Just curious, was it your first Metroidvania title? Or have you tried a game like Hollow Knight or Steam World Dig? I find that newcomers to the Metroid series(such as myself) find Dread to be much more manageable if they have prior experience in the genre.

Metroid Dread is better designed and better polished than probably most other 60$ games out there today.
The only problem I can see in starting playing Metroid games from Dread is that it would be a bit difficult to play the previous games in the franchise because of less movement mechanics, fluidity and control.

My first playthrough I took my time and took in the whole scene. Whenever I got a new upgrade, I would turn back and find every upgrade possible before pressing forward. I didn't need a massive end-game-sweep for upgrades. Cleared it 100% in 17 hrs. I don't think it's short at all. But, next playthroughs I'm focusing on just pressing on low-percent like and it goes much quicker. But the whole thing flows and is satisfying. I'm on my third playthrough and it is so much fun still! There's multiple routes to take, upgrades to skip, enemies to beat differently, boss quick kills... In short, there's so much variety that you can just play it over and over in different and satisfying ways.

I think it can. Most, if not all, of the difficult segments are located immediately after a checkpoint or save room, making it a simple matter of repetition. The map markers are really handy, and (as Jon said) the game gives you subtle hints as to your next destination. And of course, the tutorials are accessible whenever you need them. The hidden E-Tanks and Missile Packs are nice, but absolutely not necessary to beat the game.

  • @espeumbrex
    @espeumbrex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Speaking as someone who's familiar with the 2D Metroid series (started all but 2/Samus Returns but never beat any of them other than Dread) I can confidently say there isn't anything here to keep someone new to the series from wholeheartedly enjoying Dread even if they haven't played any of the others. I feel like there's some story beats that won't have the same amount of impact without some prior knowledge of the overarching plot or lore, but for the most part Dread's prologue does a good job of getting you up to speed.
The "is it worth $60?" question is harder to answer - it's very subjective. Do you base a game's value by how long it takes you to finish it? If so, then a game that can be beaten comfortably in around 10 hours the first time through may not be worth your money, especially if you don't plan on replaying it. But if you value the experience and enjoyment more than the runtime you'll definitely find a lot to like here. And considering you'll need to beat the game a minimum of six times to unlock every completion bonus it definitely gives you a reason to blast through multiple times.
All in all, I hugely enjoyed (and still am enjoying) my time with Dread - I'm currently on my second of what I'm sure will be countless playthroughs.

    • @alexandermuniz2531

You don't HAVE to beat the game six times to get the Ending Rewards. If you finish Normal Mode under 4 hours you get all 3 rewards, and if you do Hard Mode under 4 you get the other 3 rewards as well.
I personally did a 100% run of the game first to familiarize myself with the controls, then did a Normal speedrun, and then did the Hard Mode speedrun immediately after and have a save file with all the rewards now. Now I'm just doing a 4th playthrough just for fun

This has already surpassed Fusion as my favorite 2D Metroid, Hell it probably rivals the original Prime as my favorite in the series (though I may have to ruminate on that later one and replay Prime)

I was originally not planning to get this game. But then I remembered that I played and loved Fusion all those years ago. And then I remembered that I played and absolutely loved all the Castlevania games on the GBA and DS. This game was obviously built for me so glad I am playing it.

Yes, this was my first Metroid game and I played all the way through and beat it in 12 hours. It was very difficult but rewarding when beating a boss or getting an suit upgrade. I’m familiar with Samus from smash bros since N64 and it was cool to see Samus as the main character in a game.

14:31 If you like games in which you explore, if you like action adventure games, if you like a challenge, this game is most definitely worth the $60 (USD) price tag. Yes, i know there are other MetroidVanias out there that are cheaper. I love Hollow Knight. I bought it when it was on sale. I think the game is underrated, considering the man-hours that went into ALL the art and ALL the animations. I still have yet to beat that game, because some bosses are blocking my progression, but I will still say that the game is underrated

As someone who's played all the 2D titles, I'm in awe at how much Dread keeps rising up the list. It's currently sitting at #2, only behind Super. I was very pleasantly surprised to realize I'm enjoying this game even more than Zero Mission and Fusion. It's been a _long_ time since I've been this invested in a game. Well worth the price tag to me, without question.

I bought this game out of pure curiosity, and it's been great so far! I don't consider myself a Metroid pro, or a Metroid fan by any means and I feel like the game explains the mechanics well enough that anyone can jump in both new or old! I've been totally getting destroyed but been really enjoying the learning process overall. I think I like it! I may try out other Metroid games too! Whenever I beat this one. I don't play platformers that often I'm more of a jrpg guy myself. Or the occasional open world.

I think Jon said it best: it's a good game to start but you would appreciate the game more if you played the other Metroid games and I agree. When I first saw Metroid Dread when they announced it at E3, I went and played the other Metroid games. I only played Other M and some of the Prime games, but when I finished Zero Mission, Super, and Fusion (sadly I couldn't play Samus Returns), I appreciate Dread so much more.

This is essentially my first Metroid game and really enjoying it (even with my numerous "Game Over" screens). Tis tough but fair.
I do have Prime Trilogy on WiiU, but had no idea what I was doing an hour or 2 into the first and dropped off completely years back.
But Dread might bring me back into retrying the Prime series too (I know it's a different storyline completely, before anyone jumps at me)

As somebody who's very familiar with the Metroid vania genre, I actually never played a actual Metroid game. Metroid is my first Metroid game, and I love it. I personally am not the biggest story guy, but I do enjoy a good story in a video game. But I feel Metroid doesn't really dwell on the story and more or less just focuses on its gameplay, which isn't a bad thing by any means. I feel that this is a good Metroid game for people just getting into the series, I haven't played any other Metroid game, but I can at least assume that most 2D metroids function like this one. And personally, I'm having a blast playing this one. ihaven't been addicted to a game in a while... But this one just kind of sinks you in, making you want to find every secret, every ability, and destroy every boss.

Metroid games have never been about a cohesive story to me. The story is told in the atmosphere, environments, music, monsters, weapons, and exploration; that’s the enjoyable part to me.
The story is very much minimalist in the style of it’s influence from the iconic “Alien” film. Almost anyone could play Super Metroid and MOST Metroid games (especially 2D) without reading text and enjoy it as much as someone trying to follow the story. I like how the game lets your mind wander in that eerie exciting way.
I’ve played every Metroid game besides Other M, and Federation Force and loved them all. Metroid Zero Mission is my favorite even better than Fusion IMO. MZM is an S Tier remake of the original and improves it in every way. Also MZM unlocks NES Metroid original when you beat it. It’s a solid game to get into speed running with.
I can’t wait to get Dread. I almost bought the digital edition on night one but held back. I’m really making an effort to go mostly physical again after going heavy digital through 2020. I haven’t had time to get to the store yet. I probably need to eat ramen for a week or two to pick it up but it’s worth it.
    PS:
I think Nintendo has a timeline problem with many of their popular game series (see The Legend of Zelda Series). The Metroid story isn’t as confusing but there are some missing spots and confusion.

  • @Rawbherb

Started with this and loving it! I watched a plot synopsis of the series up to this point and it’s pretty easy to understand the plot of this game. I think Samus looks stylish as hell and the game is really pretty which really drew me into this one whereas previous ones didn’t really hook me. Can’t wait for Metroid after this

The platforming in metroid dread feels like the cleanest most satisfying platforming since Zero Mission. The combat is the best in the series aswell. Using the phase thing to dodge makes fighting so much more fun.

One thing I will say, it might be rather tough going back to older Metroid games after playing this one. It's not that the older ones aren't excellent games, but Dread has a much more detailed map and feels smoother to control overall. Not that Nintendo would ever do this, but if Nintendo ever decided to remake all the previous 2D Metroid releases using this new engine, I would happily buy them.

This is the first Metroid game I beat. I did try Super Metroid before and it seemed like a very good game. I think I got stuck somewhere and stopped playing it. Metroid Dread is one of the best games I have ever played. There are tough boss fights but they don't feel unfair. It was worth 60, and I am definitely going back to beat it in hard mode.

Before dread i played a small amount of other m, and metroid 2 on gameboy (child me got completely lost trying to work out how to progress that), but I was excited enough about dread to preorder the collectors edition. 6 hours in and I'm loving it, even if I've not really experienced the series or even the genre before. After I beat it, I will definitely play super on nso, or mini SNES.
