Dave I took your advice a few months ago and bought some of the spiral taps from Amazon. I will never use any other kind of tap now as long as i can keep from it. I love these taps. FYI I always buy with confidence when you recomend something and have not been disapointed yet. Thanks for taking time for all of us.

You are so well organized Dave (GREAT too see) just received that tool and cutter grinder from Shars, we think it is the most diverse and we are happy to see you like it so we know we bought good then:) so we bought it nd it is much heavier then it looks, nice sharing, Lance & Patrick

Thanks, you too! And my wife had to help me get it up on the bench...

Great video Dave. Very comprehensive. Your still going to get asked the same questions.

    Hello Dave,
A very interesting video... one of my goals is to have as few tools as possible and the one's I have be interchangeable between my machine tools. My theory is that with fewer tools, the one I have can be better quality...
    Take care.

I am surprised you don't use your Gauge blocks, I use my pratt and Whitney set a lot in conjunction with my Sine bar but I guess it depends on the type of work you do. I use my large version Black book quite a bit at my desk but mainly use my "Zuess" book more at the machine.

Hi Malcolm, rarely do i need to bring out the sine bar but did use it with my square gage block set to make the angle blocks I showed...

Great topic Dave, it would be interesting to see viewpoints from other machinist and hobbyist since we do different types of work and projects. Oops this might start a trend.
You got me thinking I sure have quite a few nice tools that never come out of the drawer, waiting for that special project.
I’m putting that little depth gauge on my shopping list..looks real handy. Enjoyed….👍

      Hi Dean,
That depth gauge looks exactly like the same thing detailed on page 33 of the Guy Lautard first Machinist bedside Reader book. Very simple to make your own. It's base length is 1.250" long, the block is 7/8ths high and the middle radius cut out has a .300" radius. Guy made his mostly on a lathe and with a 4 jaw independent chuck. .125" hardened drill rod was used for the gauging rod. If I was making one I think I'd choose 4140 PH for the gauge body just for the better wear resistance.

I don't know Dave you must be like the engineers I worked with in the machine shop. They could start the train but had no idea how to stop it. First Dykem is a layout fluid not for matching ways for that you use High Spot Blue. This stuff can take a dot about 1/8" dia. and cover a square foot. Second if you don't want the gauge blocks send them to me I would get good use out of them. But thats the difference between an engineer and a machinist I guess. There has been times when I took a reengineered fixtured that was over 100lbs and set on an engineers desk because he thought he was smarter then the machinist that used the fixture at least 12 out of 28 to 31 days a month. I do like your channel but these 2 items are a mainstay in a shop just like micrometers and calipers. Just saying 36+ years machinist running manual and CNC mills and lathes and grinders.

Yes I know dyken is a layout fluid as I said in the video and it is much cheaper than dykem's high spot blue which is why I used it instead. And yes I am an engineer and not a machinist so we live in different worlds...

@@TheMiniMachineShop Unfortunately when I had to retire on disability I had to sale all my tools including a 92 piece set of gauge blocks I bought off a man that had retired from a government inspector job he only used 3 blocks for his job and they where the only ones missing the rest where still wrapped in the waxed paper from the factory. That and my coaxial indicator are the only things I really regret giving up. Because now I'm working on getting a home hobby shop going. I just bought a Harbor Freight 7x12 lathe I'm working on setting up. I don't like the mounts too narrow and not ridged enough. I watch a lot of the mini machines video I have subscribed to yours I like your setup. But sorry I am controversial about some things. I use gauge blocks to check my micrometers because I don't trust the standards that come with them so I double check them. Even when I worked in the shop and had an inspection department that calibrated all micrometers I would double check them to my feel. My micrometers my feel.

You would be showing new people or someone wants to try and like to see the results. Hey, and run DRO system, gosh I'm just waiting until I get my DRO. System. Hey we'll talk sometime.
