I use this song in my Developmental Psychology class that I teach at college, by having students listen to it and pick out the lyrics that detail the genetic, biological, environmental, family, and personal choice factors that influence how we develop into who we are. It does not matter if students apply the same lyrics to different factors; the point is that we have multiple determinants to our personhood and one of those is free will or choice.
Your description of how Home Free knows what a song needs is exactly on point. They always arrange the harmonies and assign the voices for the best portrayal of the lyrics and mood of the song itself. They leave showing off for their very entertaining live shows -- wish I could see one myself! Home Free is my favorite of all the a cappella groups so popular right now. I love your understanding of what makes them so great. Please keep digging into their vast catalog!
I love Home Free's version of this beautiful song. This is in my top 5 songs by them. They really brought out the emotion of it. Tim's lead is amazing with his deep bass. Also love Rob & Chance's solos plus the great harmonies. And Adam is tasteful in making the simple sound of pounding his chest & thigh. I believe we can change our course in life. We don't have to make the same mistakes as our parents. We can choose to rise above it.
Just went and listened to the original by John Mayer. There is absolutely no comparison. For me (my own opinion) the guys of Home Free are singing head and shoulders above the John Mayer version. That is my feeling about so so many of their covers. They don’t cover a song, the improve and elevate the song.
Great reaction and comments on this cover of such a meaningful song. When I first heard it not long after being introduced to Home Free via reaction channels, I just kept on replaying it time and again (no knowledge of the original back then). Another favourite of mine on the reflective side is "Colder Weather".
No need to apologize for the emotion they evoke with their exceptional vocalization that makes you think instruments and insane harmonies are all happening at times you are not expecting or prepared to encounter as they bring the words alive in way you have never heard before. Their arrangements are sensationally good and they own the presentation in a new way that just wow you!!! They simply take a cover and make it new and make it better every time. ❣ Subscribed Thank you Nick for reacting to this song that simply brings those emotions to the very raw edges of our mental faculties with "LOVE" . 💟
I love how Home Free keeps a lot of their video environments simple--allows the focus to be on their incredible acapella vocals. Their 4-part harmony is already peerless, as far as I'm concerned, but their 5-part harmony is even more impactful❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️
This is one of the most beautiful covers, I love this song. Not only is it a fantastic song by John Mayer, but as is often the case, I like Home Free's version better than the original. I don't know how they do it, but they do it very well. Great reaction!
More often than not, I prefer Home Free's covers to the original version of most songs. They have covered songs that I did not like at all, but like their version of it. I think people feeling that way speaks volumes to their talent. They are just great at every genre they sing, and amazingly with no instruments
One thing you can always trust is Home Free....you'll learn 😊. Their harmonies (to me) are the best in the genre. Such a deep song, & so tastefully done by Home Free.
This is one of my favorites. I didn’t know it when John Mayer did it, only through Home Free. I listened to John’s version and it’s a beautiful song that he wrote but HF’s version spoke to me more. You said it beautifully. They don’t go over the top unless a song warrants it. I Can’t Outrun You, What We Ain’t Got, Die a Happy Man, So Long Dixie. 🥰😍
This is the one that HF became my heroes with. I was in a very dark place for a long time and so isolated. The first time I heard it I sobbed my self into a Migraine. After, I felt 20 yrs lighter and started reaching out and being involved in life again. It just hit me what the real questions were that I had been worrying about and isolating my self from actually were. I can't thank them enough for singing with such clarity with such honesty that it reaches out like "finally someone understands". Mental health traps you because not many will truly listen and are impatient if you can't express your self clearly. This was the bridge I needed. How do I ever Thank them for that? I guess I'll just tell my story.
One of the few where we don’t get too much from Austin. It’s so good just the way it is. Stripped way, way down. “Helplessly Hoping” and “I Can’t Outrun You” are similar in tone.
One of my most favorites! Really love their harmonies! Starting with Tim and Chance and then Rob! And Austin’s great harmony, Adam’s awesome beat to keep it on track!👍👍
My mother was severely mentally ill (with psychosis). This song really speaks to me about my fears of being like her and the ambivalence of my feelings. I loved her, and it wasn't her fault she was sick, but her illness affected the whole family. She passed away a few years ago and I am still working through everything.
Thank you for such an honest, heartfelt reaction. This song is a very heartfelt song and Home Free did an amazing job of conveying that. See you in the next video!
Hi Nick, love your reactions! This is one of my favorites from Home Free. These guys are so individually talented; and then collectively they just click. Their humble and down to earth nature lends itself to the sound. They like Elvis feel the music and it becomes a message from the heart no matter what song they do. I don't know if I mentioned in another reaction but, if you go to TH-cam and pull up The History of Home Free; they have 7 videos that are each about 1/2 hour that tells their story. It tells about where each guy came from and tells about all the people that have been in the group from its inception clear up to where they are today. It's very interesting and funny. They at one time almost gave it up. So glad they didn't. There's no way you can be in a bad mood after listening to these guys. Thanks for what you do! Have a great day!
That's the great thing about HF: they focus on the message of the song and not on how amazing they are, and that makes all the difference! Yes, they can still dazzle us, but there's always a reason that they do so. They are so humble in their craft, it's never about them but about which voice(s) will make the song and it's message come out the best. Take Me Home, Country Roads (th-cam.com/video/UwubhhECksM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UisMfHzAHD1lYydI) is a good example of this. They spent years working on getting that one just right before they were willing to put it out to the world.
Home Free may bring their swag to a song, but will NEVER disrespect the original. They, somehow, will distill the feeling and message of a song, and put it right in your emotional lock-box.
I love this John Mayer cover! This video is so well thought out! Not only are the harmonies fantastic but the fact that they’re filling it in front of a diversion down! Kind of the point of this song do you keep throwing the same way or divert yourself to a new path! Nice reaction! HF Has taken on a few more serious songs… Listen to “what we ain’t got”;… &Everybody walk in this land! There are always questions about how your life will turn out… Can you control your destiny or not?? Very deep subject for Christmas time. Nice reaction! Mark Humphrey never let you down
Oh my goodness. I have 2 young friends, 18 & 20 years old who love country music. WHAT! I've never liked it. But today's country music is not like the old fashioned country music I remember when I was young. Anyway, I listened to this song today, and it breaks your heart. My mother has never been interested in me. Only my brother. She's a narcissist. My father was murdered when I was 7. My brother spent the next 40 yrs in and out of prison. Drugs and whatever. I never wanted their lives. I've always thought, maybe I am more like my father? (traits and personality, not his lifestyle) I have found True love in my friends. Love that I didn't get from my family. Many families took me in as their family. It does break your heart when your mother isn't interested in you. I hate that jealous, competitive, sick love. But, we all have a choice to make, to be like them, or let it wash out in the river and be a better person. I'm so glad you had good parents.
You should check out John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes from fown under "When something is wrong with my baby." And the cover from the Beetles "Help" with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. John is a legend here. He's had No.1 songs in 5 decades. Jimmy Barnes sings an amazing song in his 80s I'm stone cold in love with you with Joe Bonamassa on guitar. Check him out. You guys are missing out big time. We've grown up with John, he can sing any grene. I have heard so many people listening to him for the first time saying he's the best singer in the world.
Great comments! This is one of Humphries best… The creativity of where they film this is amazing!the water in back is a diversion Dam, Which is kind of the message of this song! Do things have to remain the same or can you diverted a different direction!
Great reaction Nick. I believe people can definitely change if the desire is strong enough, which sometimes requires reaching out for help to get there. This song hits home for me because I had 2 alcoholic parents who I eventually lost because of it. Unfortunately my sister and brother followed the same path and I lost them too. I chose to break the cycle and never drink and I am so glad I did. I guess that’s why I appreciate Home Free’s version that sounds hopeful at the end. We all need some hope in our lives. Thank you for requesting this one Lori, it’s one of my favorites by them. ❤️
@@nickforell1 Music is my saving grace; it got me through my tough childhood and it got me through the pandemic as someone who is high risk and was house bound. Home Free’s music speaks to my soul; thank you for reacting them.
Another home run for Home Free. They seriously respect the lyrics and the journey they take you on. The harmonic choices they make support the emotion the words express and help the message flow straight to your heart. They are some of the best story tellers around.
Nick I’ve only found Home Free in the last week and I’ve been blitzing through the Reaction people both to hear some of theirs and see other people’s feelings. You have become my favorite. I enjoy watching you and your comments which don’t last long and interrupt my visualizing. You are good!
Beautifully pared back but that shows it off even more! I love your interpretation of their version Nick. Also……….there’s always room to grow & change as a person but the acceptance of who you are can be a hard but also an ever evolving thing. Go easy on yourself because you have a lot more living & changing to do. 💞
I really loved what you had to say. Very heartfelt! This is one of my favorite songs that Home Free does too. Have watched so many times and never tire of it. Glad it worked for you too. This song hits me deep also. Came from a very dysfunctional family. My son had a hard time wanting to commit in a relationship because he was afraid he would be like his father and grandfather also. I told him they made choices that were wrong. It was not in his genes and he could make the right choices. Which he has and I've been proud of him for that. I am sure you too are making the best choices. Take care!
One of my favorite songs by Home Free! Eight of my twelve grandchildren are adopted and I worry about them as they grow up and become adults. They’re ages 13 to 20 now.
Hiya, sorry for late response. I was worried when your reaction started with the little half smile an eye roll. This song has my hear, he’s for years. Love original in the Home Free cover. Glad it turned around for you. Look forward to more reactions
This is a first for me. I know John Mayer, but never heard this song. However, I am familiar with "Home Free." Took your advice, and listened to John Mayer's song first. Both are thought provoking, and very moving. However, the real star here is you. You are the most intelligent, and intellectual reactor. Thoroughly enjoyed your talk on this piece. Both the song and, your take on it, was moving, and I felt free to shed a tear. Thank you, I will be back.
I love this song…I’ve been a home fry since their sing off days…your reaction really touched me…so much so that I listened to John Mayer’s version…they’re both really good…thank you for reacting to this…oh, and I sub’d because of it!!! ☺️
I think it's Home Free's ability to convey the emotional context of a song that puts them on the next level. Home Free is also ego-free. Regardless if one of them wrote the song (3 of them are song writers) whomsoever fits best is the one who sings it. For example, Austin wrote "Give Me a Sign" and doesn't sing lead on any part of it. I'm glad they did one of your favourite songs justice! Thanks for playing this & your reactions.
You should check out their version of How Great Thou Art. It's absolutely Georgeous. The back drop is not cgi they actually sang it on a mountain in the Swiss alps I believe.
Hi Nick, I'm new to your channel and already love your reactions. And I also love Home free. In the blood was the first one I heard from them and I was hooked. I would so love to watch your reaction to Home Free's version of How great thou art ❤
This, the way it's done here just completely engulfs you. I didn't know this song nor even who JM was.... but I did look it up and gave listen. I find HF fits my ear really really well and they've done that since my first listen (O Holy Night). Be Safe
Adam’s simple body percussion provides the heartbeat that drives this song for me. Honest, thoughtful harmonies that forego the vocal gymnastics, letting the poignancy of the lyrics to resonate. This one always breaks me.
When John Mayer released this song I already loved it. The lyrics are really something to think about. But I think this version has something more. All those different voices at exactly the right time. Adam keeping it simple but perfect for this song. It's on my favorite playlist.
Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole! New subscriber here. If you've already explored Pentatonix and Geoff (VoicePlay too?), then this group brings you up to 3 of the big 4 on TH-cam in acapella. Where Voctave is a larger group without a beatboxer (that you won't even miss), and VoicePlay is a little more theatrical at times, and Pentatonix is more pop with a HUGE audience, Home Free is the next-door neighborly can-do-any-genre comfort food. They are definitely a favorite of many, myself included although I've listened to all of them as well. They are at times the most serious and yet the goofiest and most transparent of the groups. They have an incredible sense of humor and also purpose with a heaping dose of patriotism. A couple of tie-ins for you, given who've you've already reviewed: "Ring of Fire" with Avi Kaplan, "Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget" (a goofy original with an Avi cameo), "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys but arranged by Geoff Castalucci. Their cover of "God Bless the USA" with Lee Greenwood and the US Air Force Band is worth a listen, as is "Butts Remix" for a little more goofy shows off country, rap, and everything in between. And remember, even with 'goofy', they never undersell the performance. Bottom line: Pick anything. It's all good and you can't go wrong. Again, welcome aboard...
Appreciate your reaction! Been watching you for a little while, just subscribed! This also hits home with this Home Fry from a "blended family"... sending love from Maryland~ ❤
Update.... Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci both released their Halloween videos on their Patreons Saturday. They are both absolutely beautiful and amazing.

Wow, thanks you for sharing Denise. It seems like the perfect song for developmental psychology. One of my favorite subjects

Great reaction - this is one of my favorites by HF!

So beautiful to listen to and the message touches your soul.
The talent that is HF is unmatched

This song tugs at your heart.
Home Free, as always, adds to the emotion with their gorgeous harmonies. Great, heartfelt reaction Nick! 😎✌
They certainly tug at the heartstrings
I appreciate your very thoughtful reaction. This song is one of my favorites and Home Free did it justice. ☺
Thank you. I’m so glad you enjoyed Sue
Gets me every time. Thank you for the Home Free reactions.
Another beautiful, emotional song from HF. As you said, they always seem to know exactly the right arrangement for the feeling of the song.
As many Home Fries say, they dont cover, they upgrade. Many times I've "heard" the words more in a HF cover than in original. Nana Karen UK

Right there with you. Thanks.
You bet!
Hiya, sorry for late response. I was worried when your reaction started with the little half smile an eye roll. This song has my hear, he’s for years. Love original in the Home Free cover. Glad it turned around for you. Look forward to more reactions
They just have the knack of taking a song you love and just letting you love it all over again. Enjoy
Love your reactions.
Thank you!! 😊
Thank you Laurie. For this song.
If you want to experience how far afield from country they are capable of, watch them do opera! Nessum Dorma
I know the original, but I find this version more emotional.
You should check out their version of How Great Thou Art. It's absolutely Georgeous. The back drop is not cgi they actually sang it on a mountain in the Swiss alps I believe.
Great reaction ❤ Home Free.
Adam Rupp must have been black and blue after all those chest thumps and leg slaps😂
God sincerely bless you. I really like your philosophy and approach to the reviews.
We can tell that you are a good person. Stand proud!
I appreciate that!
