this flight.

    You have the patience of Jobe Mr Reese, I trust your student is not rated as a PIC in this Aerostar, he was constantly distracted, slow to diagnose which engine failed and hesitated on the procedures, took his hands off the controls and changed his focus to the goo on the windshield without finishing the the engine out emergency. He is good now! Had to shut one down for real after getting home. One of the turbos self destructed. He did a great job.

    Nice and great instruction. Too many of these great planes are trashed. Respect them and they’ll care for you. At least 4 fatal in the last 4 years, 100% pilot error.

    Important note: With an engine out in an Aerostar, MAKE SURE the ball is centered when lowering the gear. half a ball out will tear the gear doors attachments to the push rods. After being warned, I had a new hire do this on his first engine-out landing!

    What happened to the jet engined aerostar

      Still alive and well. It was flown recently. I am planning a video about the history of its completion by Aerostar Aircraft in Coeur d Alene, ID.

    I seem to recall VM telling me that w/one engine... he could climb out at 600 FPM. (Maybe it was 300FPM?). Thanks for the preview...

      I used to "know" that the 700P Superstar700 have the best single engine RoC of any piston twin at 500 fpm at max gross, but the official spec says it's only 383 fpm. So what does that mean? Senecas will do 300 fpm

    We're selling our Bo and moving up to an Aerostar 700. I was curious if it was ok to shut down an engine on a turbo-charged engine--I know that many Baron pilots are told not to do actual shut downs and instead opt for simulators. Interesting to see here you follow through with cutting it off.
    Btw, I grew up in the Tri-Cities and for a short while my mom and sister lived in Walla Walla (home of the Little-Giant Vacuum Cleaner Company). I just flew over you guys to Richland a few weeks ago.

      One might ask if you shut down your turbocharged engine after landing? Right? With proper cool down and warm up, there would be no problem doing so.

      @ibiufos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's certainly not a good idea to just shut down your engine down with a turbo charger without first letting the engine run down ,
      It's more important to let the turbo run down and cool for a couple of minutes that insures that the turbo is well oiled and a little cooler.

    Mr. Reese, I am a single-engine instrument-rated pilot, currently flying Lancair-ES,I am looking to get a multi Rating as well as planning to buy Aerostar for my training and hauling family. Do you give training in Aerostar?

    • @AerostarPilot
      @AerostarPilot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Raj. I do transition and recurrent training for clients in their own Aerostars. I am one of a few specialty trainers who are insurance approved to do so.

    The Aerostars poor safety history is a typical issue in todays general aviation: inexperienced pilots with too much money and not enough training by a competent, well qualified instructor current in type

    • @AerostarPilot
      @AerostarPilot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely right Murry. The Aerostar is actually a pretty forgiving aircraft if you have been properly trained. One of the things I will continue to do with this channel is to dispel the erroneous information about the type. Early on, lack of training and arrogance bent a lot of airplanes and caused a lot of pilots to end their flying careers too early.

    Yay favorite aviation vid back on again and soon too. Anyway with the 700 upgrade, did they ever do anything to resolve the problem with complete loss of oil in the engine when the turbo seal went bad and blew out all the oil.

    • @AerostarPilot
      @AerostarPilot  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might be referring to the original Superstar II conversion which used the 350hp Piper Chieftain TIO-540 J2BD engines. They had a single Garrett turbo. The later conversions, Superstar 700, have either the IO-540 S1A5mm or the IO-540 AA1A5mm engines STC'd for 350hp. the mm stands for Machen Modified. The Aerostars designated as the Super 700 have the TIO-540 U2A's. The Piper 700P has the U2A's but are counter rotating in the opposite direction as you would expect though. All the turbo'd Aerostars other than the Superstar II have two turbos per side. I am not aware of the oil problem you have mentioned.

    Another good one Eric. Is simulated zero thrust preferable to a full shutdown/feather/restart?

    • @AerostarPilot
      @AerostarPilot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer to do one complete shutdown as we did in your training. I don'l like doing it when it is below about 60°F. Things just cool off way too fast when the OAT is well below freezing.

      You should no more than double that on both engines.
