    I sent this to my husband when he was in Iraq. They were halfway through the first episode and the CO walked in. Made them restart it. Then posted an announcement the first episode would be replayed in a larger area the next day followed by episode 2. It was awesome. It was passed around to several units before he came home with it. My husband was one of the Veterans that died on a VA waiting list 7 years ago. Band of Brothers is sitting on my bookshelf. The insides still have Iraqi sand in it.

    Captain Sobel wasn't a demotion, it was a sidewards move. He was sent back to take charge of a training school instead of leading easy company, he was good a training not combat leadership

    • @macmcleod1188
      @macmcleod1188 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Sobel also parachuted into Normandy with the rest of the invasion. And was recalled to duty during the Korean War.
      Band of Brothers reflects the opinions of this group of people.
      Don't get me wrong, the historical record reflects that Sobel was not well liked and not a good combat officer. But this shows up in other areas such as their views on Dyke and their belief that Bland was dead.
      It looks like Dyke had been shot in the shoulder in reality and may have been suffering from the same kind of combat fatigue as Buck. He had won multiple awards for bravery earlier in the war and may have even saved some Band of Brothers lives in Market Garden. But the band knew buck and liked him so they were sympathetic to him.

    I've always believed that Capt Sobel was moved to the training school, because the major realised that although he was good at training top notch soldiers he would be a liability in the field so reassigned him to where his skills would actually be useful but not risk any lives in the actual war

    • @iKvetch558
      @iKvetch558 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I agree...they made sure they could continue to utilize his talent for training and organization, but kept him off the battlefield preventing him from getting all his men killed. The Army did not always do as good a job at detecting bad combat officers and keeping them out of combat. 👍

      @@deving9793 I get the feeling that Colonel Sink reassigning Captain Sobel was his way of dealing with a delicate situation at a delicate time. He obviously felt that he and the rest of command missed something in Sobel's combat leadership that the men picked up on. He also knew he couldn't just allow the "mutiny" occur without consequences as it undermines the all important chain of command. This was his "solution"...and it was a damn good one.

    When all the Sergeants in a unit are willing to risk courts martial over serving under an officer, you known there is something critically wrong and it was the only way to get the attention of the top brass. Sobel knew all the right things to say to his superiors, but the Sergeants know. Good thing Sobel was punished-promoted. He was too bad of a field /command officer to get just himself killed (if somebody from Easy didn't do it for him first). As for Guarnere, either that message should have been held, or Guarnere pulled from the jump. My Gunny would have. You do *not* want somebody in that head space in combat. He;d be as dangerous as Sobel.

    Different work ethic maybe, they did live through the depression so they had little to lose.
    But it was also a time when there was more faith in the government, but WWII was also understood to be a national emergency.
    Ignorance is bliss there no way anyone could’ve imagined what they were getting into, so much of what was done in WWII was new and untested so I’ve always wondered if there was more excitement than fear.

    This isnt fully a documentary, however most everything in the series actually happened and they screened the episodes for the surviving members of Easy company so they could approve of it. There are some creative licenses, and some times stories of multiple real life people get combined in to 1 character, but its really only for time, clarity, and so they can work with a more focused cast. All the people talking in the beginning are actual Easy company members that are featured in the series.

    I love this series, you just got yourself a new subscriber! Thanks for putting in a bit of the interviews at the beginning, make sure to watch the information that comes right after every episode, in this one I think it was a quote from eisenhower but in some others it's very informative of things like medals or numbers of people killed in particular battles.

    My father was airborne....194th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 17th Airborne (Thunder from Heaven!)...entered combat in the Battle of the Bulge January 3, 1945, fought in the Rhineland Campaign and participated in Operation Varsity in March 1945 (which is discussed in episode 9 of this series). Very proud to be his son.

    The compliment was real but also a way out, he could train the best but was himself useless in the field.
    So he was "Promoted" to go train men but never to lead them. And he definitely saw it as a slap to the face "You're taking my company ?"

  • @mithroch

    Sobel wasn't the one that started the cadence during the spaghetti run. Winters did it to help get the men's minds something else to focus on. Notice after they stared the cadence... their posture changed and they began to run in unison.

      @ctpLynae 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another clue that it wasnt Sobel who initiated the cadence was the fact that he stopped running and stared in obvious shock as the men started running past him. I also believe Winters wanted to get them doing cadence so that they would have a sense of unity in that run. It was no longer "every man for himself", but "the men beside me are fighting this battle with me", and it was a much more beneficial mindset for all of them.... except Sobel.

    The spaghetti scene is something all Infantrymen go through at some point. It's training you to be able to handle puking in a stressed environment like, if a snap opsec is issued for QRF and we have to move NOW or your camp comes under IDF with MASCAL evac... I got it thrice during training at Sand Hill then again during FTX at Campbell and once more during JRTC at Polk
