    Thank You for the video, I have always regarded this historical town one of Michigans best kept gems. It's an honor to walk the streets of this town.

    I will never forget Calumet. Rode a Soo Line passenger train into town in 1967, February. Got off and was hit by the coldest blast of air I ever can recall. Walked from the depot to the center of town, ate a meal and walked back to the train and remained in the Pullman car the rest of the day until it returned to Chicago. Snow was piled to the 2nd story of the houses near the depot. I wondered how anyone could stand to spend a winter in the UP.

      That's what I wonder too, LOL.. regarding how could anyone spend a winter there. I knew someone that lives in Calumet. Haven't heard from him in ages, though.

      Wow, a passenger trin n 1967, I'm envious, I love Calumet. I lived off the grid in the Hiawatha National Forest for seven years, walked a mile to my car each day, one of the profound periods of my life.

    Thanks for this. My great grandfather, grandfather and six great uncles lived in Calumet and worked for C&H. I was there once in 1960.

    My great X 3 grandfather came over from Cornwall with his father and brother. They separated and went in three directions. John Henry Rowe stayed in the UP and never saw his father and brother again. He married and worked in the Quincy mine. My Dad left the UP at 12 and moved to Detroit, where he eventually married and raised his family (me). The family names in Keewanaw besides Rowe, include Ball, Blee and Buzzo. I know I have relatives there, I'd love to meet them. I live in Florida now. Great channel! I just subscribed.

    My Great Aunt's taught school in Calumet. Lucy Locke and Marjorie Dean Grierson. Thier father James Grierson was surface forman of the Calumet and Helica mine. No place on earth like the Keweenaw. Been here many times.

      My mom was from Calumet. My grandmother was a teacher too. I remember visiting 2 sisters who were teachers Lucille and I can't remember the other ones name. The Grierson name sure sounds familiar too.

    My mothers father lived here around 1905-1907. Then he moved back to Sweden to Tärendö in the north of sweden. I think it have impacted my life more than I know. His two sisters stayed, so I got relatives in Michigan and USA.

    Do you live here? I was told that in the early 1900's this was the largest Croatian populated city in all of North America, U.S.. My Great, Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandmother, their children and My other Great Grandfather are all Croatian and lived in Greenland, not too far from here. The men all worked at the Victoria Cooper Mines. This is how I came across this video. Thank you for posting.

      I don't know the numbers for the Croatian population, but there was a Croatian Catholic church at one time. Also, I can buy Croatian foods (won't try to spell) up here at local restaurant. The local Catholic church has Croatian foods at the fall festival. I live north of Calumet, so this is my town if I need some groceries.

      Also, it is one of the very few places people bake strudel like my Aunt Mary did (born in Croatia), not German style.

    My grandmother who was 1 of 12 grew up in Calumet...her name was Lillian Kentala. I have fond memories of visiting Calumet back on the farm where she grew up. I think her brother Edward ended up with the farm then his son. I'm sure I have many many second cousins...too bad the extended family didn't get together.

    Still, it could be said that Calumet has done well to survive at all. Many mining towns, once the mineral they're mining dries up, it is usually a ghost town within 10 years. Yet these people were wise enough to use tourism to survive

    • @littlecasino60
      @littlecasino60 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting. I wasn't aware Calumet is a tourist town. I knew someone who lived there but he didn't mention that.

      From 33,000 people to 6,500 people, and more buildings fall down than are put up.

      Calumet city illinois. Not calumet michigan. I dont think they have a police dept. There is a state police bardacks there though.
