Hello everyone and welcome back to another sit-down, advice video! This one has been very.very highly requested lately & I hope it does help to break down what a good dissertation should be composed of. This is based upon my experience and research into social sciences dissertations so please be aware that certain subjects might not fit this structure at all. That being said, most of the factors discussed are applicable to any dissertation or research project.

I wrote a very mediocre dissertation years ago, but I'm now back at uni for a completely different degree, and I'll have to write a new dissertation in a few years. This is excellent, short and punchy. I will show it to my students in lecture. I am also trying to show them real examples, there does not seem to be many examples on youtube of real quality, therefore I have set this channel up for my students to see real proposal and dissertation examples, as there is real vale in this, we can only learn and understand sometimes when we can see the end product. I am happy for anyone to come and watch these examples, not just my students at the university of York, as I think all students can gain a lot and improve their marks from seeing them

I loved how simple this video was! I think it was very helpful that you emphasized that you focused alot on the criteria that was required. I think when we have these in mind, we can make a conscious effort to meet those standards for each part of the dissertation. :)

What suggestions would you give to someone needing statistics for a research that they have to do, but not having learnt anything about them during the undergraduate years? Are these general rules for what to include in a dissertation regardless of the subject? For example, I am currently studying Marketing.
Here in the U.S.A, a master's level thesis is what you are calling a dissertation. Dissertations are what we call the papers that are done to complete a PhD. Generally good advice to follow the grading rubric (which you call mark schemes) no matter what assignment you are doing, and no matter what level of degree you are pursuing.

Great advice and video, Rosie! Question: If you had 4 weeks to write a paper how many days would you spend on different areas (researching/reading, outline, drafting, writing, and editing? For example 5 days researching and reading. Thanks!
Thank you! I've never actually had 4 weeks to write a paper because our essays are due twice a week. I did write my dissertation in 8 weeks (not including initial research or calculations) along side one essay a week so it was essentially 4 weeks worth of time. I would say research takes the longest amount of time but some can be done during writing. Don't write until you have thoroughly planned structure because it will not be your best work. I didn't actually ever write a full draft because I sent draft chapters and edited as I went along but i would give yourself a whole week for checking and editing. 1 week research, 1 week writing and researching, 1 week properly writing and a week tweaking and finalising.

I haven't actually shared it anywhere yet haha (I think I'll always be worried I don't actually know what I'm talking about). I made a video discussing the topic if that helps? If it's stucture you're after I'd look at any PhD ones that are available online bc by that point the structure is most likely sussed and you can just tone it down content wise. Sorry that's probably unhelpful

Your university should have a general marking standards document available from the examinations office. Departments usually make their marking schemes available if they issue undergraduate handbooks (so you can get specific with subjects)

How much time for research and methods(practical work)? & how much time for writing(paper word)? And total time of completion? Can you answer this😅 cuz i’m started mine from this month, and i’ve time limit of 4 months.
I got my topic in November and handed in in March. I had been research a vaguely related topic over the summer a bit too but I changed my research focus way too late and most of it was void. You have time don't worry!
I also had 1-2 essays per week all the way alongside that so half that time might even be enough

I'm confused... a dissertation is for a PhD only. Did you get graded? I came here bc I am struggling to write a PhD dissertation. An undergrad paper that is graded is... not a dissertation. A dissertation is accepted and you become a doctor. ???
Nope, in the UK you have to submit a dissertation to get your Bachelors. Mine was 15,000 words. It is graded and mine made up 20% of my grade. The masters I'm currently on also has a 20,000 word dissertation.

My intro was technically also my lit review haha. We had to write within 10% of 15,000 words so I didn't have a choice ;)

In france the thesis is in 2 parts 1st part in in 1st year of master degree 30-40pages about your "advancement in the research" ( idk the name in english research paper/report - dissertation??? 🤣) and next year the real thesis 80-120 pages
