Man I thought exactly the same thing!! The DW rack Tom’s had a ton of resonance and sustain, while the Yamaha and Ludwig’s had a little less. The floor Tom’s all sounded similar and great to me, but the Yamaha kick was insane.
Ludwig all the way! I used to have a Keystone X and wish I wouldn’t hadn’t gotten rid of it!😩😩😩 But the Ludwig embodies everything that oak drums should be. Deep and dark with a quick decay. For the most part, the toms sounded the same on all 3 kits. But when it came to the floor tom and bass drum, you could really hear the presence of the oak!
I endorsed Yamaha drums for years and owned the very first Yamaha Live Custom Oak (predecessors to Yamaha Hybrids) and loved mine. Tho this day, it was the best sounding kick I’ve here heard.
As someone who plays DW, Remo heads, and Sabian cymbals, I can tell you that you can't go wrong with that combo. All of these kits sound great. I think the Ludwig bass drum sounds the way you guys described because it's a 22x16 as compared to the other two which were 22x18. It had more punch. The shell depth really matters for bass drums and floor toms. If the DW kit had a 22x16 kick, it would be perfect. Great video!
I play a Yamaha Live Custom kit and have compliments from sound techs and other drummers in our audience. 22x14, 20x16, 10x7, 12x8, 14x15, 16x15, and 14x5.5
Not surprisingly, the Yamaha kit has a little extra "grease" in terms of resonance and depth, plus a bit of added attack. My favorite here, followed by Ludwig.
@@rippindrummer666 I agree with you on the price, and I thought I was going to like the Ludwig kit the best, but this DW kit just sounded and looked so good to me. The Ludwig kit certainly a terrific value and definitely sounded good as well.
I am really digging those Ludwig Oaks lately! Best tom mounts.. Played one live other weekend, that kick shook the house, yet still had decent control- not a lot the sound guy needed to do- And who does not love the Ludwig logo and the history behind it! I play all the brands, so I have no biases.
For me, Yamaha caught my ear the most - then the Ludwig (Loogvig) and then the DW came in third. But, all were pretty much in the same neighborhood overall. Nice sets!! (and, I agree on the 18 Evolution crash - those are hard to beat!!). Thanks, as always, for a great video!!
In my ears the toms on dw sounded best. they have that "pre Eq'd" sound as if you put an dip at 300-500 Hz at them, which I like. Plus they were the most resonant of the 3 kits (maybe it's the tuning tho). I really liked the bassdrum of ludwig, just the toms sounded a bit more choked in a way. The yamaha is great too, but not type when it comes to looks. The dw finish is beautiful. I can see why it's that expensive. great video again :)
I agreed with the guys assessment on the sounds of each. But good lord that Yamaha bass drum was PHAT! Dw was a bit too resonant but sounded lovely. Yamaha was my favorite, and I the Ludwig’s were as they said, a great middle ground
I have the Classic Oak Ludwigs and it is the best sounding kit I ever played, and with very little tuning and muffling. These sound great right out of the box it doesn't take much to dial them in perfect. I have countless videos of them on my page and they bring a smile to my face every time I hear them. They are thunderous, I also use a Classic Oak snare for the recordings. First wood snare I ever had, and I love it. When I play live shows I do switch it out for a hammered Supraphonic, but I vote Ludwig all the way!
Not sure if I am recalling your other videos correctly but I feel your mix is a bit roomier this time, which I like, you get a bit more of an accurate representation of being "in the room" as opposed to mainly close mics. Either way, can't wait for your next vid!
Such a great video. All kits sounded great, but mad props (do people still say that?) to Yamaha for their oak kit finishes. If I remember, when you guys reviewed the Yamaha kit years back, you had mentioned that those weights made it a heavy sumbitch. Those cymbals aren't anything to sneeze at, either. Well done, everyone.
Thanks guys. The Yamaha Bass drum is projecting a massive sound. The Yamaha kit seems to drop off rapidly after the strike. Oddly I prefer the Ludwig kit sound. I don't usually like Ludwig sound so that surprised me. Thanks for the surprising video ey.
I’m telling you….!! I absolutely luv you guys Been playing almost 30 years and yall are just funny and real. Live in NC but if I were there, I’d definitely be buying different sets from you.!!! Keep up the good and enjoyable work that y’all post
Yamaha kit sounds perfect. The others sound good too. DW are twice the price of the Yamaha which is insane to me. That makes the Yamaha a no brainer. My pick for looks and sound is the Yamaha kit.
man music shops have really died here in NZ.. I was looking for an Oak kit.. but impossible to bring in .. great you guys still have the market you can do what you can do..
I play Ludwig exclusively, but Yamaha has always turned my head. Its like there my mistress trying to pull me in. I love Yamaha drums, I just can't cheat on Ludwig.
I have the Yam live custom, great kit, but i have to say the DW sounded the best in this video, full sustain, deep sound and huge bottom. Ludwig is a beauty but the sound is to control for my taste, great video as always.
I have owned a couple dw maple kits both collectors editions I owned a Gretchen maple kit but after going to Yamaha live oak I’m never going back to maple love it absolutely the biggest and deepest tones from a drum I have heard
There isn't a loser in this comparison, all of the sets sound great. However, considering what I'm hearing on my mediocre laptop speakers, and going off my half-assed opinion based on an impulsive gut feeling, I rank them in the following order. 1) Yamaha 2) Ludwig 3) DW
DW>Ludwig>Yamaha. All great kits, but DW has something really special going on in the last several years. I used to dislike DW, but they’ve really come into their own.
Tony, why there are slight differrences in your tuning pitches... from the Ludwig black oyster comparisons to the Gretsch comparison and even in the Sq2 comparison? I appreciate that you put the pitches or notes on the description. I hope you'll answer thanks a lot!!!
the Yamaha and ludwig toms sounded a little dead compared to the DW. would you please make a video on how you tune the drums? You get an excellent sound without muffling at all.
I have a set of Yamaha Stage Customs with a black oak wrap, love them, but I have always dreamed of owning a DW kit. Now that I have heard those Live Custom Hybrids, I am torn. SICK sounding setup!!
They all sounded great, would maybe rethink my thoughts on oak! Yamaha sounded much better than I expected. wow, they were great and hats off to your sound guy as well! I live in Canada but can I come and work for you? I may be late a few times but I will try real hard!1
Regardless of sound, those Yamaha certainly look the best. What a sweet color for a drum set! I like Ludwig drums but they always go for a "classic" color scheme and rarely deviate from it. And for DW an Eb note for the floor tom? Seems like they would adjust something in the manufacturing process, length of the drum etc. to come up with a neutral note one not sharp (of flat).
They all sound great... that would be a difficult decision, which I don't have to make 🙂 I'll just beat on my Recording Customs for now. I did really like the sound of the Yamaha kit but I love the finish on the Ludwig set.... another video...well done!!!
Ludwig killed both kits!!!! Crazy!!! I don’t ppl listening to this on but on my barefoots those Ludwig was clear winners. I would love to buy that if i buy another kit.
Yamaha definitely, all of it. DW had some nice depth and for some reason liked the kick on the Ludwig but toms sound lifeless to me. I play TAMAs so giving unbiased opinion on these.
I'm in Vietnam, I'm just an amateur drummer, I'm still poor so I had to save for a long time to have enough money to buy a 5-drum DW drum set, considering both price + sound quality + durability, Please advise me whether I should buy the dw design kit (made in Taiwan) or buy the dw performance kit made in the US? Looking forward to your reply as soon as possible, thank you very much
DW for the win if this were to be a competition, but, Yamaha Kick, ufffff....was kind of expecting more from the Ludwig drums but was quite disappointed, although the Ludwig snare was quite appealing. I'm the proud owner of a DW Collectors Series in Pure Cherry and these drums are off the charts. Btw DCP, I know not a lot of companies produce Cherry drums but, it would be great if U can do a comparison as well and let the world know about this woods sonic properties.
Very nice video. The Yamaha sounds much better than the DW and Ludwig. I prefer my Noble & Cooley maple set even better. Yes, more $ but I saved and saved and saved to move up from my 1985 Yamaha set. I use Evans hydraulic drumheads which to me are better in all ways over any other drumhead.
It's called dark sound DW - most darker Yamaha - most brighter Ludvig - medium In solo plaing darker sound are alwais better. And for calm music, like jazz. But in metal, dark sound will be eaten by guitars. Then DW are perfect for jazz Yamaha perfect for metal Ludvig are more versitile
AND DANG!!!!! That Yamaha kick drum THUMPS!!!! Can I just have that bass, the toms from the DW and the Ludwig snare????
Man I thought exactly the same thing!! The DW rack Tom’s had a ton of resonance and sustain, while the Yamaha and Ludwig’s had a little less. The floor Tom’s all sounded similar and great to me, but the Yamaha kick was insane.
I go for the LUDWIGS.
Yamaha for me. although I guess I am kind of biased as I play Yamaha anyway.
Personal I love the Ludwig classic oak.
I am currently using a Keystone X pro beat kit with a Black Beauty and it just has it’s on character.
That Yamaha just sings..... Love these videos. Always a great production.
Ludwig all the way! I used to have a Keystone X and wish I wouldn’t hadn’t gotten rid of it!😩😩😩

@@glengamble526 any key differences between the original Live Custom’s and newer Hybrid’s?
That green looks even better in this video than the Facebook post!

The DW kit stole the show in sound and finish. Cymbal selection really compliment the sound of all three kits. Thanks for another great video, guys.
Idk if it worth double the price of the other 2 for it tho
@@rippindrummer666 I agree with you on the price, and I thought I was going to like the Ludwig kit the best, but this DW kit just sounded and looked so good to me. The Ludwig kit certainly a terrific value and definitely sounded good as well.

Oak, in my opinion has the most distinctive tone from all the other woods used for drums. I love it sooooooo much.

Dw stood out to me. Such a full rounded sound with plenty of bottom end
DW Snare, Yamaha Kick and Ludwig Toms. Can't go wrong!
DW makes the best wood snare drums period.
Listening on my home stereo with my sub on, that dw floor tom shook my wall the other 2 did not. Bravo to dw oak, great video as always.
Excellent video as usual! The production is top notch. Thank you DCP!
thanks for watching!

Yamaha all day! Least hardware, best hardware, greatest finish, best sound!
Another professionally done video from DCP. Great job Men!
Great sounding kits and awesome comparison guys. I marginally preferred the Yamaha, I play Sonor/Paiste myself.
Omg, DW wins by far!! Such a beautiful, warm, round and just great Sound! I need one of those...!! ❤
All the “full” mixes sound amazing! 😃👉🏼🥁
Glad you like them!

Yup, I’m working on getting more room in my mixes. Glad you dig it!
@tinterlande make drums sound natural again! 😉🇦🇺
They all sound great. The Ludwig has the slight edge for me, but really, they're all awesome!
Lovin these Classic Oak drums. 💚
Yamaha, no doubt. And those Sabian cymbals simply amazing, love that beautiful hihat
Such a great video. All kits sounded great, but mad props (do people still say that?) to Yamaha for their oak kit finishes. Awesome videos! My pick would be the yamaha!
hell yeah I suggested an oak shoot out, yamaha has consistently knocked oak drums out of the park. I'll always love the original oak customs
Awesome video!!! D W DEFINITELY!!!
All excellent kits. Personally a fan of the Yamaha. The kick has the perfect sound to my ears. Thanks for all your hard work putting this together.
Thanks for watching!
I gotta say the Yamaha live custom oak is my favorite! Do they make these with a 10x8 and 12x9 rack? 22x16 kick? The 16x15 is perfect.
They all sound great, the Yamaha was my preference, but I'd have any of them if I could
Yamaha all the way. The great Steve Gadd can't be wrong.
Got to get me a Ludwig classic oak to complete my Ludwig collection
Thanks guys. The Yamaha Bass drum is projecting a massive sound. The Yamaha kit seems to drop off rapidly after the strike. Oddly I prefer the Ludwig kit sound. I don't usually like Ludwig sound so that surprised me. Thanks for the surprising video ey.

dw and yamaha both amazing. id like to lean dw but yamaha just tugging at my heart strings
And as usual, I will take the Ludwig’s 🥁 Great video guys!
Thanks again for all of these videos, guys. The quality is top notch. And yes I'm subscribed
Look guys... I've got work to do. I'm really busy and I have no time to be watchi... Oh my Goodness! Those are some nice drums.
Thank you. 👍😁
Thank you for allowing us longer time with the "Room Mics". Need WAY more Room Mics.
My vote goes to the DW
Yamaha kit sounds perfect. The others sound good too. DW are twice the price of the Yamaha which is insane to me. That makes the Yamaha a no brainer. My pick for looks and sound is the Yamaha kit.
Ludwig takes this one for sure. It’s the kick drum that won me over. My goodness, it has such a beefy beautiful low end punch.
I have a mid-2000s Yamaha Oak Custom kit (Made in Japan). You can't beat these drums for playing live. Projection, tone, and they stay in tune.
Great review! Exactly what we want from a drum review!!!!! Good work
man music shops have really died here in NZ.. I was looking for an Oak kit.. but impossible to bring in
.. great you guys still have the market you can do what you can do..
I’ve been blessed to be in the Yamaha Family for just over a year now. The Live Oak Hybrid is the best kit I’ve ever owned.

The Yamaha did it for me by a lot.
I'm not usually a fan of the visuals of Ludwig drums, but those dark green shells are damn sexy. Really damn sexy!
To me it seems like the DW has the warmest tone, the Ludwig is the punchiest, and the yamaha is a mixture between the two.
I want the Ludwig
Love Oak! Still playing my original Yamaha Oak Customs...but really enjoy the projection of the new Yamaha Hybrid Oaks.
Ludwig snare and bass. Yamaha rack toms and dw floor tom. Honestly all around I think I like the dw, and I never like the dw! lol
That Yamaha Snare on room mics immediately reminds me of Bonham lol
DW>Ludwig>Yamaha.
All great kits, but DW has something really special going on in the last several years. I used to dislike DW, but they’ve really come into their own.
That Yamaha kick is killer
Tony, why there are slight differrences in your tuning pitches... from the Ludwig black oyster comparisons to the Gretsch comparison and even in the Sq2 comparison?
I appreciate that you put the pitches or notes on the description. I hope you'll answer thanks a lot!!!
All three kits sound great however the real winners are the Sabian HHX Evolution Crash and the Todd Sucherman Ride Cymbal.
the Yamaha and ludwig toms sounded a little dead compared to the DW. would you please make a video on how you tune the drums? You get an excellent sound without muffling at all.
Well done!
All the drum kits sound great! I like DW and Yamaha! Guys what’s the relationship between the top head and bottom head on the toms? ❤❤❤
Well a Though one but I'd go Yamaha bass drum, DW's air toms, Ludwig Floor and Yamaha Snare!
I think I like the Ludwig is the best, but really there is an insignificant difference between them all I find
I have a set of Yamaha Stage Customs with a black oak wrap, love them, but I have always dreamed of owning a DW kit. Now that I have heard those Live Custom Hybrids, I am torn. SICK sounding setup!!
I had a Yamaha Maple custom. Women loved dancing in front of that kit because they good feel it. Thicker heavier shells do that. Pretty cool.
Love the Yamahas. 💪🏻

Love your videos. Not a fan of constant background music during the verbal explanations. Love DCP always though!
Noted. Thanks for the feedback!
YOU ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST HANDS DOWN THOUGH DON'T GET ME WRONG. MUCH LOVE. And I love my original Oak Customs the best btw.

Yamaha overall best sounding kit to my ears.
Yamaha sounds the best to my ears. That said, I'll save my money for lessons and/or cymbals!!!
How much do those things weigh?
Sounds really good!👍🏻
Drum television! No joke. Love the videos!
