I think that's the biggest irony about doing speedruns. The end result is incredibly fast, much faster than any average player. However, the time it takes to improve and reach this point takes months or years XD
What the hell am I doing? I just finished watching/listening to a 2 hour video about stuff I don't even understand... :) I mean I never even finished Quake on any difficulty. I just laughed when Muty mentioned beginners, and I thought he must be talking about guys like the ones beat the crap out of me 24 years ago in a LAN party... Anyway, I enjoyed it, like all your videos, Connor. Thanks! And as a Hungarian it's just good to see and to hear about Joe and Péter.
Finally finished. Absolutely loved every second of this video. Please do something similar for the 100% version and nightmare version if those exist? :) pleeeeeease
Lovely video. Watching you all learn things and teach the wider audience things that are so subtle at first but it’s fun to be able to notice it with the slowdown and back and forth. I hope we get some more like this in the future
I‘m sooo impressed on your level of gaming. Stupid question: sometimes you demonstrate jumps and moves in slomo. Is this also a stretegie to learn how to play the levels? Are you playing in slomo - and then after hours and hours you try it in realtime speed?
Sometimes we test certain tricks in slow-motion to see if they are theoretically possible. But in general I don't think many players 'practice' like that. Using savestates for each part is a more common approach...
Such a wealth of knowledge being shared and discussed, makes me wanna pick it backup again. Really exciting to see the game still growing decades later
14:00 I was always wondering how you guys make the zombie cooperate. I only play Q1 casually, but I attempted some of the shortcut tricks from your runs. Up to 10 seconds, huh? I was happy to walk the stubborn undead to the portal under 1 minute as it usually takes me 2.
I know that the playstation 4 is the worst version for speedrunning. But i love trying your tricks. I‘m pretty happy with my 21:12 second on e1m7… you make in 11ish… but its fun to rocketjump over chton :-)
Any chance of commentary on the Scourge Done Slick? I remember that one being highly entertaining. Perhaps the people involved would be hard to reach now though.
I mean... Brainfluid saved in one level more time than most over several combined, you just need to get him to do more runs and it will break the minute barrier easilly
I've always wondered with these community projects - how do you approach each level when the things you can do depend on how the previous level was played? Like if one level requires a grenade jump and the previous level run ends in too little health. Is each level played sequentially to the point where no further plausible optimization can take place and then you move on to the next?
Certain tricks only work by manually lowering the game's framerate. There is a LOT to cover and I'm planning a video about FPS tricks soon :) The two basic categories are 'Runs' (i.e. any%) and 100%, which are both done on easy and nightmare skill.
Maybe we will update it some day! Quake Done Quickest was the last nightmare project, all the way back in 2011: speeddemosarchive.com/quake/qdq/movies/qdqst.html
Yes, sorry, this was a concern of mine. We all have very different accents and it's sometimes hard to hear with the discord-audio. Hopefully the other videos are easier to follow :)
@@quakespeedrunsexplained I've faced this issue with recording podcasts remotely. The solution we came up with - you get everyone to record their audio on their end, send it to you, then you sync them all into 1 file. It's amazing how well it works!
There are several advantages to recording the audio separately (beyond just removing the discord problems) if you're able to put time in to the audio edit. It lets the editor control levels better, apply different filtering and noise reduction to each voice to aid clarity, and when people are talking at the same time you can also remove anything that's not appropriate to the current context or reorder the conversation to get everyone's viewpoint clearly and still keep the conversational feel. If planning on doing this it's a good idea to not have the discord overlay on the video and better to get everyone to do a "Hi, I'm..." intro at the start. I appreciate, from personal experience, that it can add a lot of time and mental effort but the results can be very professional and better expose the expertise on display by each of the commentators as well as allow auto titling to have a fair chance at helping those to which such is useful. This is not intended as a criticism or detraction from this video as it stands. This video is an amazing insight in to the work, time, and skill put in to these speed runs (as are all of QSE's videos).
Omg. Just yesterday I 100% completed your channel and now a 2.5 hour video is out? Im in heaven!!
Yeah, this guy deserves more subscribers

What a gift! Thank you. This is going onto the watch later favourites.

Probably one of the shortest 2+ hours I've ever spent on YT. Thanks to everyone for making this commentary.
Amazing hearing all the comments and thoughts from the players! loved it thanks for making this.
Thx, very nice, great format! I wouldn't mind if you guys did this more often 😀
Thanks for putting this up!
Thanks Muty for the explanation of how this all works at E3M6
Only 4 minutes in, and I can already tell this'll be good. What names you gathered there holy shit!
It was a huge pleasure to watch this. Thank you.

Awesome video, awesome commentary and, of course, awesome run!

Massively elite videos capture the pure essence.
Awesome commentary!

Do you plan to ever do a similar thing about the 100% QDQ too?
SPEED DEMON
This is unreal ;)

Muty gives a good explanation of this at 1:31:31 :)
Just curious, in the various guys demos, are they freehand doing the rocket jumps, or running a script in the config file?
All freehand - movement scripts aren't allowed in Quake speedrunning
Can anybody explain the fps water trick they are talking about on e4m1 please. Thank you in advance. 1:38:00

What is fps trick/bug? Maybe it could be also useful to explain the categories of quake speed running? Cheers😎

The slomos made me nauseous pretty quickly for some reason. Had to start listening to it like a podcast.
Do you think it's possible to get the whole game under 10 minutes?
Not unless we discover something BIG. With current strats and techniques there is only a theoretical couple of seconds to save off of this run.
Chambers sounds Liverpudlian.
Cool video guys. Whos config was this? Speedrunning config doesnt equal good video config.
Chambers was controlling in-game. It looks like a pretty similar config to my own... What did you think we should adjust?
Well for starters, turn shadows and fullbright skins off.
Seems interesting, but its too hard to listen (understand) for non-native-english viewers…😢

Hahah great catch! He sneaked it in there smoothly.
