In the Existential Hope-podcast (www.existentialhope.com), we invite scientists to speak about long-termism. Each month, we drop a podcast episode where we interview a visionary scientist to discuss the science and technology that can accelerate humanity towards desirable outcomes.
Morgan Levine, Altos Labs | On Existential Hope & The Future of Aging
Morgan Levine is a ladder-rank Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Yale School of Medicine and a member of both the Yale Combined Program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, and the Yale Center for Research on Aging. Her work relies on an interdisciplinary approach, integrating theories and methods from statistical genetics, computational biology, and mathematical demography to develop biomarkers of aging for humans and animal models using high-dimensional omics data. As PI or co-Investigator on multiple NIH-, Foundation-, and University-funded projects, she has extensive experience using systems-level and machine learning approaches to track epigenetic, transcriptomic, and proteomic changes with aging and incorporate
this information to develop measures of risk stratification for major chronic diseases, such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Her work also involves development of systems-level outcome measures of aging, aimed at facilitating evaluation for geroprotective interventions.

It would be great for Dr. Levine to write some blog entries or make a few videos that explain the gist of what it is that she does. The more people out there that understand the problem space & techniques, then the greater chance of leaps & bounds on the path to a solution.

Altos is exciting. I hope we truly get to a point where we can extend lifespan significantly and/or reverse aging (especially the visual aspect...call me shallow lol). I just wanna look like I used to look when I was in my 30s :(

I plugged my mother's bloodwork tests into the Levine Biological Age Calculator recently and she has aged minus 15 years during the last 3 years from improved nutrition. I joked with her that if she keeps going like that, she may lose her Social Security benefits. She still has room for more improvement and I am very curious how long this healing/rejuvenation process will continue. Medications held her back a bit but she is now down to just Synthroid after having been on more than a dozen including insulin. She told me earlier this week that she feels like a new mom. I'm thinking that age calculator metrics may provide some very important psychological feedback (encouragement) as a person regains their health through improved lifestyle choices.

To dr Levine: from your perspective, which should the current goal of science be: live healthier or live longer? We seem to to have made wonderful progress in the last 100 years on living longer, but we’ve also been healthier for more of that extra life. If this is true, should we try to extend the healthy lives of those who die young or are chronically Ill while in their prime? I think grandparents would gladly trade some of their remaining years to extend the health and life of their children and grandchildren. I may be wrong. But I would.

We can walk and chew gum at the same time, so to speak. What Altos and similar companies are working on will have the same effects on everyone. If we work on understanding the biological mechanisms of aging, it will inevitably also result in massive advances in illness in younger people and chronic health issues.
I've had chronic health issues for 20 years, since I was 22, that worsened over time and then plateaued. Obviously, they've massively impacted my life during such a critical period. But I look at the research into longevity as a way to help my non-age-related issues as well. Drug discovery, for instance, used to take years and cost billions, and then the drug might not even work. This year, they discovered a drug that may treat liver cancer in 30 days at little cost, using AlphaFold 2. And AlphaFold 2.3.2 is now out.
Likewise, brain imaging just became 64 million times sharper. That will be invaluable for age-related neurodegeneration but also in treating the mental health problems that I have struggled with for 30 years. It's all tied together.

I struggle to get a sense of how these fields are doing in manpower. At times they appear to be in good hands with high competition, while at other times they seem to be reaching out for as much young blood as they can, without intending the pun.

They have no shortage of manpower. Altos, for instance, is offering salaries that are 10x that of research institutions.

Helen Carter's been really helpful for real, trading with her has been going smoothly for me as I've been able to raise over almost 4 btc when I started at 10k in usd about 3months ago. I would advise y'all to trade your asset now rather than hodl for a future you aren't sure about.
