William Arthur Fenton, Brother, I'm 64 and I shed tears of joy every time I hear it especially this live version by Bobby Hatfield, the song was written for a little known 1955 prison movie by the name of "Unchained" . This is my favorite vocal song of all time I could still listen to it for hours, it makes my heart swell up with love for any girl listening with me 😂🤣😭. Seriously though I absolutely love this version it's the greatest love song of all time, many many times over the years this song clinched the deal between a fine woman and me. It always makes me feel great and from feeling down to instantly soaring. Just had to make a comment about some of the history of " Unchained Melody" as well as how it affects me.

This was my parents song at their wedding in the mid 1980’s. I was there and I remember it clearly. My Dad passed away in 1998. This song always makes me cry. I can’t listen to it in public lol.

@@PsychedelicFerret you should get your history fixed. the song first appeared in 1954-55, 1955 had 4 versions that year by 4 different singers.

Do you know who gave the Righteous Brothers their name they were just starting out in the early 50s and Watts California and they played in place that was pretty much all African American Marines they booed them loudly when they came on stage but by the time they were done they didn't want them to stop singing and they called them a pair of Righteous Brothers and the name stuck just like their music has for all these years. And your reaction priceless, today's music can't hold a candle against it. I can remember my mother playing this when I was a child they were some of her favorite singers.

It was effortless, smooth and sheer perfection. He's the Greatest singer that did it.There is another brother and he was there but at times they both did solos. He was the whole package ❤. The Righteous Brothers were Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley (who sang the deep-deep bass). Blue eyed soul singers from Southern California, and when the black Chicago DJ would play their vinyl, he’d exclaim excitedly “That’s RIGHTEOUS, Brother!!!!”. Only later did people learn they were two skinny blue-eyed boys from SoCal. Thank you for showing your love and interest in this beautiful song. Kzoey, our country needs some love at this time. Thank you and God bless you. And, I’d be remiss if I failed to say you are a beautiful woman with a big heart ❤️ and....I send my love to you from Kansas!

This song takes on more meaning when understood in context...the song comes from a prison movie about a man doing time and singing to his love from prison...In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film (released in 1955).... North then asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics, but Zaret initially declined, saying he was too busy painting his house. North was able to convince him to take the job, and together they wrote "Unchained Melody."...and the rest is history...maybe the most beautifully written romantic song of all time...and as I understand Zaret did eventually get his house painted.

This 1965 song was written and played in the 1955 movie "Unchained," when a prisoner tries to escape after being turned down for parole several times. His friend stops him. His friend also sings the melody wondering if she will wait for him when he get unchained from this special prison without walls in Chino, CA. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield sang in a local bar in Orange, CA when a black Marine from El Toro Base at Irvine CA, shouted out to them; Yeah! "That was righteous, Brothers!" Righteous being slang for cool, great, & good.

Though not the first, generally recognized as the best. His version was used in the movie Ghost. The Righteous Brothers had a solo or two each album. Both wanted to do this song. Bobby Hatfield won the coin toss.

Bobby will always be the best. Jonathan Jackson also sang this song with heartfelt passion. Try listening to him.

As some have already said, This was from a movie originally about someone in prison. I haven't seen it though. I prefer the way I experienced it in the sixties as a soldier in 'Nam singing to his sweetheart.
My friend said it was also done by a do-wop group earlier but it wasn't how this song should be done. Bobby Hatfield did it perfectly and it's known as the best version. One of the best of all times for love songs, slow dance & just all around. Gives me shivers Even at 67. If you watch the movie Ghost, this is what they dance to at the end. *tears * Bill Medley (the other part of the duo with deep voice) wasn't in this one, but you might like "You've lost that lovin feeling" Ebb Tide is nice too.

Elvis Presley did this song for the first time at what turned out his last concert. It's here on TH-cam, look it up Rapid City, SD. My parents were there. Maybe compare them.😉

When women react to this video...they smile...their eyes sparkle...they lick their lips and touch their hair..they tingle ALL OVER... it makes me smile to their reactions. Mr Hatfield at his best , live, on beast mode. Legend!
