Episode 2 - Foundation this!

- A great-looking sweater begins with strong foundations: 1. what yarn to use; 2. what hook size to use; and 3. what stitches to use. In this episode I will explain how these three pieces work together to create a crochet fabric that's perfect for sweaters. Your homework is to choose the yarn, practice the stitches by making swatches with different hook sizes and select the fabric that displays both tight stitching and good drape. This way you will be ready to start your sweater in Episode 3.

Im so glad there are more men on here and especially one who doesn't cater to the female population. Men's crochet apparel is so underrepresented in this community.
Great channel. Very different and a joy to watch. You don't need a "professional" channel, just be who you are. That's what makes you unique.
Very nice, , , It didn’t take long at all to make your video smooth and professional looking. I can’t wait for the next one. . . 👍🏼
I was about to comment the same thing. Big improvement on production quality. Looking forward to more videos and great success on your channel.
Just a heads up for those in the UK, Fabio is using American terminology. In the UK this stitch is the half treble.
Thank you 🙂
Our next big SuperStar......Fabio!!! Brilliant!! Yahoo!! We will all learn something new and exciting! Thank you!
Creative Grandma sent me here. You are excellent at explaining and teaching. I have been afraid to make garments, but I already feel like I want to try your method. Thank you Fabio for being brave enough to just go for it.
I am happy that Juan the yarn addict said to check out your channel and give you a chance. Juan is great about supporting new comers and other yarn craft channels. Nice job! Keep up the good work. 😊
Thank you so much!!! I too don't always like to follow patterns. Your approach fits me perfectly. As a retired teacher I really appreciate your teaching style. Excellent structuring of the lesson!!! Your personality and good looks make it even more exciting. Fabio, you are quickly becoming a crochet superstar!!! Love and Light, Linda
“But Fabio…”. I just love this conversation you have with us.
Thank you Fabio, to show me some new stitches. In Germany we say: You are never too old to learn something new. That's true.
Ciao ❤thank you for part 2, you will have to make a Facebook group or do some you tube lives !
I never thought about neck shaping in this way.
Brilliant!😊
I have never liked foundation stitches but you explained that you get more stretch, which makes sense for some projects like sweaters! Thank you!
Also, great job with your videos! Background music is nice and not overpowering. Your cuts are very smooth. And I enjoy the content! This is great!
Your videos are great! You are one of the first people I have seen to hold your working yarn exactly the way I do!
Wow! You have learned to make an excellent tutorial quickly! I am a male crocheter as well, but I’ve never attempted a sweater. I am eager to give it a try. Thank you for this inspirational video!
He's doing great right!?! I think he was also smart in providing his Intro video first (I subscribed then - with notification of his upcoming videos!). I haven't made a sweater yet either, but mostly because I haven't been pleased with the crochet stitches used for crochet sweaters. When I saw photos of Fabio's sweaters - I thought 'OK....I'm not a dude, but this guy is saying what I've been saying for years!'. I am optimistic there is a crocheted sweater in my future too!! 👍 😉 🤞
Yes! There is! ❤️
Beautifully filmed and well explained. I love how you don't just give us the stitches, rather you explain why you do them and then walk us through how to. Awesome job.
Hi Fabio, this video was very informative. You did a great job with much more confidence than your first videos. 🤭 You're going to do great and I see your channel growing very quickly! Have fun on your journey 🌹✌️
That was a very professional informative video Fabio, thank you. I've crocheted for many years, but found new ideas here. I did have to rerun several times before I got the idea of how you looped your yarn on the crochet hook to start your foundation row, perhaps you could consider showing that stage several times, as you do the stitch itself.
Good work, I look forward to seeing your next video.
You are very good at explaining not only the what but also the why. I very much enjoy your style of tutorial. Definitely looking forward to future videos!
Thank you for explaining the differences in the anatomy of the stitches in a man’s sweater vs. a sweater I make for myself or another woman. I had never considered that before!
Hi Fabio ! Juan The Yarn Addict sent me ! Anxious to learn how to make men sweaters. For my son. ❤❤
Look at you almost to 4k😀❤
Amazing tutorial and looking forward to more and more.
Perfect blend of info & humor. Love your aproch and you will be setting new records soon! ❤🍾
** I keep a Pro Tip folder open for all to see. Contains cool ideas and useful info I come across.
More need to see this video cause it's a great way of understanding stitches, how they work, drape and how important swatches are.😀❤
Hi Fabio! Thank you for the excellent video! I thought I knew all about crochet but you just taught this old duck😹something new! 🥰🧶🇿🇦
Hello Fabio. I just watched a video by "Creative Grandma" and she told her subscribers all about your channel. Premier Yarns is very happy for you, and we will be following all your videos! Good Luck!!!
Fabio, I've seen your work on fb for ages and so glad you've decided to share your process with the world. So excited to make my own version as I'm an amply built guy and finding good well fitting patterns for someone with my build us almost impossible!!! If I have any constructive comments it's simply that that may be the best yarn for the actual piece but it doesn't demonstrate well on screen. Otherwise I'm absolutely on board as a subscriber!!! X
Ok…now I’m anxiously waiting for the REST of these vids!!! Well done, Fabio!!! Keep going!
Very much appreciate the voice overs as you create each stitch. Other tutorials are no voice and just watching stitch creation. I need to hear what’s happening, how each stitch is forming. BIG THANK YOU! ❤
Love love love your videos! I hope to make a sweater for my husband. thanks so much! Such a joy to watch.
Hi Fabio, Creative Grandma aka Glenda sent me over. She's right your channel is great. I'll look forward to seeing more from you. I love the HDC stitch, it's my favourite too 🥳💙
Very nice Fabio, can't wait for your next video
This is perfect. Incredibly I just bought 4 balls of the exact yarn from Loops and Threads you use. I bought it thinking I would use it when I found an appropriate project. I just loved the feel and weight. Little did I know.......😂. Awaiting your next video 😊
lol. HDC is my favorite stitch. 👏👏👏
You just showed up in my timeline and I subscribed right away, but Juan the Yarn Addict also mentioned you. I've been crocheting and knitting for a looooong time. I love this fresh approach to teaching. I'll make something that someone will like I'm sure.
Fantastic tutorial! I have been crocheting for quite a while, but still learned so much. I never thought I'd say this but I feel like making swatches! I have wanted to make a sweater for years, but frankly I don't like many of the crochet designs because they look so bulky. I'm hoping that your instructions will help me to make a woman's sweater that I actually like. Your designs are so beautiful! Congratulations and applause on your new channel!
Very good explanation! I suggest zooming in when showing the actual stitch & swatches.
Sorry I did not finish my comment. It is so hard to learn to do new things. Your instructions are very clear. I will not be making men’s sweaters, but am sure what you are teaching will work as well with a woman’s sweater. Thank you and the best to you.
Congratulations on your new venture and may you find a comfort and enjoyment of this chapter in your life. I watch Juan the yarn addict and Fiber Spider, I really enjoy their channels and have learned so much, again Congratulations and welcome.
I've never heard swatches explained that way!... I might have to start swatching lol
Thankyou. Very well explained... I gotta go get some yarn!! 😀❤
I'm even getting some ideas of what to do with all the swatches I'll end up with!!
Hello Fabio
WELCOME
Creative Grandma shouted you out
Thank you ✨🧶✨I have my husband,3 sons and 2 grandsons and with Christmas not that far away I think I’m going to be busy🤣
Very well done, dear Fabio. You were worried for nothing in your last videos that you might be too excited and wouldn't be able to do it properly. You presented it in a very well-structured and understandable way. I'm looking forward to more videos from you. By the way, the way you crochet your jumpers is the same way I've been knitting mine for many years. As I can no longer knit so much for health reasons, I have switched to crocheting and enjoy watching your videos. All the best for the future and keep up the good work 👍
❤ awesome job with your explanations you make it look so easy and fun. Your personality is wonderful and upbeat ❤ nice smile to 😊
I have learned that 4.5 is G+. when you sampled the sweater crocheted with J hook with a thumbs down you sold me. love your sense of humor. I use front and back stitch quite a bit. you are doing a great job!
Thanks, Creative Grandma, for sending me here! Awesome information!!!
Hi Fabio! Look at you.,.do professional now. 😃👊🏼 This is a great video and looking forward to the next one. I dearly love that sweater in your intro…distinguished looking. Ciao for now.
I can't wait to make a sweater following your videos! Love your easy going clear voice!
Now we know why Italian Fashion is beautiful and fits great!! Attention to details… !!! Artistic!! Creative!!
Sooo much I have no words for, but Fabio exhibits it all so well.
Love your tutorial it’s nice to see the reasoning behind swatching and stitches to use in the way you explain it 👏🏼 Thank you 👍🏼
💯% agree!
Fabio. Hello. Glenda over as well. I love that you’re so detailed in your sharing. So far I’ve only seen men’s clothing. Crocheting men’s sweater will be a treat. I’m glad you’re here. Welcome!
Every single video is AMAZING. Thank you ♥️
Your videos are improving by leaps and bounds. I like where you are going with this.
Great job. 👍 ❤
Fabio, Fabio! To watch, listen and see you create is like the best fruit picked from the tree. Yes, i know that sounded cheesy...but it is the truth. I have been crocheting for over 50 years, and I have mastered and loved everything about it. BUT the one thing I have never been able to master is a men's sweater that fit right. I am going to try this one more time, and I know that yours will be the one that I will conquer with positive results. You are truly an artist, and professor of the art. Thanks SO much for sharing your artistry and love of the needle with all of us!
Richard
Great video Fabio. I've kitted sweaters for myself, but never crocheted one. I like the idea of not having to follow a pattern and have the it all figured out beforehand just to make it fit. I've only been doing crochet for about a year now and I'm ready to tackle a sweater. Thanks for starting the channel.
I love this!!! 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽
Hes a dream come true😊

Greetings Fabio. I am impressed with how you word things and how you demonstrate what you are talking about. Well done my yarn friend. Well done. Until the next one....Caio
Just a tad skeptical, but I trust you. Let's create a sweater here! Oh, and how come you're dressed? We talked about this with the very first video...
Wow love the sweaters❤
Fabulous sweaters my friend
I love that you put yourself out there real from the beginning. This video is awesome. Your information makes so much sense. I’ll be along for the whole ride and excited to see the sweater I create. Your sweaters are gorgeous.
Hi Fabio. Great video. You speak very clearly, making it sound easy and your visual tutorial is clear and easy to follow. Can't wait to make a sweater that I like. I subscribed. ❤
Good job, waiting for next video!
That's great. I'm impressed.
Thank you, Fabio!👍
I'm looking forward E 3!
You brought up several points I had never thought of!
Wow! This is a great video. Well put together and very informative. I've been crocheting a longtime. Your video resonates very well to me and what I'm looking for in a mans sweater or cardigan. Keep up the great work. You explained what you are doing and visually i liked the video. Oh the light background music is a nice touch.
Very happy with your video Looking forward to see more .❤🇮🇳
Awesome video. Nicely done! Very informative.
I really like the way you explain things and you give the reason why you do it that way. Makes total sense and I finally saw where to exactly put the stitch marker if needed. I am hoping you will do a crochet along when your channel gets going and show how to make any of your pullover sweaters. Thanks Fabio and also Creative Grandma aka: Glenda for the shout out.
Creative Grandma informed me about your channel. This video is awesome, so informative even for someone who has crocheted off and on for 50 years. But making few garments.
Great presentation today !
I really like how everything's explained to help understand WHY certain things are important, rather than just "this is what you do"
I particularly appreciate hearing about and seeing the swatch comparisons. It really helped me understand there is more to it than 'gauge'! 😉
Fabio, I really enjoyed your insights to treating the swatches like fabric. I never liked the crocheted look of a sweater, but your versions looked like they were knitted and more refined. I also didn’t like the loose look of the stitches and you addressed that as well. Fab job Fabio. You have convinced me to give it a try. You’ve crocheted a better way to make a sweater ❤
I really like your style. My husband is going to be so happy I found you. 🧶🥰
Hi, from creative Grandma’s channel!! Glad to see you!!
Hi Fabio 🤗 so lovely to meet you! Looking forward to crocheting beautiful sweaters for the amazing men in my life! Thank you for sharing! It’s Autumn here in Sydney Australia so this is perfect timing! 🥰🧶🤩
You are a great teacher and inspiration. When I do the foundation row, I always say chain 1 when I pass through the first loop.
You inspired me to make a sweater for my man. And HDC is my fav stitch too. 😊
This is wonderful, thank you so much!
Thank you for the new stitch versions. I've learned how to make chemo caps, and I'm going to try your stiches to make a lighter cap for our warm climate.
Thanks for making these videos! You're 100% correct that the primary function of making swatches is to decide if the drape and texture of the fabric suit the garment you're planning. Just about everyone will say that gauge swatches are to ensure you're getting the number of stitches to the inch needed so the garment will come out the expected size. And, yes, that plays into things if you're following a pattern, but even then, swatch for drape, then adjust the pattern for your unique gauge. I find your take on the hdc through the front loop as the ideal stitch for pullovers is spot on as well as starting with a stretchy foundation stitch instead of a chain. Have you noticed that the overwhelming crochet sweater patterns are open-work flowing cardigans or tunics? I'd bet money it's because of the reasons you cover here in terms of the weight and drape of the resulting fabric. Of course, few men will wear open work patterns, so this, I think, tells us why there are so few patterns for men. I look forward to your perspective on top-down construction as you continue this series.
Hello and welcome to TH-cam. Your sweaters are gorgeous. Truthfully I never thought crochet was ok for clothing but you've made me a convert. I'm sold. Lovely video thank you 😀
Hi Fabio!!😊 a 4.5mm hook is called G+ …. Oh yeah, Juan the yarn addict shouted you out on his Sunday live. I am here for you, subscribing 🥰🥰🥰 sticking with you friend👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I use Susan Bates hooks and they don't make a G+ hook. I find that very frustrating.
Hi @YARNBARF. 👋🏼 I made a mistake, 4.5mm is G+ on Furls hook. My other hooks all say 4.5. Sorry for the bad info. I didn’t even know what G+ was for a year, then I read it somewhere. I felt like an idiot thinking I was using a 5mm. Live and learn.🧶🧶
Love your handle btw. I see you in all my fav channels❣️❣️ See you out on the crochet streets friend, and ALL the things….lol😂
Susan Bates makes the G+ hook. That’s the one I am using to make the sweater you see in my videos. This is the Amazon link to the Susan Bates 4.5 mm hook. Susan Bates Silvalume Aluminum... www.amazon.com/dp/B000QHD7NO?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
i dunno, i think this is gonna be a fun series!
Loved the acting so much!😂❤
I can't wait for the next video.
I love how clearly you explain about swatching and how important it is. In one thing we definitely differ: half double crochet is the stitch I avoid whenever possible, just hate how unpleasant the hand movements are to make it 😄
'Hi' @TuulaMaaria! I'm a subscriber of yours as well as Fabio now! 👍
@@kimbo500 Thank you! 😊
Ti prendi la briga di spiegare chiaramente: bravo!
Creative Grandma is recommending your channel. I already found you and subscribed 😊
Great i will have look at the foundation chain again,it was hard to pick ..but great video i am excited ❤
This is good information, thanks for sharing!
Enjoying your videos. I look forward to more
Luv it! I never much like dk yarn it was always so fiddly, but I like dense stitches and the 4.5 hook, and added plus I like HDC it is my fav stitch. Thank you! I am enjoying your tuts.
I'm also a guy who crochets, but I've never done wearables. Looking forward to seeing how your method works!
Excellent! I really like the way you showed the foundation stitch row. I have tried them before and never had any success with them. Your explanation was so clear, thank you, Fabio! Excited to start the sweater!
Well done 👍🏻 thankyou ❤
From Australia 🇦🇺
Inspirational. Tried making sweaters and ended up giving up. Looking forward to your next video and I am definitely doing my HW!
You got a shout out from Creative Grandma.I just watched ❤️❤️your explanation if stitch anatomy and why you using this particular stitch pattern ❤️❤️
I never make swatches but I undestand the importance of swatches...thanks. I really enjoyed that you explained your thought process! Bravo😊
P.S. I live in The Bronx😊
Hi Zoila
I love your approach to teaching, nice job. I can’t wait to make a sweater!
