Back then, another portuguese player with a number 7, also having been Best in the World, broke signing records - Luis Figo - and traded Barcelona for Real Madrid, becoming the first signed Galatico...dropped his 7 and picked up a 10. Raul was already there... he basically played for R. Madrid from '92 to 2010, he wasn't even 15 when he signed for Real Madrid...c'mon the guy's name is literally Blanco...he bleeds Real Madrid

Numbers between 1-11 in football are related to positioning on the pitch! (at least in classic times). 7 equals to right winger. It's where Cristiano started playing in Portugal youth club.
In the late 80s, 7 was held by legendary French and Manchester United KING, Eric Cantona (you should react to him some day!). He played as a 9 (striker) but loved number 7. So he made it a brand in Manchester United team. After Cantona, it was held by BECKHAM. After Beckham, it was given to Cristiano. That's how he ended up being CR7. (even though he played also as an 11 (position) in Manchester United, a left winger...Than a 9 (striker) for the rest of his career (until now!) after coming to Madrid...But still by wearing the number 7!
