    Look at the wheels of cars, they indicate if the car is moving and which direction. Side road for example, car may look stopped but if you see the wheels turning that means the car is moving and may be pulling out in front of you. Also pay attention to where in the lane people are, if they are hugging the right side of their lane that means they are probably wanting to change lanes to the right. People rarely use blinkers, but they instinctively move to the side of the lane they are planning to change to. Last one, if you're on the freeway in the far left lane and you see a car up ahead actively changing lanes to the faster lanes, there is a chance he is going to come all the way over, so keep him on your radar and give him space and be as visible as possible. I lied, one more...OCCUPY YOUR LANE, meaning be visible but also position yourself so others won't be tempted to merge into your lane, this may technically put yourself closer to the other cars depending on the situation but you need to be 100% attentive anyway.

    Good tips; here are a couple I'd like to add (I've been riding over 40 years). ALWAYS cover the levers; this may seem unnecessary, but it can save you. After dropping my bike in a quick-stop situation, I reviewed the scene to figure out what went wrong. I determined that, since I had been riding with my fingers around the throttle, the quick grab I made for the brake lever also pulled the front end slightly to the right, so when I clamped on the brake. the bike went down instantly. Fast forward a few years; riding around a traffic circle, a utility truck in a lane clearly marked "Must Turn Right" didn't turn, putting him directly in my path as I was making the left-right transition and opening the throttle to exit the circle. Since I already had my fingers in position on the levers, I was able to brake SMOOTHLY, and missed a collision by about two feet. Check where other drivers are looking, both in traffic and when stopping; if they're glancing down a lot, get the hell away from them since their phone is more important to them than safety is (and at a light, you can use your mirrors to check the drivers coming up from behind). At one point you said something about being in the center lane, so it didn't matter as much about cars entering from the right; don't assume anything. I've had to dodge when a car started to pull out in front of a pickup truck 100 feet in front of me; I saw it coming, the truck braked hard enough to smoke his tires, and his left rear bumper ended up in the center lane in front of me. Then there are the oblivious morons who pull out to go LEFT, crossing all the traffic lanes to do so, with or without signaling. Lastly, when changing lanes, turn your head and look to make sure it's clear!

    I always come to a stop at the sides of my lane like you do but I didn't do that from the start. The msf course taught us to stop in the center lane so the car infront of you can see you through their rear view mirror. I don't agree with that as I now stop on the sides of cars.

    • @ThisLifeRiding
      @ThisLifeRiding  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, seen to many rear enders to stop in the center of the lane.

    Where legal and when you are able to safely do so you should filter in stopped traffic. It really helps prevent being rear ended

    • @ThisLifeRiding
      @ThisLifeRiding  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No joke. Wish we could lane split.

    • @iamsobanned
      @iamsobanned 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check with the AMA and other motorcycle groups to see if they are trying to fight for lane splitting in your state. There are a few other states where I heard they are trying to pass laws to make it legal. Not quite as well as California but it is something.

      I can't be sure but I don't think so. The rear tail lights don't have aggressive enough styling. Having said that, we have a lot of fast cars here and I know nothing about 4 wheeled vehicles so it very well could be.

    Ride like you're invisible. Expect every single car to cut you off or merge into you at all times. Expect someone to run every red light. Remind yourself every time you get on your bike that you could die today.
    Complacency kills.

    Every other vehicle is trying to kill me, consciously or not. Always keep that in your mind. Create as much space as possible around you. Cover brakes going through intersections and look left and right as you go through. Anticipate that drivers are going to do something totally unexpected. Never assume drivers can see you. I use high beams during the day. Don't take corners too fast. If you want to speed, pick your spots...empty road. Slow down on roads you're not familiar with.

  • @BmxDieseldude
    @BmxDieseldude 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    in multi lane roads / highways I watch drivers mirrors. if I can't see their face then they can't see me. also helpful for spotting distracted drivers even if they are managing to maintain their speed/lane position at the time.

    but a tip i can give is on target fixation. the tip is follow the rule from guns. look past the target to make sure it's clear and always look around to make sure you don't have something come into your area your pointing.

    Ah, haven't been able to ride for 2 weeks. Gonna feel soooooooo good to get back on the road this Friday. I noticed you have a nice new jacket! Nice
    Also on your second tip, I'm sure here if you stopped to the side of the lane, most people here would just take up that space and try to get in front of you lol.

    • @ThisLifeRiding
      @ThisLifeRiding  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That has happened to me before. Only once though.

  • @chriscarrillo8995

    most people don't look for bikes. i seen a accident a long time ago where a guy on a bicycle was riding down the wrong side of the street and right smack into the front end of a pick up truck doing around 25mph. that was the cyclists fault for being on the wrong side of the street. I seen cyclists run red lights and stop signs and blame cars for accidents. I had one try to intentionally try to run into me. I even had one a few years ago that hit me. so what i learned from riding bicycles I use on the road. i try not to speed because i would be doing highway speeds to stay ahead of traffic. I seen people here in a 35 mph even a 25 mph do 50 mph down the road. i usually stay by the drives side of the cars in front of me so this way if i see someone who isn't going to stop i can either lane split or turn left to get out of the way. there is a old film i found on youtube it's from Peter fonda and evil kanevil which gives you tips on riding motorcycles which i follow.

  • @bryanbond3886

    i agree with you. most motorcycle accidents are from excessive speed. way over the posted limit.

    • @ThisLifeRiding
      @ThisLifeRiding  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is a short snippet from the Hurt Report. The failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is the predominating cause of motorcycle accidents. The driver of the other vehicle involved in collision with the motorcycle did not see the motorcycle before the collision, or did not see the motorcycle until too late to avoid the collision.

    Really nice Topic. :)
    one thing which i do is i slow down at every signal even if it's green,by doing that we are gonna get a littlebit more time to react if the signal turns redat the last moment. i think this reduces the chance of panic breaking and wheel locking up.

    Always check your mirrors to see if there is a car behind you

  • @Tyler3209
    @Tyler3209 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One more thing is to watch for people who are going to swerve or switch lanes. If you know to watch for it you will always see it. They drift to the side, hesitate, drift back to middle, and then they whip directly sideways into the other lane as fast as their car will physically go. This might be an Orlando thing but I see it happen at least twice near me every ride.
