How does the oil travel down and then back up the tube to get in to the burn chamber? Is it just that the oil is so hot it moves up the tube before it comes out?

You are a king. Watching your videos was very informative and they move at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow, but with just the right detail needed. I had a concern about the amount of heat generated being too much for the heat shields in the stove in the house. The reason for my interest is in creating a metal smelter to cast bronze screws for boats and gun parts. My wife says it has to be outside :( Then again, she is a better shot than I am at close range. So I have been working on my zig zag running.
I have a friend who does his own bio - diesel for his truck. He goes around to the local fast food places and buys their used fryer oil, strains it and whatever. He also uses it in a waste oil burner like the one you have, and it always smells so good. in fact it makes you hungry LOL.

Thank you, I live in a van so I think it would be easier if I just had a gate valve and look inside the fire to see how much is coming into it as I move around the country,i don't want anything that can spill or make a mess.

Cool Tepco. If you can make a video when you have it working that would be great. These unpowered stoves and burners work well if you have sufficient flue length to generate the draw / suction. This version of the updraft burner I have been using in the min ion and in my house stove can be improved but is working great for me as is. I have some ideas for the mk2 model. The beauty is they are cheap to make and run. Cheers Gerry

I also needed to comment on the Burner Chamber. On your Burner Chamber - This is the BEST DESIGNED that I have seen on TH-cam and GLAD you have come up with through your Experiments with Trials and Errors. I did one just like it, but it's an Air Fed rather than Natural Draft, but works GREAT, and THANKS to you !!! Overall, I wanted to THANK YOU for your time and efforts, I did LEARN a lot from you and if anyone is watching, PLEASE COPY his BURNING CHAMBER.... Hahaha, I sure will. I am waiting on a Water Tank. At my stage, I only TESTED my Burn Chamber and Drips Out-Door on a contraption like yours right here. I have a NEW 65 Gallon Oil Barrel, but my Dad won't let me put that ugly thing in the House, LOL. So I am waiting for a NICE 40 Gallon Water Heater Steel Tank. But I have to build it with a lot SAFELY features so my Dad won't worry about burning the House down, LOL. I have to put bunch of stuff on mine so our House won't be burnt down, LOL. I know you talked about SAFETY... But I don't really have a choice... Wood Smokes is killing me :(((((.... I have been sleeping outside in our backyard in a Tent on good weather nights so I don't suffer. We have Propane, but it's expensive. Anyway, at my stage, I don't really have a choice... But once I am DONE, I will do a walk through just like this Video and make sure to GIVE you FULL CREDITS on the Burn Chamber :)))
Hi Jod. It sounds like your flue is not long enough. When airtight and long enough all the smoke from the stove even with the door open gets drawn into the stove kind of like a vacuum cleaner. If you look at the video above the smoke from the firelighter gets drawn back into the stove. If the flue is about 4 yards long and 5 or 6 inches in diameter you should be good to go. Gerry in the states we call that piece that allows you to connect two pieces of pipe while seeing whatever you have passing through, it's called an air gap

Hi Raymond. It's an easy build and works very well without fans. I was using this burner last night in the shed in the cooker stove and it really lashes out the heat. The weather here is very like that in Scotland. Not like Spain lol. Cheers Gerry

For someone with an inside rocket mass heater do you think that having an oil burner outside that would blow forced hot air (not bad fumes) through the wall of a cabin and into the mass heater duct-work would be a good idea?
nice simple effective burner, have built a foundry and a mini forge running off waste engine oil, Im just about to build a pool heater and will probably copy your design, i'll give you a shout if i do.
Hi Turbo Conqering mega Eagle. It's a very easy to make little burner but it does need good draw from your chimney / flue to make it all work. My own flue in the shed is 4m and in the house like in this video its about 8 metres and provides that roar you can hear in all the videos I use this burner in. Cheers Gerry
Hello, i got the same plan for building a waste oil stove. As i did not want to use a blower i'm verry happy you shared your project with us !! One thing i would maybe say to you is that i'm gonna use outside air because a stove like this needs alot of air and i don't want so suck that in my house i rather use it directly from outside in the stove for a maximum heat in the house !! Thanks !!!
Hi moekakke. Yes outside air is good. houses here have room vents to the outside so there is plenty of air for combustion but if this was airtight I would definitely have ported air to the stove. Thanks for the comment Cheers Gerry
What i mean is, when you connect the stove directly to the outside air with a tube you don't pull the cold air in de house...
@@moekakke I was wondering the same thing... a LOT of air has to come from somewhere. Don't want to pull this in thru the cracks and crevices in the house.
@@wabbott444 i ran into another problem... i thought to have allot of waste oil but then you got this fire and sure it go's well but the 5 liter every 2 months from my car just does not do the trick... Sure i have some oil from people who's car i maintained and some waste frying oil but that is not enough and waste oil is hard to get when looking for 1000 liter each year. So now i got to this new free source and that is coal. Here in Belgium people changed to gas and many houses still have a whole lot in the ched or basement so when these property's get sold or renovated people just give them away for free in the summer you just have to go pick them up. I already have a pile for 5 years atleast now it's so easy !!! I sure hope those inviralmental freaks keep making all those fools crazy to not want to burn coal anymore !! ;-)
@@moekakke ha ha... yes, I think I would run into the sourcing issue too. I have restaurants in my immediate area, but without asking, I am guessing there's a line of people who are willing to take it... I think I might look at pellets next.

FYI to all Wood Ash mixed with water to a paste will clean your wood stove glass really well little elbow grease and wipe it clean.
I use a razor and scrape, cleans it well enough

Great work gerry. I recently bought an oil stove for my mancave. It works well as it has wicks and runs all the time so has a constant heat. The downside is its costly to run about 30 litres a week and iam heating a room that isn't used all the time. So I wonder could I convert it to a pot burner and use the Toby valve on the stove to meter the kerosene as I don't intend to run waste oil. It would mean that I have heat on demand and not heating the place when not in use. Any thoughts? It's a hunter stove similar to the Stanley oisin. Keep up the good work and good to see a fellow Irish man on TH-cam for a change.
Hi Tony How big is the Man Cave and how well sealed and insulated. It's gas all this youtube stuff. I fly paragliders and had lots of videos on another channel but all you saw was my feet, hands, country side and only music with no talking. But then I made a burner and it worked great so I put a video up which was worse than my current ones and it took off. Getting close now to 100K subs which is nuts.Thanks for commenting 👍👍

Hi Mickey. There is no fan. The stove pulls all the air in through the bottom ash door. The burner is my own design and I use it in lots of the videos after this one. Check out the playlist for more info and a look at this burner in my other stoves. Cheers Gerry

thanks Gerry for showing the bottle connector! Is there any rating on the glass you'd recommend? I'm having difficulty with finding it, or may just use Pyrex like you did originally.
Hi Erik. I recently changed the glass in the stove in this video which is rated at 700 degrees C. I used the old glass in the minion. The glass I purchased was stove glass Robax or similar. The only time I broke the pyrex in my stoves was when I didn't allow enough room for expansion. Other than that they all worked well. Cheers Gerry

Hi George. I have put wood shavings soaked in oil and it goes like its in a steam engine. Pellets would be the same but provision would need to me made for renewing the fuel automatically and ash removal. I might do something on that before long. Cheers Gerry

Hi James It's 21 Kw total output. 15Kw to the boiler and 6Kw to the room. It's a Stanley Erin. I will be uploading a video where I changed the fire rope seal on the door and talk about the stove a little. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry

Nice Gerry, , did you make the "boiler" portion yourself or did the little stove come with it fitted. I now live in Canada, but am from Scotland and I do remember our old house fireplace had a " Back Boiler " so when the fire was on, we got hot water also : )
Hi Madd Macc. The stove has about 50,000 btu to the water side of things so is powerful enough over time to look after my underfloor heating, hot water and radiator system. Its a great little stove and it comes complete with boiler. The little burner works great in this stove but I am not confident of running waste oil in the house. I can however connect it all up to an outside boiler and connect in to the existing heating system and get all the benefits without the risk. Cheers Gerry

Is the water system a closed loop?
Hi Mark. The heating system is open vented with a 300 llitre indirect hot water storage tank and all fed from a header tank. With it being open vented it cannot build up pressure if the contents boiled. This boiler stove heats my domestic water and underfloor heating. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry
How does the fire not catch in the feed & move up the supply?
Hi Travis. It just doesn't want to do that, you would need the oil line acting like a chimney for the flames to go that direction. The pipe is actually under negative pressure from the stove and there is a little oil trap too because of the way the unit is piped. @@GerrysDiy hi Gerry, mine was connected to a standard old flue liner block Chimney, as the chimney had a lot of tar build up etc from wood/turf/coal burning over many years it caught fire and it was a scary experience for over a hour , the Draw and heat was Shocking, and i was hoping the Stove glass would hold due to heat and DRAW from the burning chimney tar, SCARY!!!!! but I still like you DIY Videos, God Bless.

@@victorvillablanca8668 el humo es totalmente transparente, pq resulta que hay que ajustar el tiro con un a valvula de compensacion suto en el codo de salida. para que pueda succionar aire desde fuera i no desde la camar de combustion, asi no fuerzas tanto la camara y tienes mas tienpo de quemar todo el combustible... el problema real reside en mantener el nivel del liquido para que no se seque o rebalse

Would waste oil that has antifreeze, brake fluid, power steering fluid mixed in still work. Just wondering cause sometimes you never know for sure when someone gives you old waste oil. Thanks Gerry, love your videos. :)

Hi Gerry, why do you think your concept could be so dangerous in a house? The flame would stay in the stove, what is the difference with burning wood in the stove?
Does the problem come from the stove glass that would break due to the to high temperature?
Hi Juh Daille. The stove in this video allows me to control the air input so that if I close off the intake the flame will stop. I can imagine that some people might take chances with their design efforts. The burner I show in the video is very easy to make and runs very well but waste oil can be contaminated with all sorts of things that can cause the flame to run away uncontrollably. I will do another video this week where I will add just water to the fuel and show what happens. You would be surprised. If you were distracted and the oil overflowed from the burn chamber that could be enough to take out a whole house or worse. If someone adds kerosene to a hot burner etc. There are lots of ways to make a cheap heater to go wrong. I have already disconnected the burner from the stove in the video. There are other ways to do this and I will be doing more on that soon. Hope this helps. Be Safe Gerry
Hi Juh. The glass is safe if it is stove glass and it does allow you to see what is happening in the stove which is safer in my opinion. All of my designs to date have glass in them for viewing. If your flue is of sufficient diameter and length there will be no fumes in the living space. you can see in the video that the flame and smoke stay in the stove and go up the flue. If any stove burning coal , wood, gas or oil smokes into the room then there is not sufficient draw on the chimney and that needs to be sorted before burning takes place. It is possible to burn waste oil but my advice is to learn more with a shed stove or just outside and then decide. Cheers Gerry
+Juh Daille - There is NO SAFETY built-in... Like if it gets TOO HOT to a certain Temps or incase something failed. Unattended, Draft Failures, Insurance Policy, Etc.... I think that is pretty easy to understand don't you?

Hi Ziad. This burner has proved very well behaved and predictable. I have used it quite a few of my burner projects and it is happy using 2 litres per hour but if more output is needed you can simply increase the oil flow rate.
