Graded Stakes Triple for Irad Ortiz, Jr. Leads to FoundationDetox.com Jockey of the Week Title

With more stakes wins than any other jockey, Irad Ortiz, Jr. was voted Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for September 9-16, 2019. One jockey, two countries and three stakes wins: jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. won more stakes than any other jockey last week, all graded, at Churchill Downs and Woodbine.
Ortiz’ stakes triple started on Saturday at Churchill Downs with a win in the first race of the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the $200,000 Iroquois Stakes (G3). Ortiz and heavy favorite Dennis’ Moment ($2.80) did not disappoint, following through on the hype surrounding the 2-year-old colt after his 19-length maiden-breaking win at Ellis.
On Sunday, Ortiz traveled north to ride at Woodbine and swept the two graded stakes there, starting with the $250,000 Summer Stakes (G1). Ortiz and Decorated Invader ($6.80) closed to defeat a field of ten 2-year-olds on the turf by nearly two lengths.
He returned two races later to take the same race for fillies, the $250,000 Natalma Stakes (G1), this time tracking the pace to win narrowly with Abscond ($21.00).
Ortiz was the second leading rider by stakes earnings among all North American jockeys last week with $350,792 in his six stakes starts. He was sixth by total earnings, adding $457,175 to his 2019 total of $21,302,878. To date in his career, he has amassed over $165 million.
Ortiz finished in the money on 65% of his mounts with four wins, and now stands at 235 wins in 1,108 starts in 2019. He has 2,329 career wins in 12,475 races. In addition to his three stakes wins, he also won a race at Belmont on Friday, and rode at three different tracks in three days.
