    Been rockin this tuning and chords for a while. The best thing about open D is that if you accidentally drop your guitar down the stairs it sounds good all the way down.

      For slide it adds an extra fret above the fifth to work with and break the monotony . It's twin Open E which is used a lot is to me too hard on the neck and strings. . Open D does seem to be the most versatile of the major chord open tunings . I use open G also and like it but D gives me more original variations on playing and songwriting.

      @@dagnabbit6187 The great thing about Open D is that simply putting the capo on the 2nd fret gives you Open E, without the extra neck tension. Similarly, 2nd fret capo in Open G gives you Open A.

    I tuned my Alvarez dreadnought for the first time to open D two days ago, and am completely in love. I feel like it's a gift for my songwriting process and voice. The notes create such beautiful harmony and it's so easy to go any direction with subtle chord changes and have it still sound good. Thanks for making this video.

    Wow, super helpful. Nice simple and general "chords" that can lead to experimentation by us. Most people here on YT try to get too "exact" and don't leave any room for personal choices. Thank you, very well done.

    My preferred way to do as example Gm is to bar the 1st and 2nd with 3rd finger, 1st finger on 3rd string, then here’s the fun part I picked up from “Somewhere over the rainbow” Tommy’s version. Bar the 4th to 6th string with my 2nd finger.now playing all 6 strings and still have pinky finger free

    Barry Gibb (Bee Gees) writes and plays in open D. Most Bee Gee songs were written that way. He does that minor chord thing but he doesn't use his thumb. I use my thumb.

    • @mwj5368
      @mwj5368 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi CraigTube! There are three of the BeeGees, two with acoustic guitars and you can see what chords they are playing. It's really neat how they make such a beautiful symphony with their voices and 2 guitars with the song "Massachusetts" just like you were sitting around a campfire with them. th-cam.com/video/qar-NJ5rjW0/w-d-xo.html It looks like Maurice is playing in regular tuning and Barry in some other kind of tuning, maybe open D as I'm hoping to play this song in open D. What do you think? Is Barry playing in open D in that song? Thanks! I liked it when Andy, just before he died, toured Europe and donated millions to Amnesty International, at least that's the way I remember it.

    VERY useful video! You're a man of taste, with that little Stella (isn't it a Stella?) in the background...
    In open D (or open E if it suits your voice better) it's very easy to build a complete scale, for most country, blues, rock and pop pieces --->
    from string 6 (the big one) to string 1
    IM : 0 0 0 0 0 0 (D major)
    IIm (0) 2 2 1 2 2 (e minor)
    IIIm (0) 4 4 3 4 4 (f# minor)
    IVM 5 5 5 5 5 5 (G major)
    VM 7 7 7 7 7 7 (A major)
    VIm (9)9 9 8 9 9 (b minor)
    VIIm dim (11) 10 11 10 10 11 (c#m dim)
    Sus 2, sus4, 7th, 7thM chords are so easy to understand and play in open D, that I still wonder today why that way of tuning a guitar is not more teached...
    Even more interesting is the fact that we can find at least 3 different and easy fingerings for each chords, along the neck between nut and 12th position! It's very convenient for a solo artist, minimizing you finger moves and letting you concentrate on you singing...
    You can mix major and minor chords, slide and finger playing... It works well on electric, reso or acoustic guitar : Open D (or E) is the real swiss army knife for all

      When fretting the 2.3.6 chords, I usually leave the two thinnest strings open, it sounds kinda loose though.

    • @SergeCeyral
      @SergeCeyral 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the IIm, IVm and VIm chords it's very convenient to choose between the two possible triads :
      for exemple IIm chord (from string 6 to string 1): X221XX or XXX122
      IVm chord (from string 6 to string 1): X443XX or XXX344
      those inversions bring interesting variations in the voicings (with an old fashioned western swing smell)...

    great video.thanks. i wanted to ask if you have ever played in (low to high) F#-B-C#-F#-A#-C# -- it seems like a mixture of Drop D only tuned down half-step - but ,tuning the top two strings up make for some interesting opportunities for hammering and the like..

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jay wire That's like an open G4 tuning or in this case an open F#. Up a half step that would be GCDGBD. Might be a real cool tuning.

    Tom your tutorial has helped me a lot with a song i'm trying to learn. Mary MacCaslin Dust Devels. I've tuned to open d and have benn trying to figure out the chords she is playing by listening to her but its hard to hear over her voice. Could you send me a video of the chord progression?

      I don't do song lesson videos because of copyright issues. Unless I wrote or co-wrote it. But on a cursory listen to Dust, it seems to be in standard tuning. Key of E. Chords E, A, C#m and B.

I found sites that have open D chords....but these have way more depth to them ..i just wish i knew what i was playing when using your chords

    Tom ......Just a question you are basically playing your acoustic open D using chord shapes and fingering . At the end of the video you were looking for a slide !...do you use a slide straight on this guitar or have you adjusted it . What I am after is to use both chord work/slide on same guitar with little or no adjustment to it. Also what is your string gauge.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can do slide and play chords on the same guitar. Generally would use a glass slide if the action is lower as it's easier to have a light touch with glass tan with steel. I do have some instruments that are set up a little higher that I can use metal slides with as well.

    That chord you play with the E7 fingering is not "technically a D with a sus2 4 and 6". It's a G2 chord. The notes are DBDGAD. D, B, and G make up the G chord. The added A makes it a G2

    I saw it on youtube and it looked interesting to say the least. I guess you need to have it installed with new tuners as well to make it work. Or maybee it only comes witht he les paul. IDK. But it's strange to watch it do it;s thing. I wonder if it changes during the playing of a song? Maybee Adrian Legg would love it. Speaking of MGD I went and purchased an used classical guitar in excellent condition this morning. Oh no! I think it's staring at me! lol.

      Michael Kentner Shouldn't be. Just tuning them down a whole step each. I use 12's and 16's on the top two strings. Elixir "Light" strings. Extra light strings, 10 on top, might be pretty loose but not that bad.

  • @brianscottmatthews4437
    @brianscottmatthews4437 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you dropped your chord shapes down one string (toward the high E) wouldnt you have the same shapes used in an open "G" tuning.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From open D to open G. 000000 = D to 000100 = Dsus, then in open G x00000 = G to x00010 = Gsus. You may be on to something there.

  • @JoshYenne

They do a number of versions. The one I am referring to is the Planet Rock version here on you tube. If so I could send you my email address and you could mail them to me.

    • @TomStrahle

      +Tom Strahle Cheers Tom. I'd already figured that much out buddy, there is however one other chord used and that's the one that gives me a problem. It's difficult to see his fingering and whatever I try doesn't seem to sound right.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +stephen leicester OK, so I think you are referring to the pre-breakdown where it goes - Em, C, Em, C try these voicings - for C x20120 and for Em x20020 The "C" chord is really C/E but the bass player can get the C root. Otherwise you could play 555555 for C which is really at the 10th fret. Hope this helps.

    • @TomStrahle

      Those aren't strumming patterns they are chord fingerings. For example 000000 would be all six strings open. 022100 would be open 6th string, 2nd fret 5th string, 2nd fret 4th string, 1st fret 3rd string, open 2nd string and open 1st string.
