I just saw the video in my timeline and directly decided to watch it. I dance ballet for a long time now and (of course) I happen to be a huge fan of Yuzuru Hanyu since I first saw him skate during a world championchip just before his first olympic medal. Literally none of my friends ever watched a figure skating performance yet I remember myself sitting there rooting for him after seeing him perform just a few minutes (I feel that that happened to all of his fans ;) ) A few years later I saw him live at the GP final in Turin in december last year and it meant the world to me.
To the whole conservatory: The Haru Yo Koi performance is just breathtakingly beautiful. The choreography at the beginning representing the fans being connected to the representation of cherry blossoms made me tear up a little. :) The way you combined a tribute to him as well as giving it your own colours is just wonderful and since Haru Yo Koi is my alltime favorite Yuzuru Hanyu - performance I cannot help to compare it. But seeing you all being inspired by his art and unique way to express himself through music and movements is somehow something that I think Hanyu himself would be incredibly happy to see. I´m always amazed by how people react to a video of his performance since it´s generally the same: I´m getting goosebumps or how can he do it so seeminglesly perfect? The way you analyzed demonstrates it very detailed and I´m going to show this video to all of my friends now so that they can get amazed a little more :D.
I truly wish you all the best and that these times we live in will pass fast. Thank you so much again and as a fellow Hanyu fan I hope that we can watch many more of his stunning works.

Thank you so much for sharing with us the similarities between Yuzuru Hanyu's skating and ballet. I really appreciate it! I am not sure if you know this but north american media often tries to mislead fans by depicting some of their skaters with ballet background as balletic when in reality there isnt really much of a connection. On top of that, many of Yuzuru antis would claim that Yuzuru is not balletic. However, from watching your video and other reading words from other global professional ballet dancers on how similar Yuzuru's skating resonates with ballet, I could affirm that he is balletic. Your passion really shines through when explaining it. I love the fact that professionals around the world are inspired by Yuzuru's technical and artistic skills. When a skater is truly great, they do not get exposed by professionals but instead, people could appreciate them more because these professionals, like you, are able to point out the level of difficulties the skater is doing. Yuzuru is truly an artistically gifted skater but he also works extra hard technically to make it look easy. His skating may be undervalued by judges but what he produces on the ice will always be a legacy.

I'm seeing this video for the first time and I'm excited. I have always loved classical dance despite not being able to practice it and for a few years I have been following Yuzuru Hanyu who I consider, like most Fanyu, the Ice Prince, number 1 in the world for technique, expressiveness, musicality and creativity. This conference made me It moved me so much that I saved the video in my favorites. The words of such an expert choreographer confirm to me that Yuzuru goes beyond simple figure skating. In conclusion, I found your choreography of Starry Night and Haru Yo Koi so splendid, delicate, centered, the costumes simple but enriched by the movements of the dancers which give that added value to the whole representation. Thank you for this precious gift and good work. Un saluto dall'Italia

These are some of the special things that he does so very well and set him apart even among skaters at the very top. Nevertheless, he is so much more than being technically superb. I still remember how moved I was when I saw Haru yo Koi in person in Helsinki (I think you'll enjoy this slow-mo version of it th-cam.com/video/1MXjpK2-LbQ/w-d-xo.html.) But when i listened to your explanation i was amazed about how detailed similarities they have; to the tips of his fingers!! Just Wow!! Thank you. -& sorry cause i know almost nothing about ballet moves-.
Now i really wish someone asks him just how much ballet research he did XD I'm curious!! As a painter I love his love for details so much, not only to his skating, but also his music, custom and very detailed moves which you notice sometimes after the 10th watch of the same program. It's ART. I always watch his programs on slow motion and still enjoy it very much!! It's shows how he's on point with the music.
One of Hanyu's aims for his skating was to look beautiful from every angle, because the rink is round. And i think he nailed this just perfectly. I'm his fan since 2014, but didn't had the chance to see him live.. hopefully one day 💕

Christina, thank you for your time and effort in making this video. So interesting and very educational to say the least. It's amazing how people in the performing art industry, both ballet artists and musicians, as well as world class athletes from other sports, in particular gymnastics, all marvel at the musicality of Yuzuru. His program is seamless, not broken into individual pieces of jumps and spins and what have you, but all connected as one performance from beginning to end which is probably the biggest reason why people, both figure skating fans and non-figure skating fans, are in awe when they see him skate. It really is a PERFORMING ART ! To hear the same thing coming from a professional ballet choreographer/director as yourself, only validates what his true talent is.
I hope more people realize this as opposed to just the unbelievable skating talent he has, and I believe your video will do that.
Lastly, regarding your last comments about Yuzuru as a person, all the non-figure skating people that come across talking to him, ie; reporters, security staff, ice rink staff, cameraman, airport staff and cabin attendants, all say he acts no different from just an ordinary person an never acts like a prized athlete. I am not a follower, per se, of Yuzuru Hanyu, but he genuinely seems to be a real nice young man.

I wanted to say of the Biellmann spin, acknowledging the flexibility needed to perform it, I rarely find it aesthetically pleasing to watch--except when Yuzu does it. Again, his innate understanding of the lines of his own body come into play again, and he transforms this spin into something really beautiful.

We enjoyed Christina's love of Yuzu. It was so interesting to hear you talk about the work that was created, even tribute to Yuzu relationship with he fans. It's wonderful. I am grateful for the connection that Yuzu makes. I was almost in tears. Digging into it from so many different angles, I found new surprises and discoveries that I didn't even know existed. It's great fun.
Tickets to a Yuzu competition are hard to come by. Eventually, you'll be able to watch most of it on TV (aside from the pay channels), very close up I'm thinking that I'll be able to see the expressions on the athletes' faces and the details of their outfits at the end of the day, so I'm trying to change my mind. But knowing the compassion that Yuzu had for the people who came to see him, I knew that I should go visit him once in a while. I also wanted to keep the desire to carry it in mind. I want to make the venue more exciting with all the people who visit, and I want to be a part of it. To have a lot of people at the venue cheering... if that's what it takes to support a skater's heart. I still want to help. As a high school student, figure skating tickets are expensive for me.
Japan's famous artistic directors are offering high school students tickets to quality, popular performances at low prices. When he himself was in high school, he saw a play directed by Peter Brook, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" which was a major motivator for him to pursue a career in theater. Based on this experience, he decided to offer a discount for high school students in 2010, with the aim of "providing a place where people can experience quality art at an impressionable age." I hope the Japanese figure skating community can learn from this. I used a translation site to write it because I'm not very good at English. Let's get this week started again, but I hope you have a great day.

Thank you. I went to ballet class when I was young. My sister was a ballet teacher before retired. I've also enjoyed figure skating since 1988 but only paid attention to pair and female skaters. I know skating and ballet require different technique. But we can always recognize when someone who never had a chance to a dance class has the feel, the passion of dancing. I just watched Notte Stellata a few hours ago and thought this is ballet on ice. And your vid popped up!

Thank you, Christina. About Yuzuru one can talk from the Traditional Japanese Theatre point of view (Mansai Nomura), martial arts, Eurythmy (esoteric art of movement), you name it. You do it from yours, and you do it really well. Thank you again.
Little detail: on the ice with Spread Eagle or Ina Bauer the feet HAVE TO BE perfect 180 for not falling, on the floor you can do whatsoever to be comfortable!

First thank you so much for this! I did ballet for many years and finding this video. I knew it I am not imagining things. He is a natural. Ever since I saw his 2012 Romeo & Juliet. I hope someday I can see your work. God bless you and I send you the warmest of hugs from always sunny Dominican Republic.

Thank you. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I have no words to describe how I feel watching your video. I think both dances you choreographed are amazing and inspiring. I feel touched watching the side by side (?) with yuzu’s skating and the ballet. I’m so happy seeing that his gorgeous skatings have inspired you and results in such great things. Thank you again. Indeed, spring will come. Spring will always come and there’s hope. Stay safe and I hope to see your dancers perform one day!

I've seen on YT both NS and HYK your ballet dancers did and I was really fascinated ~ they did such a good job in bringing along Yuzu's feels and steps ❤️ always thank you for making all this effort for Yuzu ❤️

When I first started watching Yuzuru, I thought that all he was about was the jumps. As I continued to watch him, I noticed his beautiful arm movements and body positions. I worry that all the jumping he does as it has caused him some injuries. But over time, his skating has gotten better. I am also a big fan of Jason Brown for the exact reasons that you stated. Thank you for a very insightful presentation.

Your first impression of him was that he was all about the jumps? Don't make me laugh, that was literally the definition of Nathan Chen a few years ago, but he's improved a lot since then.

Christina Valdez, what a stunning, sensitive and beautiful tribute to Yuzuru and to your dancers - and to us, his fans. I have watched this and cried and although this video is a couple of years old, I hope you have been able to fulfil your dreams and perform it again. I live in Australia, and there is no real knowledge of Yuzuru here so I am always looking for connection to him and his fans. I agree - they are so supportive and I am so glad you had positive feedback, as you should. I hope this is a work that can be performed for years into the future. Yuzuru has enriched my life. Every day. Thank you for this tribute. Gorgeous, beautiful and from the heart.

Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. I was inspired by Yuzuru after seeing him skate at the 2018 Olympics. He was graceful and balletic. I choreographed Notte Stellata thinking that no one but my small community in Kansas City would see it. I was stunned by the support we received via TH-cam. Yuzuru is an amazing skater and he deserves all the adoration from his fans. To answer your question, yes after the pandemic we were able to perform Notte Stellata live again. In fact I have a 4th generation of dancers that just performed it in April. I always sit them down and share my "Yuzu story" when I begin to teach the dance. ❤

Going through a Yuzuru TH-cam marathon recently and found your video!
    Thanks I love it.
I describe Yuzuru's Performance as " cleaning my soul", you used a similar phasing at the beginning, definitely feel connected!
Thanks for Haru yo Koi it is my favorite Yuzuru gala and your choreo is really moving too.
I don't know anything about ballet so I enjoyed the lecture at the beginning.
When I saw Yuzuru the first time I was fascinated by his beautiful body lines, you can't take your eyes off, and as you said I enjoy his practice sessions the most, especially Otonal step sequence, is out off this world!
Good luck to you and your dancers!

Seeing the superimposed videos really helped me see the phrasing you spoke of in both performances. And your explanation in regards to your choreography made me feel very warm and happy to know you're part of the fandom! It's beautiful, thoughtful and creatively conveyed :) Seriously I have a newfound appreciation for choreography now.
Plus I just have to say seeing your proud smiles while watching your dancers perform brought tears to my eyes - it's amazing to see them all come together and make that vision come true. Esp in Haru Yo Koi.. I don't know much about ballet but I just have to say the choreography looks dynamic, and the positions and movements of the dancers are very aesthetically pleasing. Love love love how the dresses look as the girls move

Actually, if Yuzuru was not obsessed with the 4A jump, he would have won every single competition in the last 6 years:) But he is the epitome of a first class athlete and he was not going to stop in his quest of mastering an impossible technical jump. Now that Yuzuru turned professional there is no stopping him.

    • @yingyingyo1207
      @yingyingyo1207 ปีที่แล้ว +3

No I don't think Yuzuru could have won anymore major competitions after PyeongChang Olympics. It's not that because he's obsessed with 4A or he's lacking in skills. Simply with GOE +-5 and judges not respecting the rulebook, Yuzuru just could not win anymore. They won't let him.

I agree on everything you said on such a deep level 🩷 i wish you were my choreographer lol, I’m a figure skater and former ballet dancer. I mastered the hydroblade because of him, and just like you said, watch his performances if im feeling down. It just lights up My soul. Especially notte stellata. Theres another recording of the performance in called “rostelecon cup 2017” where he skates notte stellata but with even more passion! (I thought it was impossible) if I ever achieve just a fraction of Yuzuru grace, I would be forever happy loll. It’s so clear that you have a deep understanding and sense for musicality and phrasing because the ballet choreography felt original while still fitting with the music in a similar way to Yuzuru. It’s just amazing. I wish I could dance with you, and your dancers and perform yuzu-inspired shows. This video made me so happy, and I’m so glad you made it^^
