In today's video I speak to leading researcher Dr. Shirin Hooshmand at the National Osteoporosis Foundation on prunes and plums for osteoporosis and bone health.
I’d like to start this prune regimen. But I’ve read that acrylamide (formed from high dry heat used to prepare and dry the plums) can be dangerous. Does anyone know of a prune brand with lower acrylamide? Might sun-dried prunes be healthier?
Ok nice about dried prunes but no explanation about how it actually works to reduce osteoporosis and even build bone density. Also dried prunes would have a lot more sugar than fresh prunes so must it be dried prunes? Wish this is answered in this short interview.
I soak chia seeds overnight in yogurt (in an old jam jar). Give it a good stir in the morning and add in a small, chopped banana plus 5 prunes (snipped with scissors). My go to 'bone breakfast' :)

Great! I'm going to pick up some prunes today. I've always liked them. I have Osteopenia and am 74, so hopefully along with Margaret's exercises, my bones will thank me. Thank you for the info.
For GI patients, be aware that prunes are high FODMAP and will get your GI symptoms worse. Check with your doctor. GI issues are very commonly associated with osteoporosis hence the need to double check with your doctor before eating those.
I participated in a research study conducted by Dr. Hooshmand years ago at San Diego State University. I had osteopenia at the time. I was told to eat 5 prunes a day given my fairly small body size. After the study was over, I only continued eating the prunes for a while. Last year I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis and put on Reclast. I'm a lifelong exerciser and 50- year lacto-vegetarian. I just decided to resume eating soaked prunes along with an excellent calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D and K, etc. supplement. If nothing else, prunes are a healthy food, so nothing lost by eating them.

The body is so complex. I have no idea why the osteoporosis returned when I was again diagnosed by an endocrinologist 2 years ago. I'm over 80 and just happy I can function as well as I do, exercising, volunteering, being a pet parent, living a full life. Sorry I can't offer anything more specific.

While I applaud Dr. Hooshmand's efforts to study the effects of dried plum on BMD, there are several limitations that need to be addressed. One is the high risk of bias in all the plum studies. Due to high risk of bias, the certainty of evidence of dried plums on BMD is low. In addition, while Dr. Hooshmand excluded individuals on hormone replacement therapy, she did not exclude individuals who may be regularly involved in weightbearing exercises or on osteoporosis medications, which could have impacted and skewed results. Lastly after one year, the only significant changes in BMD were at the ulna and spine. The spine is mainly composed on trabecular bone and is more metabolically active than cortical bone. Before we can say dried plums are effective at improving BMD, we should really look at meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (not cohort) and the certainty of evidence around this recommendation. In addition, the results on dried plum and fracture risk is still unclear and we know from studies that fractures are an important outcome for people living with osteoporosis and low bone mass.
Agreed. Functional food studies usually suffer from this as these bigger trials require $. I think we need to get big prune involved:). With supervision!
Susan Wallace, how did you manage to heal your fractures? I have two compression fractures right now and the pain is really very bad! I've been having painkillers and physio now for over a month and it feels as though they are never going to heal!

What about if you are a T1D and eat a very low carb diet? I think my blood sugar numbers will soar just eating one. I want to do this but I am scared of what this might do to me.
You encourage the use of a progression to heavier weights. I'm 76 yrs old with osteoporosis. I've lifted weights for over 40 years and feel pretty strong. However, I can't progress beyond 8 pounds because it hurts the joints in my hands and wrists. I also can't put a lot of pressure on the palms of my hands, as in some yoga poses. Any advice for me?
That sounds like me! It's arthritis for me. I started drinking distilled water about 4 mos ago and there is an improvement. It dissolves the calcium deposits in joints. It does not remove calcium from your bones, as some say. You also get your body's minerals from your food. Minerals in hard water collect in you joints because your body cannot dissolve them. Anyway, you might try that. 😊
How can diabetics and those with pre diabetes lower the glycemic load of consuming 6-9 prunes every day? I like soaking my prunes overnight in a little water and lemon juice. They are certainly delicious but I worry about the blood sugar spike, since I generally limit my high carbohydrate sweet foods.
They are also good for iron. If you are on the toilet all day ,it would mean that your body is finally getting the fibre it has been needing...prunes only soften what's there, so it can come out gently:if your diet is low in fibre, start introducing prunes gradually, say just 2, then in crease every couple of days, til you have your 6-9 per day...and if you have osteoperosis, this treatment, along with magnesium, zinc, calcium, k2, is FAR better than the synthetic chemicals (and their side effects!) can offer! Eat prunes and enjoy.🙂

Greetings from Singapore. Chanced upon this video and eager to take prunes for my osteopenia. Bought a pack of prunes and under the ingredients list reads : "pitted prunes (dried plums)" I'm confused whether it's prunes or plums that I've bought. Kindly advise. Thks alot
the label tells it all as does the researcher, a plum that has been dried to preserve it is called a prune so you have bought prunes which are dried plums, exactly as you should.
The drying process creates high levels of elialic acid which is what is anti inflammatory and prevents further break down of the bones. Slows resorption. Plums don’t have this special ingredient. It’s 90 degrees drying heat that pushes up the polyphenols in prunes that are so valuable.

Many people are concerned that prunes contain too much sugar and could increase sugar levels in the blood. While they are relatively high in carbohydrates, research has shown that they do not cause a material rise in blood sugar levels. Prunes have the potential to increase levels of adiponectin, a hormone that plays a role in blood sugar regulation, which in turn keeps a lid on sugar levels. When compared to other fruits, prunes has a lower level of sugar content and a lower Glycemic Index (GL). Please read my post on this topic. I didn't know about the EVOO; since I am whole-food plant based, I try to stay away from added oils, but most likely get enough polyphenols in the variety and vegetables that I eat.
Greetings from Singapore. Chanced upon this video and eager to take prunes for my osteopenia. Bought a pack of prunes and under the ingredients list reads : "pitted prunes (dried plums)"
I'm confused whether it's prunes or plums that I've bought. Kindly advise. Thks alot
"Prunes" is just another name for dried-plums.
the label tells it all as does the researcher, a plum that has been dried to preserve it is called a prune so you have bought prunes which are dried plums, exactly as you should.
Thanks. Your explanation helps alot
What makes prunes better than plums?
The drying process creates high levels of elialic acid which is what is anti inflammatory and prevents further break down of the bones. Slows resorption. Plums don’t have this special ingredient. It’s 90 degrees drying heat that pushes up the polyphenols in prunes that are so valuable.
Why do they have to be dried? I like my prunes stewed.
I believe stewed prunes are dried ....then stewed.
Prunes are dried plums, stewing them just adds back some of the water, so no they don't have to be still dried.
Interesting, but information could have been so much better ! Where is Vitamin D , Vitamin K and magnesium mentioned ?

Yes, I love prunes!
Isn't that a lot of sugar?
Hi Julie. I break down the nutrient detail in my blog post. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-nutrition/prunes-for-osteoporosis/
You would never leave the toilet, eating 9 to 10 prunes a day. Lol. 🤣
I ate five this afternoon and it sent me to the bathroom after a couple of hours and my stomach feels bloated in the evening. Not advisable!
What an opportunity to perform sit to stand exercises!!
I eat 6 daily. No problems.
Thankyou👍❤️
You’re welcome 😊
I eat them every day. Love them. Great for your bowels as well.
Is the glucose dose of 8 prunes daily not too high and unhealthy ?
Dried prunes? Or fresh prunes?
Fresh plums become dried prunes.
Can you imagine 10 prunes a day , what about sugar ??????
Much better is to soak egg shells in lemon juice over night and drink the liquid in the morning. Remedy from Rika Zarai who has cancer in 80s
9-10 plums a day would definitely keep me regular but I don't want to be THAT regular.
Thank you ! Will prune j . ok
Usually dried prunes has load of chemicals to presumptive.
So I should buy organic dried prunes?
I would love to start this regimen, as I can’t take osteoporosis medications.
I’m just afraid of acrylamide sin prunes. Can you tell me how much acrylamide in one prune?
I’ve learned people shouldn’t take in more than 117 mg daily. Thank you!
Pity prunes are preserved with seed oils!
Prevod pozdrav.
Prunes have sugar. Alot of sugar is not good for the body
Ok going to eat my prunes ;-)
Prunes are loaded with sugar, aren’t they?
Many people are concerned that prunes contain too much sugar and could increase sugar levels in the blood. While they are relatively high in carbohydrates, research has shown that they do not cause a material rise in blood sugar levels. Prunes have the potential to increase levels of adiponectin, a hormone that plays a role in blood sugar regulation, which in turn keeps a lid on sugar levels.
When compared to other fruits, prunes has a lower level of sugar content and a lower Glycemic Index (GL).
Please read my post on this topic. Thanks. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-nutrition/prunes-for-osteoporosis/
Prune juice is supposed to be good but personally don't like it
100gms of prunes is 60 carbohydrate grams, my total daily carb/sugar intake. Eeek!
absolutely true. It will give a glucose spike that will trigger a major insulin spike. Don't do it!!
😅
And,awesome prunes for iron, fiber and 💩 pooping!; Gram made us eat them!
9 is a lot of prunes
