Use to pick up hitchhikers 17 at the time. Picked up young white couple on highway headed home. The minute they got into my car my spider senses told me huge mistake. The man got in the back of my VW bug & the woman sat in the front seat. I immediately pulled over before my exit to home & told them they had to get out. The woman looked apprehensive & looked to the man for direction. I immediately looked at him & firmly stated command to get out. At that point I had decided if they forced me to drive I would ram car into sound barrier. No way would I allow myself to surrender. He had an evil smirk on his face & sized me up. For whatever his reasoning he nodded to woman to get out . No words were spoken between them. Once he got out I sped away spinning my tires. I never picked anybody up after that

I had a very similar experience when I was a lifeguard on Cape Cod. I was hitchhiking and started to get into a VWBug. My sixth sense went into high alert, and i backed out of the back seat quickly. The driver became furious, and my friend and I ran towards a store. I think my gut feeling saved our lives.

My ex-wife was drugged and assaulted too. It’s sickeningly common. The kidnapping aspect is an even scarier and darker layer. My friend, a 6’ 7” guy, got his cup switched with his girlfriend’s cup one time while out and it was drugged. He could not move, but was awake. Imagine what a dose that large would have done to the girl. Again, this stuff happens so regularly.

Yes it does and it pisses me off to, and there's 2 main culprits, #1 increasingly activists certain ideologically aligned DA's and courts routinely letting rapists pedophiles and etc. off with 2-4 years over and over again non stop instead of execution or bare minimum life in prison or a psych ward, and #2 women traveling alone to 3rd world places or heck even 1st world hitchhiking alone is absolutely absurd, false empowerment is a dangerous thing. I get its not just that but no one will convince me if these 2 in particular could be worked on cases would go down a ton at least.

Someone tried to drug me once, but thankfully at the time I didn't really drink alcohol so I only took a few sips of my drink that night. But I felt "off" for hours and ended up sleeping over my friend's house because I didn't feel safe to drive.
Later as I got more experienced drinking I realized that I wasn't drunk that night -- what I felt wasn't "drunk" and there's no way half a Jack and Coke would make me drunk for hours anyway.

I will not tolerate and recommend no woman doing so without expertise and possessing a firearm on their person .. I grew up with many firearms in the household as my father was a combat veteran and they were simply normal and we went shooting regularly even as young as 7 years old and it makes me feel good to have a decent firearm LOADED on my gun belt with safety engaged.. already chased away drunk campers who were shooting off their shotguns in the dark which is prime example of totally irresponsible and dangerous ppl .. one round in the air of my magnum round shut them up and they went away quickly.. they didn’t know where I was but I knew where they were ..
a gun training course and firing off a few hundred rounds for practice and developing comfort with the handgun or rifle is all it takes .. it’s fun and any new type of gun takes some getting used to

It reminds me of an incident in montana in about 1989. Me and a friend were too young to drink but we stopped by a bar to see someone he knew. We pulled out of the parking lot to leave and a van was ahead of us leaving the same bar. We were only a few car lengths behind this van and it was night. The on coming traffic lit up the occupants and i was shocked at what i was seeing while my oblivious friend was laughing and talking about something else completely. What i saw was a hulk of a man in the driver side throwing massive blows into the side of the head of some female with a thin build. I just remember the 3-5 crashing blows as her head pinged off the window and her hair flew. She was being rag dolled in that seat. It was a sort of shock in slow motion as i lifted a finger to point at this but my friend is ignoring me or talking over me and just then the van takes the right exit onto i90. and we went straight. I never even got him to shut up long enough to tell him what just happened. I just kinda rode in silence for awhile. Eyes wide. It's not until i am older that i realize it wasn't just an abusive guy or a dispute, but i think this guy was trying to punch the life out of her. He was trying to kill her im sure now that i have perspective. I'd seen other brutal things at that age so i never really had a gauge for what was over kill. This incident has haunted me my whole life.

To out in the country a long ways from where we started. then they were arguing again but i could hear them. He didn't want to let me go but she did. She said shes a mother. We happened to have been paid that night. I had been working 16 hour days for months and had 400$ on me. From what i gather he wanted to rob me and dump me. But she didn't let it happen. I finally got back to my car. They quit working. I seen them camping a few months later behind a big rock walking trail. I kept on the trail when i came back through they packed up and were gone. They only worked a month at work. I think they lived in their van. They were a pretty couple i believe she had children somewhere close but i wouldn't know who or where. Its was one scary night i didn't get home till midmorning. I was scared.

only an immature person would call you names for not wanting to hitchhike. they were probably the kids in school that would tease you if you didn't want to do drugs. thank you for sharing the story with us. I am a very cautious person in my older years and would never do anything alone unless I had no choice. take care.

I agree never to hitchhike but i disagree with you on thinking the world is a good place. I think its a bad place with alot of bad people. There are just some good people mixed in. Then there are bad people that wear a mask and comeoff as a good person. So you never know.

I would say there are a few really bad people and a few really good people but there is a huge majority in the middle who can be easily influenced as they are weak.

Something along this line happened to me but with just a older man camping near to where I was. I won't get in nitty gritty but this was in the early 90's and I've camped out other times and hiked but after this ordeal it has been with someone i know. I never camped alone after this and it's a crying shame that someone who only wants to experience and explore things on their own can't anymore without being hurt or assaulted by someone who doesn't care about life or about anyone trying to live and enjoy this great planet in a pure form. He broke me that's for sure but never again!

Hey Bryan....someone mentioned below about Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka two Canadians (who met in 1987)....this is what they would do.... go around looking for young girls to kidnap, rape and kill.
I would strongly urge you to mention them to this lady... Bernardo is still in jail but Homolka only got 12 years and has been out for years - she did a plea bargain but it was shown later that she lied and was a willing participant in it all. She should be in jail...She lives in Quebec(married with 3 kids) last I heard.
Bernardo had been doing this for awhile before meeting Homolka (he could have had someone else who was willing to go along with this as well prior to Homolka...who knows). Would not hurt to mention it to this woman as being American she might not have heard about this case. It was well reported on in Canada years ago and lots of info on the internet about them now.

Friend of mine stopped in Wyoming near the reservation. He is 6 foot 2 and had a friend meet him at a local bar. He traveled on his job and his employer would cover food, drinks and room. He figured he could catch up on old times with his friend. He said he doesn't remember much. Said he woke up naked face down on motel floor with door wide open. His friend was passed out in hallway no where near his room. Oddly they both was drugged but neither was raped or got anything stolen from them. Only thing he remembers is his friend sitting down at his table when he met him there in bar.

I'm glad Sherry ended up alive. Unfortunately, she did not listen to her instincts and get away from these two when she felt reservations about the guy. A woman hitchhiking alone is never safe. Many years ago I used to hitchhike alone sometimes. Unfortunately, I never experienced such a scary experience but I did have some close calls and stopped. Even when traveling in your vehicle, camping or hiking alone in isolated areas is a big risk. Sorry, but that's just the state of our world right now.

There are many un guarded roads and paths along the border but to pick one with a small chance of being detected might require local knowledge. Many of them have cameras and are under surveillance. Also there are Indian reserves that straddle the line and are often used for nefarious purposes.@@frala2398

No, your advice of giving to people not to hitch hike was a very good advice and good idea to mention because this world has a lot of serial killers. A lot of people who practice wrong doing kidnappings rapes, you name it. And it is dangerous out there. There's a lot of people with schizophrenia who are mentally ill people who like to just? Do kidnappings and wrong doings to people just for the fun of it. And that is wrong so all of us who want to enjoy life need to be very, very careful and do not do any hitchhiking at all period
