  • Can You Use Head Transplants to Cheat Death? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
    BrainBridge's new announcement about their AI-mechanised system for performing head transplants marks a significant leap in medical science, merging the fields of neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and artificial intelligence. Patients suffering from conditions such as complete paralysis, terminal cancers, and severe neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's could potentially receive new, healthy bodies, vastly improving their quality of life. BrainBridge's announcement represents a groundbreaking medical breakthrough with the potential to transform the treatment of severe medical conditions. However, it also brings with it a host of scientific, ethical, and societal challenges that must be carefully navigated. Are head transplants ethical? Are we as a society ready to accept this? Can you use it to cheat death? Palki Sharma tells you.

      @@Islam-Unraveled If, as you believe, there is an almighty, omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent God, who created the earth or world, please let me know why did he create it? This world of woes and miseries, a veritable, eternal combination of numberless tragedies! Not a single soul being perfectly satisfied.
      Pray, don't say that it is His Law! If he is bound by any law, he is not omnipotent. He is another slave like ourselves. Please don't say that it is his enjoyment. Nero burnt one Rome. He killed a very limited number of people. He created very few tragedies, all to his perfect enjoyment. And, what is his place in History? By what names do the historians mention him? All the venomous epithets are showered upon him. Pages are blackened with invective diatribes condemning Nero, the tyrant, the heartless, the wicked. One Changezkhan sacrificed a few thousand lives to seek pleasure in it and we hate the very name. Then, how are you going to justify your almighty, eternal Nero, who has been, and is still causing numberless tragedies every day, every hour and every minute? How do you think to support his misdoings which surpass those of Changez every single moment? I say why did he create this world -a veritable hell, a place of constant and bitter unrest? Why did the Almighty create man when he had the power not to do it? What is the justification for all this? Do you say, to award the innocent sufferers hereafter and to punish the wrongdoers as well? Well, well: How far shall you justify a man who may dare to inflict wounds upon your body to apply a very soft and soothing ointment upon it afterwards? How far the supporters and organisers of the Gladiator institution were justified in throwing men before the half-starved furious lions to be cared for and well locked after if they could survive and could manage to escape death by the wild beasts? That is why I ask: Why did the conscious supreme being create this world and man in it? To seek pleasure? Where, then, is the difference between him and Nero?

      @fl00fydragon 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Why not
      The human body is literally a machine
      Replacing it is a valid strategy
      It will start with brain dead donors but that same tech can then be advanced to cloned bodies or artificial bodies.
      Pair the latter with medical nanotechnology, possibly the kind that can take the place of individual brain cells as they die while copying all of their geometry and function and you have effectively eliminated disease and aging while completely liberating humanity via morphological liberty.

    We have to find a way to keep a head alive without a body first for this to be secure... ie mechanical lungs kidneys heart and biothreat cleaner like blood filter for cleaning unvanted contamination and stabilising standard content values... main problems i see are atifical hearth doesnt have chemical signal reading sebsor not neural signal reading capabilities which makes it lose sync...

      You think doctors intending to perform this surgery are unaware of the risk of brain cell death due to blood loss and oxygen starvation? This fact has been known to the medical community for a very long time. To assert that neurosurgeons would be unaware of a fact taught in first year biology is downright absurd.
      Furthermore, neurosurgeons have already been working to solve this issue. The technique of perfusion cooling, which greatly extends the time brain cells can live without oxygen by slowing the metabolic rate (and is used in brain trauma emergency treatment), was first developed by Dr. Robert White *specifically* for use in head transplants way back in the 1960's. They could also use an artificial heart to deliver oxygenated blood to the head for some time, similar to techniques used in bypass surgery. I'm sorry to say but you are the one who lacks knowledge my friend.

    When I imagine that this might be possible in the future, two feelings arise within me: discomfort and hope. The first feeling is discomfort and fear, as this operation seems like something out of a dystopian film. The second feeling is hope, that such measures could improve both the quality and length of life. Both feelings are inherent to human nature:
    The first feeling is natural, as such an operation could profoundly impact how we perceive ourselves as finite beings. This new way of thinking could be so fundamentally different from previous ones that it might be said we would become different people.
    The second feeling, hope, is also natural. This operation could have positive effects by eliminating undesirable conditions such as aging and paralysis, leading to an incredible increase in well-being.

    Putting a head on a new body could result in excruciating pain and death because the head is not accustomed to the body and is not tuned with the body nerves. The amount of new impulses coming to the brain would overload it.
    It can also be the other way around where the brain sends the wrong inputs tto the new body therefore killing the body first.
    Overall you probably can't accomodate a head with a body from someone else even if initially the operation is successful
