Episode 2 - Foundation this!

  • A great-looking sweater begins with strong foundations: 1. what yarn to use; 2. what hook size to use; and 3. what stitches to use. In this episode I will explain how these three pieces work together to create a crochet fabric that's perfect for sweaters. Your homework is to choose the yarn, practice the stitches by making swatches with different hook sizes and select the fabric that displays both tight stitching and good drape. This way you will be ready to start your sweater in Episode 3.

Im so glad there are more men on here and especially one who doesn't cater to the female population. Men's crochet apparel is so underrepresented in this community.

He's doing great right!?! I think he was also smart in providing his Intro video first (I subscribed then - with notification of his upcoming videos!). I haven't made a sweater yet either, but mostly because I haven't been pleased with the crochet stitches used for crochet sweaters. When I saw photos of Fabio's sweaters - I thought 'OK....I'm not a dude, but this guy is saying what I've been saying for years!'. I am optimistic there is a crocheted sweater in my future too!! 👍 😉 🤞

That was a very professional informative video Fabio, thank you. I've crocheted for many years, but found new ideas here. I did have to rerun several times before I got the idea of how you looped your yarn on the crochet hook to start your foundation row, perhaps you could consider showing that stage several times, as you do the stitch itself.
Good work, I look forward to seeing your next video.

I have been crocheting for over 50 years, and I have mastered and loved everything about it. BUT the one thing I have never been able to master is a men's sweater that fit right. I am going to try this one more time, and I know that yours will be the one that I will conquer with positive results. You are truly an artist, and professor of the art. Thanks for making these videos! You're 100% correct that the primary function of making swatches is to decide if the drape and texture of the fabric suit the garment you're planning. Just about everyone will say that gauge swatches are to ensure you're getting the number of stitches to the inch needed so the garment will come out the expected size. And, yes, that plays into things if you're following a pattern, but even then, swatch for drape, then adjust the pattern for your unique gauge. I find your take on the hdc through the front loop as the ideal stitch for pullovers is spot on as well as starting with a stretchy foundation stitch instead of a chain. Have you noticed that the overwhelming crochet sweater patterns are open-work flowing cardigans or tunics? I'd bet money it's because of the reasons you cover here in terms of the weight and drape of the resulting fabric. Of course, few men will wear open work patterns, so this, I think, tells us why there are so few patterns for men. I look forward to your perspective on top-down construction as you continue this series.

I'm also a guy who crochets, but I've never done wearables. Looking forward to seeing how your method works!

Excellent! I really like the way you showed the foundation stitch row. I have tried them before and never had any success with them. Your explanation was so clear, thank you, Fabio! Excited to start the sweater!
