THE DUPREES TODAY have a 39 year lineage of stage performances and in every show still pay homage to the original guys who started it all back in 1961, Mike Arnone, Joe Santollo, Joey Van, John Salvato, Tom Bialoglo, and Mike Kelly. Little has been written about the original Duprees before the internet but much has been discussed by people who either have an agenda, a favorite lead singer or just by people who think they know the facts or try to lay claim to its membership. Many people have come up to me and asked do you know this guy or that guy who claims to be the original lead singer or former member and it goes on and on and on. So for this reason I would like to go on record publicly. All though I knew the entire original member's except Tommy B. who left the group in the early 1960's. I cannot talk about the early days of the Original Duprees as I came into the group in 1978 through my cousin Joe Cataldo who at that time had a long association with the guys as a member of The Elgins who's members later co-founded The Duprees. Then later as stage manager for The Duprees from the early days on into the 1970's when my cousin first introduced me to the group as a fan. I received a telegram from John Salvato in 1978 asking me to audition for the lead spot that began a life long association with The Duprees.
As popular music was changing in all directions at that time, for various reasons mainly disco, performing only 25 jobs that year with Joe Santollo, Mike Arnone, John Salvato, Larry Casanova and myself on lead. Up to that point there were only three lead singers for the group, Joey Van, Mike Kelly and myself Tommy Petillo. Starting in 1980 for a short time in the scope of things, there were two separate Duprees groups performing at the same time. There was the Mike Arnone group with lead singer Richie Rosato and also John Salvato’s Duprees with myself on lead for the 2nd time. Richie Rosato who came into the Duprees in 1980 left the group in 2001 to be replaced by Me Tommy Petillo for a third time as lead for the Duprees. Around 1989 Mike Arnone won the rights to the name and that is the group that is performing today for the past 38 years. The Mike Arnone family holds the Trade Mark with Tony Testa who is the caretaker and leader of the Duprees. Along with their unique sound and outstanding vocal harmonies, The Duprees today play to sold out shows where ever they perform with a showmanship that is individually and collectively, second to none. Thousands of fans around the globe are captivated with their wonderful mixture of romance, energy, and fun. When The Duprees take the stage, be prepared to be thoroughly entertained. Tommy Petillo.
    .

I knew them well, from Seaside. My friend Theresa & I would party with them. Many times we would comb their hair, & fix their customers, & enter the club with them. We would sit in the front & they would sing to us. They were always very nice. Our favorite was Joe S. Once they gave me an uncut record called Two different worlds. Their manager at that time was Victor& one of the musician's name was Jesus Crist. I have an old photograph of them with their phone number on it. I truly miss those days.

I am just knocked out seeing this classic Vid., thank-you so very, very much. I've often said that in many ways, The Duprees were at their very best in those " Heritage Years ", & this version of " Goodnight My Love" is a classic example. , Mike Kelly was movie star handsome, & what a voice he had. Great, great memories!! Wolfsky9, 66 y/o

      Hello Frank,
I have had a long association with the group
starting early 1978. My cousin who was there for most of the early years told
me the group did very little TV, as to why we'll never know I guess. The only
other video I know of available is the one on TH-cam of Mike Kelly lip sinking
to Joey Van and The Duprees recording of You Belong To Me. although I believe Kelly did
go on to record his own version with the Duprees. I know of NO video with Joey
Van on lead as well. Not to take anything away from the great Joey Van but
Kelly was a superior vocalist who had to bend his soulful style to the Doo Wop
crowd when singing the early hits of Joey Van. He did however, as many Duprees
fans know, went on to record many great records with the group. I was very
happy to share this very rare video of the group at their best. Tommy P.

I just found this video of "Goodnight My Love" by the Duprees the other night on TH-cam. It was a real treat because I thought the song was going to be the standard song entitled "Goodnight My Love". This led me to do some research into the group, starting back at the beginning. It is SO interesting to see how much talent this group embodied throughout the years. I have always liked the Duprees throughout the years and think the present group is also fantastic. Thank you for the postings. I joined the Facebook page too. It is great fun ... a little bit nostalgic and sad because so many of the members have passed on ... but still a joy to watch!!!

I know I entered earlier, but I must say it again : this era was golden --at least musically. The guys never, ever sounded stronger or better than they did during the " Heritage years " , IMHO. Mike Kelly had a fantastic voice, & the harmonies were just the very best. My thanks to you again for this post --I was 20 y/o, heading to 21 when this song came out, though in Denver I'm sad to say, I never heard it on our 2 AM Top 40 stations, or our 1 FM " rock " station. Hi, Tommy. My name is Butch Feuker and I sang with a Bayonne group called, The Notations. We had the great pleasure of singing on the same stage at the Duprees . It was some time in the early 60s. We opened for them. They were the main group. I still remember them as great singers and guys. We sang at the Elks club in Elizabeth N.J. It was a very big hall, a few hundred fans. We had a great time. The new Duprees still sound great and do justice the the original group. Take care, Butch Feuker.

Tom you are a great lead singer I grew up on Storms Ave and I was 12 years old when I use to listen to Joey Santollo and I knew him very well he always made time for me I was a young boy and would listen to them sing as they practiced in Joeys basement. When Mike Kelly who some say had a better voice than Chubby came in 64. Tom B left when His buddy Joey. Left in fact they reall didn't want Tommy but Joey came as a package deal. You sang I believe in the late 70 s when Mike Arnone started up the group again. Joey Santollo was dead and I think so was Vann. You sang with another good friend of mine Larry Casanova his family and my family were very close.

Tommy, I'm an old time doo wop singer from way back. I grew up in Manhattan's Little Italy with Johnny "Motts" Martinucci, formerly of the Demensions, and now with Just Friends. I think you know him (did a show together?). He and I sang just about every Dupree song many times when we sang together in the 60's. Of course, he sang lead. I'm just a lowly first tenor.

Along with their unique sound and outstanding vocal harmonies, The Duprees perform with showmanship that is individually and collectively, second to none. Thousands of fans around the globe are captivated with their wonderful mixture of romance, energy, and fun. When The Duprees take the stage, be prepared to be thoroughly entertained for more info. visit_www.duprees.com.
THE DUPREES TODAY have a 37 year lineage of stage performances and pay homage in every show to the original guys who started it all..Mike Arnone, Joe Santollo, Joey Van, John Salvato, Tom Biaglo, and Mike Kelly. Little has been written about the Duprees before the internet but much has been discussed by people who either have an agenda, a favorite lead singer or just by people who think they know the facts or try to lay claim to its membership. Many people have come up to me and asked do you know this guy or that guy who claims to be the original lead singer or former member and it goes on and on and on. So for this reason I would like to go on record publicly.
All though I knew all the original member's except Tommy B who left the group in 1963. I cannot talk about the early days of the Original Duprees as I came into the group in 1978 through my cousin Joe Cataldo who was there stage manager from 1961 on. I did not keep a record of my stage performances in 1978 and only started to keep a record in 1979. Popular music was changing in all directions at that time, for various reasons we only performed 25 jobs that year with Joe Santollo, Mike Arnone, John Salvato, Larry Casanova and myself on lead. Up to that point there were only three lead singers for the group, Joey Van, Mike Kelly and myself Tommy Petillo. Sure there were a couple of tryouts that did not cut the mustard and shortly gone, sorry no names. The only other main stay lead was Richie Rosatto.
Starting in 1980 for a short time in the scope of things, there were two seperate Duprees groups performing at the same time. The Mike Arnone family holds the Trade Mark. Also with Tony Testa who is the caretaker and leader of the Duprees today and that's a fact jack of Duprees history.
    LOL TOMMY PETILLO
As a foot note I would like to add the names in chronological order lead singers and vocalists who have filled in, work with (for a short time) or replaced members in the past 40 years as best as I remember. Mike Kelly (lead-1964 to 1979)… Larry Casanova_(vocalist-mid 1970’s to 1979)…Frank Cirell (early 1970's lead)......
    Tom Petillo_(lead_1978 to 1979 then with (Salvatos Duprees) 1983 to 1986_ then with (Arnone Duprees)(2001 to present)…. Phil Granito (early 1980's to present)...Tony Testa early 1980's to present)...Jimmy Spinelli (mid 1980's to present)...Allan Ladda(vocalist-early 1980’s)…..Richie Rosatto_(lead-1981 to 2001)… Larry Caton_(vocalist-early 1980)…..Mike Shavo_(lead-early 1980’s)….Bobby Valli_(vocalist-early 1980’s)….Vinny Crecca_ (vocalist-early 1980’s)….Tom Biaglow_ (vocalist-1980’s) Anthony Cagiano_ (lead-2000-2001)…Johnny Rand_(lead-2003)…

The only station in NYC who played that great song, Goodnight My Love was WOR-FM and it was big hit there in Nov.-Dec. `68.My personal favorite by them was I`m Yours & my second favorite is I Understand(1965-Columbia).That was great too.

Mike Kelly was a great talent. But he wasted his talent because he was addicted to drugs. My short personal contact with him was in the early 80's when he was living in the same house as my girlfriend & intended fiancee & her friend. Mike would come down to their apartment with a supply of cocaine & put it on the table for my fiancee, her friend & her boyfriend to enjoy. While they did that in my presence, I would go to another room & listen to music. When I conversed with Mike & talked about music & his singing, he would change the subject. I realized that if I married my then fiancee, I would be making a huge mistake, because in her words "I love cocaine". May I say that later, just a few years before his death in a place on Long Island, he was trying to revive his career in music. Rest In Peace Mike Kelly we surely miss You.

You two are so lucky! I'm only 26 and have no personal association to any member of the Dupree's.
Could one of you please answer a question of mine - Which ethnicity was Mike Kelly? The man seem to shift between Irish Pale and Afro American depending on which video or photo I view.
I adore the man, one of my big regrets in life not having seen him perform live.

@@catmother1989Yeah, you gotta admit the guy was a good looking guy. Half Irish descent & half Colombian descent. When I last ran in to him, he was trying to revive his singing career, and tried to hook up with a band I am friends with, but sad to say his reputation re his unreliability worked against him. Rest In Peace Mike.

Mike Kelly was good but Joey Vann was great and his voice was unmistakable on all Duprees hits. Richie Rosato is the nearest voice to his. I have seen the Duprees perform for more than 40 years and I am still a fan.

+Jamie Reilly Joey Vann fronted the group very well. But NO WAY was he a better singer than Mike Kelly. Vann did NOT have the pitch control Kelly had, nor did Vann have a falsetto voice. He often strained and fluctuated notes and had nowhere near the versatility and style of Kelly. You ask anyone who sang with the Duprees and they'll tell you that Mike Kelly was the group's best lead singer. But all you have to do is listen to the songs Kelly sang lead on.

Mike Kelly actually did the demos than left that's when the 3 guys Arnone Santollo and Salvato needed a lead and they recruited Canzano who wouldn't go without Tommy I wonder would would have happened if Mike went on that interview with Paxton. Would the hits have been there who knows Mike had such a beautiful voice but for some reason never charted. Keep the Duprees alive Tom Joey was my idol.

My cuz Joe Cataldo told me that Mike sang the demos. He sang with the Elgins before they merged with the Parisians before they became the Duprees. He had a long history and friendship with the guys. Best Tp
