    Not only size but I’ve decided no more ASPH lenses for me. The perfect daily carry lens is between the size of a v4 35mm Summicron and the 50 Summicron v5.
    All lenses I love are non-ASPH lenses. They’re compact and they give you a beautiful image.
    Now lenses have to be super corrected and big. They just keep getting bigger and bigger. See the new 50 Summilux. It even looks ugly.
    Asphericalized and super APOchromatized to see every single pore from wide open to f22 to give you the most perfect image ever in history.
    It’s absolute insanity. I lasted a couple of months with the APO-Lanthar 50 and sold it. It’s like listening to a one-note song.
    Somehow TH-cam got into people’s heads and now everyone thinks “well if I have a 60MP camera I HAVE to have the most super perfect lenses because the other lenses won’t “resolve my sensor” and I’m missing out. Who puts these stupid ideas into peoples heads? I have an M-11 so I have to now go out and buy all these new lenses too! I have to resolve my sensor. 😅 Craziness.
    Leica M’s were always designed to be small portable things. And they were never supposed to be in a spec race. Ah well.
    As for the M11, I personally don’t like it. I like my M10R Black Paint. Brass. Beautiful. I don’t care for the new features. The battery I just put one in my pocket. The M10R is my last camera body. I don’t really care about cameras anymore. It does everything I need it to do.
    The only one upgrade that I would’ve cared to see was the mechanical shutter to have 1/8000. I think that’s a better upgrade than an ES.
    When I go out is my M10R BP with the v5 50 Cron and that’s it. Nothing on my camera. I use a pouch when I keep it in the car. Not even a bag. If I bring a bag to travel I use a wrist strap.
    I also put an extra battery and a lens cloth in my pocket and off I go.
    Also the 40MP color sensor in the M10R is a pretty special sensor only found on that particular camera. It’s beautiful and I think 40MP is the perfect compromise for image size, file size and cropability. I don’t know when I will need a 60MP file. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I’m aware of the new off sensor meter. I don’t care for that either. I understand about this 60MP Sony sensor may be more color accurate. Again. Don’t care. It’s the same about the lenses. They all have their unique quirks and it’s about trying it slowly and see which quirks align with yours. Not about what is the most perfect. Because we aren’t perfect and the camera and images you make should be a reflection of your own imperfections.

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I was about to purchase a v3 but I read it suffers from focus shift and that will bother me because i shoot at f4-f8 most of the time.
      I’m afraid when it comes to 35 I’ll be back at the same thing with the 28mm. Just get the Voigtlander version. 😀 without using even the brand new 35ASPH version I get the 35f2 Ultron is just as good for thousands less.

    Minimalist here, from my 1932 Barnack through M3, M6 and M10R. When I bought the M10R two years ago I bought the EVF with it, I used it four or five times then it went back in the box.

    You know, The experience for me hasn't been so good with my M11. I've had to send it back twice for repairs of the same problem.
    The screen went dead on it. After getting it back from the first time I sent it in, 5 minutes latter it went dead again.
    It's now 2 months with out my camera.
    I've only owned it for 5 months. I'm hoping to get it back without any issues.
    I love the shooting style of a rangefinder camera. Back in the late 90's I had a M6 and loved it! And I regret ever selling it.
    Great video as always!

    😈😈😈If thou succumbest to the temptations of obscenely rich Americans' private jets and Porsches, verily shalt thou also succumb to their favorite piece of photo jewelry. Yes, the people who use their Ms mostly with an EVF would be better off photographically using an SL-series camera (or even, gasp, a different brand) but for them being seen with the M is all about looks, innit?... a Q3 isn't a bad stand-in, but an SL is just too big and blobby to be truly stylish.
    Having said that, I would agree that for the person who has genuine application for a digital rangefinder camera, the M11 is the one that makes the most sense to buy. (I love my Pixii A2572 but the range/viewfinder and lens-mounting flexibility just aren't in the same league.) Still, your observations re electronic-shutter distortion are a bit off-putting. I have a lot of experience with electronic shutters, on the Pixii (which has no mechanical shutter at all) and on various Fujifilm cameras, and normally the only time you'd expect to see that much distortion is with fast panning or fast-moving subjects... it's VERY puzzling in photos like your examples, which seem to show subjects that are almost completely stationary. To me it looks like a readout-timing issue and would merit sending the camera back with a terse "WTF?" note.

      Thanks! Don't worry i'm staying with my M240 for now. We think so alike regarding the "photo jewelry aspect, say for celebs etc. I've already scripted the next 2 videos and you'll see me cover this :) Electronic shutter - the lifeguard might be weird geometry - POV and the camera on leg shot was them moving and me moving so that likely is ES. The car we the lens distortion.. but yes more "odd photos" than I'm used to seeing.

    Thank you for your always informativ and entertaining videos. I must although correct you opinion if one uses 75% of the time an EVF the SL would be a better choice.
    I'm using at least 75% of the time an EVF but use it more as a waist level tool like the Hasselblad 500 Series. I find the lower Perspektive for my style of photography better. The adjustable EVF is much more flexible than the fixed viewfinder of the SL2......an the M11 is much smaller to carry around.

    Nice review. My journey into Leica started with a bargain SL which objectively is superb in every way and in my opinion is better built than the M11 and even not the original SL EVF is way better than the M11’s unit. However, I just had to have an M11 which is fabulous and special in a way that only an M can be. The EVF being tilt able is also very useful. I tend to use the camera without the EVF with a 50mm f1.2 Nokton most of the time. With the light black body it balances nicely and is still quite compact. The battery life is fantastic.

Looking to get either a 35mm Lens Light Lab 35mm f/2 or 28mm LTM Voitlander 28mm Color Skopar which is coming soon. Between the two which do you prefer for street. Maybe a new youtube topic comparing the options of these two focal lengths for Barnack Leicas. Keep your content flowing 😊

    Super! Glad you made it to Vegas for an up close and personal look at the American dream. San Diego is great, and better to my view.
    I have noticed some wonkiness with the electronic shutter on the X2D also. Not quite the same and much more pronounced at low shutter speeds. Solution for me is to just use the XCD 55V. Your review of the M11 as the first real improvement on the M9 got my attention. That says a lot. Sensor performance would be the key here. I like color so my needs are different than yours in that.

    Aside from the hype: As you said many times before, the lens makes the picture, not the camera body. I couldn't care less about the Sony 60Mp sensor, the battery lasting a 1000 images (when was the last time you shot 1000 images in one setting?!) and the charging cable like on my phone. Im also not happy about the many reviews stating the freezing issues and other recurrent software glitches. This camera isn't ready yet.

    I’ve gone through this thought process, too. I think summicrons color skopars and some of the slower Zeiss ZMs are perfect Leica lenses. At 50 and 35, I also have 1.4s in my toolkit (summilux ASPH and the Zeiss distagon, respectively). You can’t ignore that fast and APO Leica glass is very tempting. You have to ask if you want something smaller in absolute terms, or relative ones. A mirrorless or dslr 35/1.4 is going to be twice the size of the summilux asph or the Zeiss distagon. And there are very few lenses that compare with the 50 lux period.

    The M11 is a fine camera but with the all aluminium body not really apealing to me (keep in mind that only the top is made from brass on the silver Version). Also, the more Pixel a camera has, the more ridiculous the rangefinder becomes. And the evf on m don't work, at least for me. And at the end of the day, it's the photographer anyway

    Interesting analysis. Thanks for sharing. Perhaps if you have to travel, a good choice might be the Noctilux 1.2 50mm and the Leica M 11. It's a lighter set than the 0.95 and you have a bit more bokeh than the Summilux, and probably more than the good enough times.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, yes the 0.95 is not a travel lens. The owner just had it on the camera when I tested it. I would opt for a smaller wider lens but the 1.2 is a nice suggestion vs the Lux.

    I'm definitely a minimalist guy, but I'm also a 50mm shooter, and that's why I miss my M8... there's very few decent, compact 50mm lenses, whereas there are some great compact 35 f2.0's, which crop to approx. 50mm on the M8.
    With the M11, I wish the crop modes would change the rangefinder patch - then I could run in 1.3x crop and I think I'd be extremely happy!
    I'm still very happy with my M11, as it produces colours and files closest to my M8/M9 (I never got on with the colours from the M10). YMMV, naturally! I use my M11 with a Zeiss Planar 50, which is not ideally compact. I tried the latest Voigtlander 50 1.5 as a compact option, but the focus ring is far too stiff for my shooting style. The Summarit 2.4 is fine, but I found it mechanically very sloppy.
    If I needed to use the EVF all the time, I wouldn't have an M camera. For me, the beauty of a true rangefinder is in the unique and simple viewfinder experience, but people have any number of valid reasons to feel differently.

Acquired a 2002 M6 TTL to allow for color and flash shooting while the M6 was used for B/W T-Max 400 shots without having to wait 36 exposures. 6 months ago I « traded » my X1 for a M11 to which I added a Summicron 28mm Asph. For me part of the buzz around being a photographer has always been about the gear. I was using Hasselblads & a Leica M6 back in my film era up until 2001. Those Blads were the absolute pinnacle for me, I loved the entire process, from loading the backs to pressing the shutter. Practical & profit motivated considerations resulted in completely ditching all my film cameras, I was using the Canon DSLR system up until the 1DS MK2. It was less about the camera then and more about the pixels... image quality and making fine art prints on my large format Epson printer. I did own the M8 & M9 for a short period as well, but it came at a time where I was about to quit the industry.
    When I closed my studio in 2012, I turned my back on photography, selling everything. Photos were taken with my phone camera only. However, in a moment of reawakening about 2 months ago, I decided it was time to renew my passion for photography. So now, I have the M11P, 50mm Voigtlander Lanthar APO, Summicron 75 APO, and my favourite lens the Leica Summilux 28/1.4.
    Yea the M11P with the 28 Lux. Now that is a seriously nice combo. Back to how I felt in the Blad era.

    On the advice of a British photographer who jets around in a Canadair and zips around in a sweet ass Porsche I bought the SL. I couldn’t be happier. I enjoy that camera body so much. I mostly use non Leica lenses but with adaptors I get great shots. For walk around I’ve mostly used the Voigtlander Ultron 35mm. I carried that setup throughout Berlin and the shots were fantastic. However I do love street photography and that camera with lenses can be a bit noteable and slightly heavy. Your thoughts on the M11 with the small lenses sounds enticing. 60MP is way more than I need most of the time. I’m more than happy shooting at the 24MP with my SL. The option to shoot at 36MP on the M11 would be the sweet spot IMO. My question. Do you think the M10 with 24MP would be almost as good as the M11? I would be fine with the 1/4000th most of the time and I don’t shoot 1000 pics in a day. I’ve never run out of juice on the SL in a day. Great video. Hi, There is a time lag between pressing the shutter and the photo taken compared to M10r, M10, M9, and M8 ... similar to SL with an M lens on it. I am able with M10R to focus on moving subjects better than is capable SL 601 with autofocus lenses. For me, this is a primary downside. Funny that nobody is discussing this as a step back. Lecia should change this in the future. Who cares if the M11 camera metering is more accurate than on M10... Would like to hear your opinion. BR Lovrenc

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There has been some discussion on various Leica-centric forums and in a few reviews about this increased time lag. The consensus seems to be that it's caused by the M11's new metering system, which reads solely from the sensor; previous models used the sensor for metering only in live-view mode, reverting in rangefinder mode to metering off a light-colored area on the shutter curtain. The downside to sensor-only metering is that the shutter curtain has to stay open all the time so the camera can meter; when you press the release, the curtain has to close and then re-open to start the exposure. Other mirrorless cameras work the same, and the early ones (e.g. Lumix G1) had absolutely horrendous release lag; by now most manufacturers have improved greatly, but it's clear Leica has not kept up with the state of the art in this regard. For people like myself, who got into rangefinder cameras in the first place at least in part because of their shorter lag (vs. mechanical SLRs and then vs. mirrorless cameras) it IS a significant step backward… my guess as to why there hasn't been more of a furor is that for many super-prosperous dilettantes, the M11 is their first rangefinder camera, so they have no idea what they're giving up!

    I think, or better, I know I don't agree for several reasons. First of all using the Noctilux for general shooting is nuts, second, the electronic shutter is abysmal, horror, third, if 40 MP is not enough you're just out of you mind. A Cron 50mm will do the trick anytime, or a 35mm, forget the behemoth Noctilux for sure. Fourth, the price of the M11 compared to other cameras with the same specs. At least the M10 brings something to the table, the M11 doesn't. The M11 is the "Leicaflex" syndrome of Wetzlar for this new era in photography.

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not arguing, just asking: what does the M10 bring to the table that the M11 does not, other than less shutter lag (discussed elsewhere in comments)? I realize that the difference between 40mp and 60mp is less than it sounds in terms of actual output size, and the M11's electronic shutter mode certainly looks pretty dreadful based on Matt's badly skewed sample photos (although I've got a hunch that his benefactor's camera is defective) but most people probably won't use the electronic shutter most of the time. Otherwise, what does the M10 offer that the M11 does not?

      I have the Leica M11 and it’s amazing indeed. I also own 12 other mirrorless cameras which cost me a fraction of the M11 price and Have 20X the features of the M11. Yet I choose the M11 when possible every time.
      Is it perfect? NO. I wish it had an EVF to be honest with you, IBIS and a few other things. But still love it over tons of tech every time.
      Not worrying about screwing ND filters in and out is worth all the money IMO. A reason why I never pulled the trigger in any prior M mirrorless.
      And while the Noctilux is big, and may not be your EDC lens, it’s a way better option for portrait and low light best compared to pretty much any lens out there.
      I don’t understand the fact of people talking down the price of Leicas. Yeah I wish they were free!
      If you have worked your hard to be able to afford a Leica what is the issue with it. Call it flex, heritage or just particular preference there are choices out there to suit pretty much every budget and need.

    @thedarkslide 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    1:00 The light weight of the M11 is not a benefit, it's a disadvantage in my opinion. Using the mechanical shutter and 60MP with no image stabilization, the low weight of the camera introduces additional shake, a heavier camera has more inertia and can be held more stable at lower shutter speeds. The effects of camera shake are exaggerated at 60MP compared to the M10. For that reason, I would probably go with the silver version M11.
    1:30 Battery capacity in the M11 needs to be higher as the M11 always reads out the full sensor, even when you are not in live view (without or without EFV). Two batteries on the M10 are all I need, I can charge on in the charger while I use the other. If I run out of juice on the M11, I need to plug it in for charging and cannot use it during that time - so effectively you are going to buy a dedicated charger for the M11 anyway! Also, do you really trust any USB C outlet to charge directly to a USD9,000 camera? Any surge may destroy your camera...
    1:59 The electronic shutter on the M11 really is only useful for still objects with no movement at all as the sensor readout speed is atrocious. Also, in artificial light, you are at risk with banding and other issues.
    I'm still using the original M10 which I bought used not that long ago. I use it mainly with the 35mm Summilux Asph (not the two latest versions, the one with the square hood). At 24MP and compared to shooting my Leica MP on film, I noticed I cannot get away with the same slow shutter speeds I can hand hold on the MP. That issue would be even worse on the M11. I think if I ever got an M11, I would probably set it to the 36MP setting and be done with it. For street, portrait and documentary photography, NOBODY needs 60MP. For architecture and landscape, the M11 is the wrong tool - I got a Canon 5DsR for that, with the genre relevant lenses that are just not available on M mount (24mm tilt shift, 16-35mm and others). I think rather than buying the M11 or Q3 coming from the M10, the SL3 with the 60MP sensor and IBIS will be a much better choice. Or go directly to Hasselblad with their 100MP option.

      Thanks for your detailed comment and observations. Yes 100% agree. I still use my M240 and I'm happy with the 24MP/ photos shot at 1/60. I often think about a smaller M10 but the smaller battery makes me think I'll just stay with my M240 for any street photos. I use the SL most of the time for portraits and the CL sometimes for travel (see other Vegas video). My Q is mainly for weddings but I did a recent video showing that it can be fun with flash.

    Matt, please tell me why a Fujifilm XT5 with a small TT Artisan lens is not a pure minimalist experience at a far lower cost than the M11 with a similar TTA lens? The background is this: I can afford to get an M11 if I I sell my other Fujis and Canons etc, that I haven't used in a while...but is it worth it? In what way? XT5 has 47 MP, just 13 MP less than the M11, and takes good pictures. All sensors are CMOS type. So, is the picture quality so different between the two?

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Kibitzing here since I'm a fellow Fujifilm user… X-T5 is 40 megapixels, not 47 (I have an X-H2 with the same sensor.) It's also a 25x17mm sensor vs. a 36x24mm sensor (which causes much pearl-clutching among traditionalists but no noticeable effect on 99% of picture-taking.) Those aren't huge differences IMO, but one thing that IS different is using manual-focus lenses - Fujifilm's focusing aids (magnification, peaking, and split image) just aren't as fast and positive as a real optical rangefinder, especially in problem light or with low-contrast lenses.

      @carlosmcse 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Anyone who thinks shooting a Fuji with a manual lens is the same as shooting with a rangefinder has never shot a rangefinder.
      But you get whatever camera you want. Somehow Leica haters always find the Leica videos. If you’re happy with your Fuji then just go take photos. Stop feeding the never ending consumerism. Actually, you don’t really need an XT5. Why even have that camera? You could just do it with an XT2. In fact some people prefer the XT1 16MP sensor look.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, you’d need someone to comment who has used Fuji. I can only comment for Leica. I do know that most cameras offer better value. See my video to come on the APSC Leica. The same limits/ negatives will impact all crop sensor bodies.

    I “smashed” the Like button, though neither the Noctilux f/0.95, nor the M11, are my cup of tea. I do like a miminalist camera, without a Visoflex, add-on grip, or thumb-thing, but the lens need not be compact, and the tiniest lenses can be annoyinly small. A Summilux-M 50mm ASPH feels quite “natural,” and an APO Summicron-M 75mm ASPH is hefty, but not too much so. This is what works for me. Others’ tastes may vary. The M11, in and of itself, may be OK, but, my budget will not accommodate new M cameras, these days. (2018, when I bought my new M10, was a much better time to be shopping for a new M camera.)

    Putting that cheap small lens on the M11 is similar to having cross ply tyres on the Porsche…. Bizarre decision to shoot Noctilux wide open all the time, what’s gained artistically in doing this for the infinity subjects? I really think you’d benefit from having a proper testing system for your channel, it seems to have got more haphazard, eg recently the selling of all LLL lenses having initially given them positive reviews. Their performance hasn’t dropped, but would have been revealed at the outset with more rigour.
    The visoflex2 is very useful for 21mm & 90mm lenses and if I need critical framing of 35mm as a glasses wearer. That said it’s off more often than on my M11 now I’ve got the hang of M system. It was really helpful to train me initially, coming from Q2 and other mirrorless cameras in recent years.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks yes the EVF is a perfect stepping stone from Q or SL series cameras. Sorry if you misunderstood my LLL videos. I sold one of the 3 and rave about the remaining 2. The SPII I sold was fun for digital but my heart is in film. I try to buy lenses to use on film cameras (too). As mentioned I had the TT28 with me as I like the look on my own cameras. I didn't know i'd be getting to play with the M11 and just wanted a nice small lens on it to use it like a proper RF camera (as I shoot my various film Leica). Agree there is no point focusing at infinity at 0.95. No image was focused at infinity, The 1 cliff beach shot was stopped down for that reason. (Equally there is no point owning the 0.95 to stop it down. Get a Lux or Cron APO if you prefer 1.4 or f2. I just used the lens that camera with the camera. All good points though.

    people with little to no artistic ability concern themselves more with their cameras than actually creating quality art

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I always hear that, and yet (having worked for an art supply store) I know that skilled painters are picky about their brushes and (now working for a dance company) I know that high-level ballerinas are VERY picky about what pointe shoes they wear. (There's a huge angst throughout the ballet world now because a well-known brand moved its factory from the US to eastern Europe, and many people can no longer get the specific shoes they may have worn for their entire careers!) It's not so much that you couldn't produce "quality art" with something other than your favorite tool... it's more that lots of minor nuisances and inconveniences and accommodations add up to "friction" that distracts you from your creative process. I think Matt has done a video about this...

    • @rodnyg7952
