Not sure if I've posted this before, apologies if I have. In Australia, you can buy "double strength" white vinegar at the grocery stores which is 8-10% acetic acid. I do garden maintenance part-time and use this undiluted to spray on and kill weeds. I've done side by sides and it works just as well as the glyphosate-based weedkillers I used to apply and no nasty chemicals. Great info in this video Gary and I'm glad you mentioned the problems with adding salt to the mix. Cheers! 👍
@@ausfoodgarden thanks mate!I was looking at organic weed killer at bunnings, they have something called called "Slasher" but this double strength vinegar from coles/woolies works out about half the price per litre compared to slasher.
Just the post I'm looking for. I've bought the same 8% vinegar from Coles. Did that vinegar stop the weeds from growing back and did it damage the soil to nearby plants that you wanted to keep?
@@oot007 There will always be weeds growing. Same as Glyphosate it kills weeds but more will grow. The vinegar quickly breaks down in the soil so doesn't have an area of effect.
This is a God sent video. I was just spraying weeds in my driveway with regular salad vinegar. I saw Walmart sells a cleaning type of vinegar and I was wondering if it was more concentrated than the salad vinegar. I will definitely try your recipes.

This will be on my to do list tomorrow. Just finished mulching the backyard so around the raised beds I've got some weeds poking thru. I've never heard of using Epsom salt which I've got a ton of.

I used a mix of 1 gallon of 7.5% pickling vinegar for $3.50 ( they wanted $30 for 50% vinegar ) + 1 cup of table salt and 1 tablespoon of Dawn dish soap - I sprayed on my weeds and the next day 75% of them had turned brown. I resprayed the second day and they all died. Very effective and very cheap = win win ....

Can you use this technique to clear a piece of ground to put a garden? How many times to spray to kill grass & weeds good to put garden in? How many times to spray before using lime? After you spray & like, how soon can you put in garden?
To clear a space. I lay down 2 layers of card board and either mulch or compost it, depending if it is a walking or growing sections. You can use lime a couple days after the area is dead. I would use it to clear out a space for a garden. Too much acid. I chopped down the weeds with a weedwacker and plan on spraying this on the remains to kill it off. Will I be able to plant the same year if I wait a few weeks?
You can. If you are worried you increased acidity, drop some lime in the space. I had rocks put in my flower beds last year and planted perennials to make it low maintenance. They put down weed cloth before the rocks, but I don’t think they did a very good job. This spring I have grass & weeds everywhere. I had some perennials that didn’t make it through the winter, so I need to replace them. Can I replant after spraying 30% vinegar if I don’t use salt or epson salt?

I am a soapmaker/gardener. I can control what kind of fats go into the soap, is there any in particular that would be more beneficial in the soap that I use in the garden? I love your book, read it cover to cover!!! Thanks
Thanks so much on the book. Very appreciated. That is just Castile type. Very pure. The harsh detergents do more damage to roots but it is the basic soapy coating on leaves in a high concentration that works. Maybe something heavy soap wise. The little effect vinegar can have on soil pH is very short lived. It's broken down fairly quickly by sunlight and bacteria.... similar to how glyphosate breaks down fairly quickly.... except glyphosate actually works 😂

What sprayer are you using. I am having trouble finding sprayer that is compatible with horticulture acid. All sprayers I looked into says the acid will damage the seal.

Thank you as always Gary. Do you think it would work on bamboo? Preferably cutting the stalks down to ground level and spraying inside of the shoots to kill the root nodes? Possibly adding an extra step of drilling a hole down into each shoot before spraying?
So acidifying the soil and salting it with ES would work but I think you'd render the whole area unplantable. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Hopefully by being controlled with only pouring/spraying the solution inside the hollow shoots, after cutting them to ground level, won't cause too much adverse effects to the soil. Like you said, any minimal overspray/spillage should dissipate within a couple of years which should work out perfectly considering I have wood chips covering my entire backyard. I had 23 trees cut down and am using the chips to hopefully bring my concrete clay and sand dirt to some sort of semblance of topsoil in 2-3 years so I can grow grass. Wish me luck! My issue with using vinegar for weed killer is, it kills the weeds but in a couple weeks they come back. And the stronger vinegar is pretty pricey. The weak regular vinegar didn’t work for me.

Hi Gary I'm not so sure why the Epsom salt. The soap I'm assuming your using as a surfactant. I use the same 30% vinegar for the perimeter around the house but I apply Epsom salt to the whole garden to add magnesium and sulfur (8 lbs to 800 total sq. ft.) because my tests come back low in sulfur and magnesium and it has never caused a problem. While I have your ear what do you use to control your slugs. The garden is high in Iron, Copper, and Zinc so the treatments I'm familiar with aren't practical. I'm also curious about which service you use for soil tests I have been using A&L eastern but I've had problems with them this year. Thanks Mike from Bowie, P.S. I read about the farm where you volunteer, and found out your on the board of directors I hope they appreciate your talents and dedication.
Its the quantity of table salt or epsom salt in the mix. The quantity creates a bad root environment, due to heavy concentration of chemical SALTS in the soil, it dehydrates roots, stops nutrient pick up and other stuff. ES is good in low doses but not at 1 cup in a gallon. Hopefully you are doing 1 or 2 tablespoons of ES per gallon of water for feeding. Thanks so much. Oh and the soap also, at high amounts kills the leaf too. I haven't tested this soil believe it or not. Since I have a ton of compost, I learned slow and steady. If a big issue comes up, Ill do a soil test. Freetown Farm is a lot of fun. I think you will be stuck with dealing with it physically at first. Weed wack it, pull it, and chop it. The heavy-duty chemicals will not even hurt the older waxy leaves. Then when you see new light green growth you might could hit it with the vinegar solution. It will eventually give up. It has a tendency to leave roots and pop up close to the base of plants. You will have to hand pull that. It takes time but I have removed it from a heavily covered acre.

Thanks for the tips! I want to use this on my gravel driveway but also have large trees alongside that have mulch beds that are starting to show weeds. It's in a class called chemical SALTS. Sodium Chloride or table salt gets its nickname from being in the class. Magnesium Sulfate or Epsom Salt is in that category. It is confusing a bit so it is a SALT but not table salt.

Adding Epsom salt has never made sense to me because it's used to help plants in the garden... so I don't use it. I also don't add water. It's just 6% vinegar with several TBSP of Dawn dish soap... it has to be shaken periodically to make sure it's mixed. Works great, except I don't have much luck with dandelions and other plants with long taproots. It kills the leaves, but they still come back. As soon as you kill the flowers or buds on dandelions, they immediately go to seed and become a threat of spreading. So I use a tool to pull them out, instead. I also make sure to pull the flowers so bees are not impacted, too!
Its the concentration of 1 cup in a gallon. That creates a chemical SALT issue in the soil that effects plant roots. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN I’d probably need an industrial size bottle for each square foot! 😂. They say their roots grow as deep as 30’!! Lol!! But, seriously, I think I will just give it a good soak with a high %
I would try watering the grass, if it has been dry... Then, cover with a dark colored heavy poly tarp.. Make sure No Light gets under there, while it Grows itself out. Starves. If it is hot and sunny, could really work for you. If the grass is dormant, like in cool season... Does not matter if you cover it. Does nothing.

Cheers! 👍
Do you mix it with anything else or straight vinegar?
@@Nagggl Just straight, no dilution and no salt like some suggest.

I resprayed the second day and they all died. Very effective and very cheap = win win ....

How far away from your plants you do want would you spray number 1? Thank you. I have some rock garden borders I have planted perennials, biennials and annuals, along with vegetables. I need to spray the pokey weeds in between the plants. Thank you Gary, a great video again, very informative
It is a contact killer so if some other roots absorb it, it wont go through their system. You can get pretty close.

Great video and advise. I have weeds growing amongst my carpet grass.. Any advise on how to get rid of them. I don't want to kill the grass though
Not besides chemicals. That is tough.

Thank you for the video. I was wondering if this kills the bugs?? Good and Bad.
It won't once dried. But the acid would kill insects.

Thank you . . . . very informative! 😎👍😎

Did you mean to say that you would NOT use it to clear a space because of too much acid? You are not clear in your reply.
Will this work on mesquite tree shoots/starts? Our pasture is covered in them all of a sudden. Rather not use poison. Thanks!
It is good at killing top growth. But you need a lot to get to the roots.

I chopped down the weeds with a weedwacker and plan on spraying this on the remains to kill it off. Will I be able to plant the same year if I wait a few weeks?
You can. If you are worried you increased acidity, drop some lime in the space.

Thank you for the details on this video. I sprayed my weeds with 10% vinegar no water added and weeds died off. My front yard is full of weeds. How can I plant a new grass and when to do it. Thanks

If I spray nutsedge that is 12 inches away from my blackberry bush, will it affect my blackberry roots under the ground?
It could but it doesn't travel up the roots to the plant. So they should be fine

I had rocks put in my flower beds last year and planted perennials to make it low maintenance. They put down weed cloth before the rocks, but I don’t think they did a very good job. This spring I have grass & weeds everywhere. I had some perennials that didn’t make it through the winter, so I need to replace them. Can I replant after spraying 30% vinegar if I don’t use salt or epson salt?
drop some lime across the area and water it in. That neutralizes acidity.

What about using muriatic acid? Instead of vinegar? It’s corrosive and potentially toxic but use to use it to keep tropical fish acidic and is used to acidify pools a bit
That I just don't know. I havent used it.

How about acid loving plants, blueberries or hydrangeas? When you do not have acid soil, does 1/2 tsp vinegar with a gallon water work when watering them?

That doesn’t seem like it would be enough to make a difference.
The little effect vinegar can have on soil pH is very short lived. It's broken down fairly quickly by sunlight and bacteria.... similar to how glyphosate breaks down fairly quickly.... except glyphosate actually works 😂
Does this method work on horsetail? plus I would be worried about the birds and bees.
It mostly kills surface growth and shallow roots. If the the roots are deep, it just beats them back for a while.

Any success in dealing with japanese beetles?
I assume when using salt you dissolve it in a warm water first? Also how did this sprayer hold up against vinegar and salt? Does it get clogged or do seals disintegrate over time from vinegar? What brand sprayer ?

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you what kind or brand is it ?
Living in France I've found 20% vinager. Would I use it pure or still add some water? Again thanks for all your videos and info.
20% is about right. You can cut it lower. Just depends. The key is to really soak the leaves. 10% will burn leaves too.

What sprayer are you using. I am having trouble finding sprayer that is compatible with horticulture acid. All sprayers I looked into says the acid will damage the seal.
So this is just HD brand. They are cheap. Its not rated for acid. But I have not had seal issues over a couple years of use.

Thank you as always Gary. Do you think it would work on bamboo? Preferably cutting the stalks down to ground level and spraying inside of the shoots to kill the root nodes? Possibly adding an extra step of drilling a hole down into each shoot before spraying?
Nuclear bomb recommended. 🤪
So acidifying the soil and salting it with ES would work but I think you'd render the whole area unplantable. Sorry

@@gardengirl2420 You are soo right! It's the bane of all lawn and garden existence.
@@bassmastadee8246 and not the best way to meet the neighbors down the street when it comes up in their yards!!! 😆
And by the way , I used your discount in purchasing mushrooms from Northspore to inoculate in the woodchips too!!! Thanks as always!
Will this damage the soil, or is it safe to grow food after spraying a garden bed with this?
I would spray directly in planting beds only cause it can increase acidity but around the yard, in garden paths, along edges of raised beds, I am not worried about it.

Worth a try. but I am just not familiar with it. Over time killing the top grow, eventually starves the roots. You might need a couple applications.

I needed this, thank you! I'm curious, does this work on english ivy?
It would kill the top growth. The roots are pretty strong. It is worth a shot but they probably will come back. You might have to hit them a few times.

@@mikeyfoofoo Thank you. That sounds like a good strategy. The fact that you had success is very encouraging!
Thanks

Thanks for the tips! I want to use this on my gravel driveway but also have large trees alongside that have mulch beds that are starting to show weeds. Is this solution too weak to harm the trees or should I keep it away from the trees and do something else to control the weeds in my tree mulch beds?
it should not harm mature trees.

Not to argue but Epsom Salt is Magnesium, not salt. What makes this addition effective?
It's in a class called chemical SALTS. Sodium Chloride or table salt gets its nickname from being in the class. Magnesium Sulfate or Epsom Salt is in that category. It is confusing a bit so it is a SALT but not table salt.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks!
Will this work on poison ivy?? Thank you for providing the information.
Yea but I would do recipe 3 with the epsom salt.

Bind weed is my enemy right now. That root system is massive! Will never use round up. What effect on tree roots where the truck is 15 feet away?
I don't think this would effect trees. Its not about what is absorb. It is the contact to the acidity.

What about using cleaning vinegar?
I am not familiar with it but you need to know the percentage of vinegar in it.

Have you tried it with Bermuda grass? Which recipe would be the most ‘successful’? I know that getting rid of Bermuda completely is next to impossible 😂. (Short of a nuclear bomb) But, to control garden spread
So you'd be giving it a good soak to acidity the roots. In theory it would work. Just not sure how much you'd need.

I have some weeds that I definitely going to use this on. 👍😎🌴🌻🌸😀😎🌴👍 - LazyLizLife

Hmmm, what if you combined a gallon of the concentrated vinegar and a gallon of the grocery store version?
That makes 17.5% acidity. That works.
