  • Why Ghana & other African Nations are turning to Nuclear Power | Vantage with Palki Sharma
    Ghana is inviting companies to bid for the right to construct its first nuclear power plant. The US, France, Russia, China and South Korea are all in the race to partner with Ghana. Ghana is the latest African country to turn to nuclear power to try and meet demand. The continent is home to 600 million people who lack access to electricity. Nuclear energy is more efficient that traditional fossil fuel power generation and renewable energy. And African nations need to ramp up their power production fast, to cater to their growing populations. So the African countries are turning to nuclear-capable countries, especially Russia with its state-firm Rosatom, to help them build nuclear power plants.

      Wrong. Ghana's nuclear power ambition has been in the local news for almost twelve years. Ghana became nuclear ready six years ago. Ghana's first nuclear reactor was built by the Russians in 1964. This lead to the establishment of the Atomic Energy Commission. Apart from South Africa and Egypt, Ghana is the front runner on the African continent in terms of technological know-how and institutional readiness. Ghana has build nuclear knowledge and soft infrastructure over 50/60 years.
      In simple terms, a nuclear power station installed today in Ghana can be run TOTALLY by Ghanaians. Other African countries, e.g. Mali, Burkina Faso etc will need to rely on external/foreign operators.
      What Ghana does not have is MONEY.

    • @MavenWalsh
      @MavenWalsh 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bowgate3817 You want to know why Ghana doesn't have the money? it's because they allow FOREIGN companies to extract their oil/gold/diamonds, then set the price for which they want to buy all of it. of course, those foreigners give them the bare minimum for what they steal. Any country that has its own gold/diamonds/oil has no real reason for being poor except for the reasons I just gave you.

      By working with their masters the USA and its allies? Do you not see which nations lined up? Do you see Russia or China there? Ghana is going down on this pathway of reducing itself into an insignificant slave colony of the West. They are going to buy Ghana itself and let the people live there as slaves. Whoever funds it for them will own it and make the money from the electricity bills. Ghana needs a revolution fast.
      This is at a time when Africa is decolonising. Sad.

      Africa is basically going to be the last powerhouse of the Earth till the end. They birthed the human race for the first 20,000 years, then got wronged, enslaved and looted and ultimately will emerge as the ones to hold the human civilizational power for the last 20,000 years of human existence in a region-wise power-shifting cycle.

      Not realy, less ppl have died from nuclear power than solar or wind power.
      Anyway, micro nuclear powerplants are the future, they are small enough to not beeing able to melt down (impossible since they cant provide enough heat for that to happend, and its impossible to make weapon out of it, so if any terrorist gets their hands on it, they can only use it to heat up their homes for free)

    Dear Palki Sharma,
    Thank you for advocating such a big issue in favour of Africa.
    Africa is blessed in getting too much kids but lacks in the capabilities and capacities to provide her children with the necessary provisions to enjoy a thriving life.
    One of the key factors crippling her [Africa, not only Ghana] economy is shortage of POWER at household level and for various economic sectors to boost the outcomes of public service deliveries, production and productivities.
    Thus, resorting to NUCLEAR POWER SUPPLY has to be not an optional rather a matter of existential undertaking if they have a plan of life in all it's fullness so that the future power supply commensurates the demands of their exploding population.

    By comparison, South Africa generates 58,000 megawatts for a population of just 60m.

    Africa has over abundant gas supply but no we want to use nuclear. If playing with fire was a continent.
