    I think the new 7-Series fits better in a dystopian cyberpunk action film than real life but to be fair, we're probably going to end up living in a dystopian cyberpunk action film within the next one or two decades so I can't blame them for cutting out the middle man going straight for the 2077 neomilitaristic aesthetic

    As a BMW technician who did the PDI for an ICE version of this car, I can attest to the automatic doors being highly unpredictable. I messed with them for 5 minutes and couldn't figure it out. The inside buttons work fine, but I never even got the outside buttons to open the door all the way. Wasn't able to read the manual, though. That's in a sealed bag for the customer to open, but I wouldn't be surprised if it just said, "see dealer."

    I was a big-time critic of this vehicle a few months ago, but then I went to buy a new S class and the dealership happened to have a new 760i in stock. I compared the two and fell in love with the 760i. It made the S class feel like a little old ladies' car. The exterior looks mean and sporty which I just love. The interior though is so plush, well thought out and superbly designed. I bought the 760i. My only real complaints are:
    1. The dropdown TV. Though I love it, I hate not seeing out of the review while it's down. I feel like when the TV is being used, the rear camera needs to come on so that the driver can easily see what's going on behind him/her.
    2. The air vents. Though I like the clean lines on the dash, I miss not feeling the intense blowing of the air vents. Living in South Texas, it gets quite hot during the summer. Sometimes you really want to feel the air blowing on you and hard. It does still cool the car but personally, I would prefer bigger air vents.
    All in all, this is the best car I've ever owned.

    I remember the review of the EQS and the rear seat comfort was an issue. Looks like the i7 is more comfortable in the back. As for your comment about the power train, all EVs are next level smoothness and eliminates the advantages of "luxury" from the equation now. It all rests on suspension and handling now.

    • @andoletube
      @andoletube 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      NVH is still relevant - now it is even more important because the drivetrain is so quiet, you notice everything else. It costs serious money to engineer that out of a car, so that will naturally separate the luxury class from the lower classes.

    Your discussion on perception of EV drivetrains and luxury cars, with traditional association of ICE engines was very insightful. With such a drastic change in powertrains, we have to reexamine our preconceived notions and pay attention to previous biases. Additionally, I fully agree with your definition of luxury, but I also understand others may define luxury as access to a lot of technology above all. Others want the smell of rich mahogany and bourbon. But for me, it's ease of use with quite and comfort. Literally relaxes me when I get in. Thanks for the nuanced and insightful review

As far as I'm concerned, the only piece of tech that properly serves a purpose is that driver display (uglier than the last generation but more practical and more customization) and that rear television, everything else is just a gimmick and possibly dangerous (auto doors, touch climate controls). It gives me the impression that people who do car interiors these days have never actually driven a car before, so they throw all kinds of tech in hopes that something would suit the customer's needs.

    If you have $150,000 to spend on a car. You have $500-$2,000 to put a L2 EVSE somewhere on your estate. The lack of proper DCFC in your town is definitely a bummer, but that's a location specific issue which should be noted as an infrastructure problem that will improve as some of the 100s-of-thousands of your fellow city dwellers get EVs. FWIW, charging at home is how you get to "wow, this is way better than ICE" so it's easy to understand why it doesn't appeal, when you don't have L2 charging at home. Seems like a justified business expense to drop the $$ to have one installed.

Lexus on the other hand doesn't go overboard with tech, but their sales with more premium models have been abysmal compared to other rivals like BMW and Mercedes, the bulk of Lexus sales come from their compact entry level vehicles where customers can pass up on some of the features.
