While I would never say no to HOF-caliber coaches in waiting like Hurley, Donovan, and Drew. I never loved the thought of a coach who's been goated at another school by winning an NCAAT being the face of UKBB. Felt that way in 2007 & 09 when Donovan & Izzo were courted and felt like that this week. I guess Im weird like that?
I think he is solid. But it's more of a legacy/nostalgia kinda thing that most of us Old timer fans are wanting. Pope leading... Reed MAYBE coming back with Jeff in the stands and possibly of Mash... WOW
@@charlieray4289 I get it! I was 20yrs old in 1996 and shed a few tears yesterday watching that Pitino message vid, hearing all his ex teammates rallying around the hire. Im super pumped! If we suck, at least we know the guy at the helm gives a damn, and have no doubt there's not another coach that was considered or was one the top of fan's wish lists that will put more effort and passion into making this thing work!
If Pope can bring in his 3 or 4 best guys from BYU, Reed and BigZ who fit Pope offensive to a insanely scary level and kept 3-4 of the other UK players with remaining eligiblity/incoming recruits and you have yourself conservatively a T10 team!
Pope was the 12th best coach in the league. last season was disappointing. It was a second straight 5th place finish in the WCC, with the Cougars finishing below .500 in conference play, finishing just 17-14 on the year.
Reed sheppard isnt just a good fit for Popes offense, hes already madly loved in our state and one of the highest Nil players from what ive seen. He comes back for his sophomore year under Coach Pope and hes instantly a super hero in Lexington, the money he would make year two would be insane.
I think Mark will do very well in UK. I can't wait to see if reed Shepard stays since we have all the NIL money now too

Duke hired Shire, UNC hired Smith. Neither had ANY head coaching experience. Pope has 9 years. It’s worked out pretty good for them so far.
