      @@todddavis3724 That will depend on the driver. I can't help much at Whiteland but at NCMP, the boys run a 21 driver and 70 to 75 sprockets depending on the layout. I run a 22 and 73 to 78. Ratios regardless of the driver will range from 3.2 to 3.7. Just guessing but Whiteland will likely range higher with the smaller track.

    0:50 If you're basing the kart age by the chassis tag, that's actually the homologation year, not the build year necessarily. If the chassis tag says "blahblah 08", 08 is the last year that chassis is legal for competition at regulated CIK events. The next was 14 and then I believe 20 was after that. It's not really that important as condition matters far more than age for the same homologation year/design, but just thought I'd point it out as most people misunderstand it.

    Took a different road . 3 years of indoor at a really good track. Did A+D starting 08. Got as to work at track Mid 2011. So that's when I really got to see the 206 in action. The track put a kart together for me and did a race so gave me a better idea of what the drivers doing. Still more stressful trackside on lap 1 than it it behind the wheel! After management change bought my own kart! Being a double A+D champ was no help ! The big hurt being in Briggs Masters .On a good year my Max weight is 140 lbs. Had no issue getting up at 4 am Sundays! Could do a whole other message just on the people. 7 years ago we had a new guy. This year should be our 4th Montreal GP!

      Welcome to the sport! And don't worry about not knowing anything, we've all been there! You should be able to put a 206 on just about any adult sized kart. Depending on the kart, and the placement of the seat strut on drivers right, you might have to offset the engine more to drivers right to have clearance. The offset is done by using a motor mount. A really good one for offsetting is the Odenthal mount. Like this: www.accelerationkarting.com/odenthalezsetlo206motormount.html
      I hope that helps!

    Perfect vid for what I was looking for Stahl. Subscribed. Thanks. You customized your HJC helmet yourself? All helmets seem to be plain white or plain black when I look online. Also for clarification I had like 4 other questions if you can answer any or all of them I'd appreciate a lot if you don't mind...:
    1) I was wondering LO206 always means 4-stroke and from my understanding with LO 206 class racing the engine is "sealed" meaning all engines are equal amongst racers and therefore only driver skill makes the difference?? Is that correct?
    2) How much of a difference timewise can a chassis really make - is it really substantial / relevant what chassis you drive for newcomers for beginners?
    3) How long did it take for you to feel not "slow" anymore like you said everyone will start slow but when did you sense progress for yourself?
    Considering that right now the price of buying a kart is the deterrent to entering for me and seeing so many different chassis brands at their different pricepoints confuses it even more for me I guess my number fourth question then would be do you recommend getting a brand new "cheaper brand" kart or a used "more name brand" kart and do you have a recommendation of brand to look at in those categories? Thanks!

    • @StahlRacing
      @StahlRacing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Our helmets were bought from revzilla like 5 years ago as a cheap but safe route haha. No custom paint jobs done.
      1. The point of the 206 class is to have a stock engine putting the burden on the driver yes. Now the short block is sealed, but there's a few things that can be done on the head which is why we send our engines to the Ghost Racing squad. Some people say it's negligible, but since Matt and Derek have done work on my engines, I've never once thought I was getting out-motored by someone. The big difference between the guys in the top 5 and the bottom 5 is driving and handling of the kart. Engine should theoretically be a non-factor in this class.
      2. Chassis CAN be a huge difference maker. I've been on tons of different brands so I speak from experience. Generally, you can make any chassis go fast. I talk to a lot of new racers and give them info based on my experiences, not my loyalty. My loyalty is with BirelART chassis, but I recommend only the Birel AM29, the Comet Eagle, and a few Tony Kart chassis. I suppose MGM could be thrown in the mix as well, but they're just a half step below the other 3 in my personal opinion. However, I have seen every chassis out there be fast and win races. Until last year we owned 3 karts made in 2008 that snagged us plenty of wins and podiums. With the right tuning, most karts can be fast. Local support is huge too. If everyone around you runs a VLR chassis, even though it's not at the top of my list it may be worth it to snag one because you will learn so much quicker and have more resources at your disposal. This is a huge rabbit hole that I can go on forever with though. As a wise man once told me, "Don't overthink it. Keep it simple." The last thing you want is to buy something that winds up being your limiting factor.
      3. I think I noticed it immediately. That sounds arrogant, but it's the truth. Kacy and I both were running midpack in a very competitive field from the start. Now, at that time it wasn't what it is today. If we started at NCMP right now we would easily be back markers for some time. Everyone says seat time is king and it's the truth. You only get faster through practice. Same way your jumpshot gets better in basketball, repetition. After my first race I found the guys who were about .3-.5 faster than me and followed them in practice next time. I didn't try to pass them, I just sat back there and observed. Where are they faster than me? Is there anywhere I'm faster than them? I'd try to replicate their line on the parts of the track I'd lose them. Once I was able to run the same times they were I would find the next group of people that were .3-.5 faster than me and do it over again. It doesn't happen over night. It takes time and a good amount of focus and patience. Then one day you'll be up front running with the big dogs. Mentality is huge too. You've got to be honest with yourself but can't lack confidence. That's something I still struggle with. If I had a better mental then I'd win far more frequently, but that's a whole deal.
      If I were doing it all over again, I wouldn't change what we did. We bought a used kart we knew was competitive at the track. The guy who ran it was a front runner but it was a fraction of the price of a new kart. You can find all sorts of good used karts on the Facebook groups and occasionally on Craigslist even. Just as important as the chassis is the engine starting out. If an engine is not properly maintained and kept, it could cost you on track. That's what's tough about buying used in general though. You never know what the previous owner did. Generally speaking the racing community is a good one and we want to help one another out, specifically the newer drivers. It's hard to give a set list of rules on good vs bad because it's largely dependent on factors specific to your situation that I'm not privy to. So I'll just leave it at if you want to talk more about this, add me on Facebook (Ben Stahl) or Instagram (ben._.stahl) and I can give you more thoughts on your specific situation. If you have trouble finding me for whatever reason, let me know and I'll do what I can to get us linked up. Check out the Briggs 206 Racers group on Facebook if you haven't done this yet, it's a good resource with mostly good people. Hope this helps man!

    • @Drizzydid
      @Drizzydid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StahlRacing Followed on insta. "Hope this helps" I mean man what can I say this is absolutely beyond helpful I'm so grateful for the depth of your response wow. I'm sure others will be too. Clarified so many things like you wouldn't believe. The last thing you want to buy is something that will be your limiting factor that was a lightbulb moment. Really well said I will keep that with me. From your reply I would definitely agree Lo206 sounds like the best class to run. Definitely is easy to overthink chassis for sure I agree like I said it seems like a wild west out there but having those names in mind is something I needed I think to narrow down. You make a good point too about the kart track and what chassis they run / partner with I think that's important also. I will have to look into it. Currently there is no kart track where I am but I may soon be moving to a place where there is one (KC-karting in Missouri) so definitely should know if there is a "consensus kart" being ran at the track upon arrival. If not then those names you mentioned like I said clarify a lot for me to narrow my list down and probably look for one of those 3 in the used market like you said we never know what previous owner did but at the same time when starting out it could be highly beneficial to see what good deals on proven good quality chassis are out there. Seat time will be the most important anyway at the start. And not for a moment when I was reading did it come across as arrogant - was very very helpful Ben thanks again.

    Are there any tips/tricks to get more horsepower out of a lo206 but still not break the lo206 class rules?

    • @StahlRacing
      @StahlRacing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt! Great question. The rules are setup in such a way that little can be done to the motor, which is great for keeping costs low and competition even. The keys to keeping an LO206 at peak power are making sure the carb is clean and the float set to the right level, and making sure the head gasket and valves are not leaking. There are ways to do this yourself, but we prefer to send ours to an LO206 specialist to do the work because it's relatively cheap and it ensures the engine is legal and running at it's peak. There are lots of LO206 specialists out there, but we use and recommend Ghost Racing www.ghostracingengines.com/ they are genuinely fantastic and have some of the best rates around. Using the correct oil (Amsoil Briggs and Stratton 4t has worked great for us) and changing it after each race weekend is also important. Let us know if you have any other questions

    • @StahlRacing
      @StahlRacing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Levi! Kacy here. I'm 6'3 and between 180 and 190. You are not too tall for karting! In all honesty, being tall does make it more challenging, but it's not a show stopper. The goal when tall is to lower your center of gravity as much as you can. The 2 ways you can do that is by a Beasley low profile CIK seat or at least by reclining a standard seat. And by using what's called a 'front porch', which is just an extension at the front that extends the front peddles by a few inches. The front porch is very helpful, but the seat is the most critical.
      If you are in the US or Canada, I highly recommend starting in the LO206 class! It doesn't get more simple, economical, or reliable than the LO206

      @@levicauldwell Ben here, I think that’s dependent on your situation. We race Briggs because the competition is amazing and you don’t have to shovel money into it like other classes. However, if you want to go faster then maybe take a look at KA-100s. It’s supposed to be lower cost/maintenance as far as two cycle engine packages go. You can hit me up on Facebook or Instagram and we can go more in depth on this

    • @StahlRacing
      @StahlRacing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@levicauldwell So this answer is a novel, and it's the sort version lol. feel free to email us at stahlracingvlog@gmail.com if you'd like.
      For kart brand, the best brand in my slightly biased opinion is Birel Art! they have soem of the best karts for every cc level for both 2 cycle and 4 cycle motors.
      Top kart brands for 2 cycle: Birel Art, Tony Kart (includes Kosmic, and a few other brands), Kart Republic, and Will Power Kart
      Other top brands for 4 cycle: Birel Art AM29, Comet Eagle, and the Tony Kart STV 450 are all very solid.
      But with all that said, the best kart is the one that is supported near you. It makes it easier to get parts and support. In Indiana, those are all well supported, but may or may not be at your local track.
      As a beginner, even though you have experience on dirt bikes and ATV's, karts are different animals to drive. They are different because they have a solid rear axle, no suspension, and have a high level of grip. It can take a while to master the technique. For that reason, I highly recommend starting in Briggs LO206. All of the engines are essentially equal, so you can focus on kart setup and driving. A perk is this the largest karting class in the country so there are usually large fields. If LO206 is out of the question for you, then a 100cc is the best starting spot. Here's a quick overview of the options. For the cc question, it ultimately comes down to budget.
      Engine options:
      4 cycle: Briggs and Stratton LO206 is by far the cheapest.
      Next is 2 cycle, which is more expensive because of more engine maintenance and using more tires. We only run LO206, so we do not have experience with the 2 cycles, but i can give you high level, cheapest to most expensive:
      100cc: KA100 is the wave of the future here. Yamaha KT100's are being phased out, so they can be found cheaper.
      125cc: there are a few options, but the IAME 125 TaG seems to be the most popular
      Shifter: range from 80 - 175 cc's. These things are absolute beasts.

      @k smith a major piece to the used kart puzzle is where you are located and what brands are best supported around you. Some of the top lo206 karts are: Birel Art AM29 (#1 in our totally biased opinion 😄), Tony Kart STV 450 or 401R, and the Comet Eagle are solid choices

    just got into lo206 racing. how hard are they to drive. is it really easy to spin. first practice is in a week on a repaved track so it is very slippery is what i was told.

    • @StahlRacing
      @StahlRacing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tyler, Welcome to the family! You're gonna love it! That's a tough question. Technically yes they are very easy to spin. However, as long as you don't slam your brakes you shouldn't have much of an issue. No matter what, it's gonna happen one way or another. Whether you're on cold tires and spin from trying to go too hard too soon, or just lock up the brakes out of panic, you'll go around a time or two. Everyone has done it. Just learn from it. These karts are super friendly and with a decent setup you shouldn't worry too much. What track is it?

    What's a standard run of the mill sprocket set you would recommend for LO206? I know this is a loaded question, but I'm looking for a safe "in the middle" set up for a 219 chain.

    • @StahlRacing
      @StahlRacing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @IRQVET that will depend heavily on the track you plan on racing. At NCMP we use a 21 tooth driver and usually 71 -75 rear sprockets with 219 chain. What track are you looking to run?

      I'd recommend the BirelART AM 29 (of course!), The Comet Eagle, and the MGM. There's many other great brands, but these are probably the most popular three. I think Facebook is the best way to find the most affordable used karts, but your local kart shop could definitely use your support. That's a tough questions because it's different with every situation. Supporting your local shop/track is always nice. Facebook buy/sell groups has the best deals. Pslkarting.com is the North American BirelART page and those guys will get you hooked up as well.

    what are the dimensions/wheelbase of the lo206 kart? thanks

    • @StahlRacing
      @StahlRacing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the class and local series. For example, I've run 8 inch rims for a 7.1 inch tire, but I've also run a 6 inch rim for a 6 inch tire. The series rules dictates a lot of it, then whatever your kart likes is the next question. Generally we use a 210mm run for our 7.1 inch tire for the birel

      You can run just normal 87 octane from your local station truthfully. We run ethanol free gas so it doesn’t gunk up the carb but it will run fine off 87.

    Pretty sure you need to replace your helmet after 5 years. Road racing motorcycles they dont let you have a helmet with a manufacturer date older than 5 years as the foam in the helmet tends to deteriorate over time.

      We race against the Stahl’s in 206 and also race X30 and Yamaha. The 206 class is by far the most fun and the close competition is incredible. If we had to only run one class forever it would be 206. Two cycle is awesome for sure, but 206 is so much more simple, affordable, and just pure fun. I think much depends on your goals, budget, and where / level you want to race.
