I finally moved to Hilo in August (I've lived there for a year before back in 2013 - 2014), and now that I'm here, I have no intentions of ever leaving. I would consider living on Kauai as well as it is beautiful and less touristy there, but O‘ahu and Maui are way too crazy for me.

Kia ora (hello) from Aotearoa (New Zealand) fellow polynesians. It's so cool to see how similar our languages are. I speak fluent Te reo Māori (Māori language) and I guessed immediately what 'pehea 'oe?' meant. In Māori language we say 'Kei te pehea koe?'.

The okina (‘) or glottal stop signifies that a letter is missing in or before a word It is usually a (k).
In Hawaiian whenever two vowels are together there must be glottal stop between them e.g. ka’a = or car in Hawaiian which is now pronounced as two syllables.
      Hokulea, 3 syllables, Hokule’a, 4 syllables.

I’m currently learning Hawaiian and it’s a little easy because it’s in the same language group as Te Reo Māori. It’s fun and exciting dialects.

Thank you so much for these videos! I am from Ireland. I play a lot of ukulele and I also teach it. I would love to visit Hawaii someday but I want to learn a few phrases before I go. I find it quite difficult but I'd love to be able to have a basic conversation. Mahalo!

Me and my friend are wanting to learn Hawaiian so she can truly connect with her culture. Her mom never taught her Hawaiian, and she never knew why. I am an Indigenous person of Mexico (Mixteco) and I want to keep endangered languages alive for future generations. Hawaiian is a beautiful language that is not often spoken amongst Hawaiian families that are from the mainland (from my experience) 😓
