yes, you definatly need to shake it, BUT you should always shake all toners while they are still IN the box, that way if it were damaged by UPS or the likes of delivery companies may have damaged it, the toner won't spill.

If the machine truly belonged to the couple then no problem. However if they were leaseing the machine then you will have a problem.
