Sea level rise is so much more than melting ice

  • While researching climate change, we heard something confusing: the sea level in New York City is rising about one and a half times faster than the global average. We couldn’t figure out what that meant. Isn’t the sea level...flat? So we called up an expert, Dr. Andrea Dutton, and went down the rabbit hole. And, we did our best to visualize her truly bizarre answers with animations, dioramas, and a lot of melting ice.

      Mr PumperKnuckles I live in San Francisco, and we haven’t seen one iota of sea level rise in the 50+ years that I have been here in the Bay Area. So it’s all bologna! Proof that the sea should rise the same everywhere, is that when a tsunami hits, the level of water out in the ocean is the same. The only way it changes in height, is by the amount of water being funneled into a bay or cove is of such a massive amount with a lot of power behind it to push it up the walls of a cove. But when there is no massive amount of water, with no power behind it, and only a minimal amount, then the rise of the sea level will not affect coasts much. Dare I say, imperceptibly. Think about trying to measure something that has so many variables to it like the oceans. It’s impossible to say, that they can measure a millimeter of sea level change and attribute it to manmade climate change. So just look with common sense and it’s easy to see that this is a more nefarious plot to force socialism on the free world. Proof: look at Greta, et al. Do they ever condemn China or India? Is she going there? Nope! Does she even condemn them from afar? Nope! You gotta ask yourself: Why is that? The answer is obvious.

If those beaches get pulled back into the sea don't give me any rising sea level BS as an excuse. Sandy Hook at one point in the 70's was about to be an Island but they really built up the sand between parking lot B and C, that strip of land was rapidly declining until they expanded it. If it returns to how it naturally was you can't blame global warming/sea levels for it.

The moon's surface area is about 14.6 million square miles, which is less than the total surface area of the continent of Asia (17.2 million square miles). He melted the entire thing and the water did not rise. He concluded that the reason the level of the ocean is rising is because in other places its declining. For example its estimated that an entire piece of land will appear near rio. But if you tell this to someone, they will automatically assume ur crazy and wont do research (im not saying that the ice cube method is a fact, like the heating globe, its a model, a different outlook on things). Science went from people seeing something and creating models to answer what they saw, and then others questioning the model, to automatically assuming science is always right (any scientist will tell you that thats no the case)

    The even scarier component: The gulf stream is bringing a lot of the natural warmth to the northern Atlantic, where it influences the mild weather patterns that are then transported to Europe by the atmospherical jetstream. In the past when ice ages hit Europe, a slowing of the gulf stream was one of the most likely reasons.

    • @DBT1007
      @DBT1007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      and it's even more scarier. the melting ice will reveals some dark sand or dark particle inside that ice. and it will make things more worse because dark colour absorbs heat more than the light color.
      and those dark sand or particles are also come from the ocean waves. if the sea rising, that means those dark particle can also reach more further.
      Soo this is like.. we can't go back when the ice melts.
      Soo i kinda pessimistic about this man-made global warming. With all this condition, seems like we not gonna make it better :"(
      Unless if we, human, work together as a one community to change the climate change. The key is.. reduce the global human population growth rate. especially for India and some countries in Africa.

      @Kay Kay yeah interglacial period is natural thing. BUT THE CURRENT CONDITION IS A PURE MAN-MADE GLOBAL WARMING.
      Yeah we can only slow it down. That's what we want to do for now!
      and btw, we can make it stable tho. with the population control and less consumption. the warming and the cooling climate is happening because there are no population control back then and until now.
      some animals or plants are thriving too much.
      example, back in the past, some ancient plants are abundant because there are less predator. it makes the increase of oxygen in the atmosphere and the decrease of carbondioxide in the atmosphere because plants absorbs them. and this causes the global cooling era.
      and because there are more oxygen than the carbondioxide, many of those plants are dying slowly. and those ancient dead forest become the carbon storage. and after millions of year, it turn into coal deposit. and now we digging it. it releases the carbon into the atmosphere again. it will make the earth become the earth in the ancient times if we overexploit the nature and keep breeding like crazy.
      the point is, if we can control the population and keep the earth's condition stable, we can stop the global warming and global cooling. not only slow it down.

      Actually if you read my comment carefully you'll see that wasn't my argument. You are correct in saying that the water will expand when heated though, but I think that the expansion due to heating is likely to be negligible as when heated from room temperature to boiling point it only expands by about 4% and projected temperature increases in the ocean are drastically smaller than that difference.
      My point was that the main contribution to any sea level rise is going to come from melting land ice; which we see in the northern hemisphere in places like Greenland. I wasn't saying that melting ice won't contribute at all.

    It is such a complex problem. Which shows more and more that we need to do something now. We don't know what the effects of this is going to be. For example we don't know all the effects of the Atlantic Ocean conveyer belt slowing to a halt. We saw a couple in the video but what about sea life? What about weather patterns? These are serious issues that most in power don't take serious.
    Overall amazing videos that brings on many more questions about what is happening and their future effects.

    Nice work, Team Verge! I like how you explain the sea level rise, New York sinking scenario with simple objects.
    So is New York City facing being flooded? I remember an article in Discover magazine about hypothetically building a keep-the-ocean-out wall around the entire city! That would be a massive project.

    • @kirklaird8345
      @kirklaird8345 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sea levels in New York have been rising at a rate of just over 1" per decade since the mid 1800s. James Hansen, head of NASA at the time, said in 1989 that a nearby highway on Manhattan Island would be underwater within 30 years due to global warming. That would require about 8-10' of sea level rise. Thirty years after his prediction sea level at New York has risen a little over 3". Hansen's prediction was incredibly wrong. Since then the journalist of the prediction (Salon magazine writer) has quibbled and said that Hansen included some caveats that the journalist did not include in the article. Must have been some HUGE caveats. LOL

    The ice floats on the water because it is less dense. So when a 1 cubic meter ice sheet melts in the ocean the melted water takes less than 1 cubic meter. Therefore after the melt the overall water level is less. Again the water is denser therefore needs less space than ice.

      Actually there will be less water. Water expands when it freezes therefore making it less dense and allowing it to float. If it did not do this most organisms in the ocean would perish as it froze solid. Also if it wasn't for global warming New York City would still be under 1000 feet of glacial ice.

    Oceans are constantly rising since the end of Ice Age. They rise at ever decreasing rate. Now it is barely noticable. Expansion of water through the rise of temperature is a myth. Only the upper layer of the water is warming, maybe 10 feet or so. Not much rise such a thin layer can generate through expansion.

    Where I live in southern Australia there are two small islands next to the headland. The island closest to the headland is called Middle Island and is a fairy penguin coloney. In 1974, at low tide, you could walk out to the island at low tide. In 2019, you can still walk out at low tide. The foxes do and so now there is a fence to stop them and guard dogs, made famous in the 2013 film, Odd Ball. No sea lea rise other than the tides.

    I decided to go back in time to the last time ice covered much of North America and other parts of the world. WOW! Our climate is absolutely mild compared to what has occurred at various points in time over the last 15000 years. Just imagine the violent and dramatic change in climate in a very short time it took to wipe out the large animals (mammoths, saber toothed tigers, mastodons, and many others). I can only imagine the impact of oceans rising 400 feet and the wild temperature swings that led to the little ice age and medieval warm period in a short time span. The historic climate changes in Greenland and Iceland make for interesting read. One thing seems to be evident. People fared much better in warm climates than cold ones. Much more to learn.
