    Your little helper keeps getting bigger and more articulate. The camper is coming along nicely.

    Watching you build the side walls reminded me of making balsa wood planes as a kid only on a smaller scale than your project.

      I used to build those balsa wood planes when I was a kid too! I'd like to think I'm doing a little better job of it now, lol!

    You wear many hats, and mine is off to you!
    Those fender's were beautiful, usually the older had more steel but in your case you built a solid set!. Mine had been destroyed by tire failure and repaired, and this is why I only use a fine grade of "Trailer Tire" and not car tires which someone had put on!
    I know what kind of a job it is to source material, trying to find a replacement isn't as easy as you make it look! I musta tried a dozen places, and many leads looking for 1/8 bendable Birch, but I won and at a decent price 6 yrs. ago. I'm also betting it will take your desired finish...
    It was nice to see your help showed up on time! Sometimes child labor isn't that dependable but hey they work for food!

      Lol, thanks! You know actually aside from when I work in the sun I almost never wear hats!

    The new wood is often referred to as luan. It was used as ceiling material for every Scotty I have ever worked on. It takes stain really well. And it is cheap! Your build is looking great.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, my father-in-law calls all cheap plywood Luan, but I understand that's actually a specific type of SE Asian plywood, so that would make sense for this stuff. I'm going to try to stain some up soon and see what I think, but it looks surprisingly nice to me for how cheap it is.

    Holy mosquito coil, that is a lot of clamps! Also chuckled at the "contain a blowout" comment

      Lol. I actually thought about buying about three times as many clamps, but I don't know when I'll need to use that many again. Maybe if I decide to build a canoe?

    I wish I lived closer to you lol. I would love to sit down and ask you a few questions. I’m redoing a Shasta compact but my curved strips are only 3/4” wide and I tried the luan but it wouldn’t make the curve. I was told to soak my strips in water them bend them?? Have you ever done that??

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't soak your strips, especially if you're using any sort of plywood as you could potentially loosen the glue holding the laminations together. If you're using solid wood, you can make a simple steam bending apparatus that might help you, but I've really never had much trouble bending wood. You also might want to adjust the length of the pieces you're trying to bend, and change where the ends are with respect to the curve you're trying to make. In many cases it's better to end a piece in a tight curve than it is to place the curve in the middle of a strip.

    Curious what part of Kansas you are in. I’m in Warsaw, Mo. I bought a vintage camper West of Manhattan, Ks. years ago. Falling apart & too old to do the work. Born & raised around Hutchinson.

    So how did the finish turn out on the utility panel?

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm still sort of deciding. The nicer side of the panel looks bad, too dark, odd color, but the rougher side looks okay, it's got some knot holes though that'll need to be addressed.

      You're welcome! I know Rob the Rebuilder used amber shellac on utility panels and it looks pretty good once it's all together, just don't expect an exact match to your birch walls.
