  • A reading of Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella "Rhapsody: A Dream Novel" also known as "Traumnovelle." This novella has been adapted to screen four times; first in the 1969 Austrian television movie "Traumnovelle," second in the 1983 Italian film "Il cavaliere, la morte e il diavolo" ("The Knight, Death and the Devil"), third in the 1989 "Nightmare in Venice," and finally and most importantly in Stanley Kubrick's final, and arguably greatest, masterpiece "Eyes Wide Shut" in 1999. Images in the video are taken from the 1969 television movie and from Eyes Wide Shut. This is the 1927 English translation by Otto P. Schinnerer published by Simon and Schuster.
Stanley Kubrick said of Arthur Schnitzler in 1960: "It's difficult to find any writer who understood the human soul more truly and who had a more profound insight into the way people think, act, and really are, and who had a somewhat all-seeing point of view - sympathetic if somewhat cynical." Kubrick said of the novella in 1972, decades before he was ready to film Eyes Wide Shut: "Traumnovelle is a difficult book to describe - what book isn't? It explores the sexual ambivalence of a happy marriage, and it tries to equate the importance of sexual dreams and might-have-beens with reality. All of Schnitzler's work is psychologically brilliant, and he was greatly admired by Freud."
So immerse yourself in the captivating world of Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella, Traumnovelle (Dream Story). This timeless classic delves into the depths of the human psyche, exploring themes of desire, identity, and the thin veil between dreams and reality.
Traumnovelle follows the story of Fridolin, a successful doctor in early 20th century Vienna, who embarks on a nightmarish journey through a world of sexual and moral ambiguity. After his wife, Albertine, confesses to having dreamed of an affair, Fridolin's sense of security and reality begins to unravel. His nocturnal adventures lead him through a series of increasingly surreal and dangerous encounters, challenging his perceptions of fidelity, power, and self-identity. As he moves deeper into this strange world he thinks back with affection to the stable world of his everyday realities. He feels the orderly social reality to which he belongs is some kind of monstrous sham.
