Not fun. I had a similar issue with my 9 year old front loader. Suddenly I hear odd swishing. Get to the washer with water coming out of the front door. I move the washer and find mold and mildew. What a mess. However that washer did a lot of heavy duty washing. BTW I used my 1966 Maytag wringer washer for about 3 years till I got a new automatic.
