Это не совсем обычный пограничный переход. Между российским ("Верхний Ларс") и грузинским ("Дарьяли") пропускными пунктами расстояние почти 3 км. Дорога проходит по Дарьяльскому Ущелью вдоль русла реки Терек. По пути пересекаются 2 тоннеля, один из которых полностью неосвещённый.
This is no ordinary border crossing. Between the Russian ("Verkhniy Lars") and Georgian ("Dariali") checkpoints distance of nearly 3 km. The road passes through the Darial Gorge along the river Terek. On the way you cross 2 tunnel, one of which is completely unlit.

Well and truly fascinating! The scenery is incredible - such beautiful mountains. Pity the poor traffic crossing in the opposite direction. But if I understand your response below the long queue is due to traffic and road conditions.
The USA is so vast that we're not accustomed to crossing international frontiers. I've driven between Canada and the US and it's not really a problem. Nor is crossing into Mexico from the US. But crossing into the US from Mexico can be a very long wait. I've only crossed back and forth as a pedestrian, a simple process.

The Russia is not small too :) Before certain frontiers I have to go more than one day :)
+autotravelerru - Russia is indeed vast. It has such a variety of landscapes too - mountains, forests, plains, lakes and seacoasts. It would surely take many days to cross it by car but it would be a fascinating drive.
Can I ask please if all of your drives originate in Russia and you drive out to your destinations and back? That would be a lot of driving but you would see so many places and meet so many people.

autotravelerru I have no doubt on it. One day, I'll do a road trip from western europe to Mongolia. And would like to pass through caucasus region.
A lightly modified Land Cruiser should do it. I am sure landscape & people will be amazing all over the trip.

Interesting drive across the border.
Interesting to watch this video. 25 years ago, there used to be a single country, with a road sign showing that you entered Georgia.
But now you have to wait 3 hours to cross the border...

Wow! That's a really long time, and I guess trucks may have to wait even more. How long did it take to go through the Georgian checkpoint?
Roads of Europe (verreme) Yes, you are right. Trucks may wait 1-2 days. To pass Georgian checkpoint it took me about 15 minutes. At Georgian checkpoint driver and passangers pass border separate.

Walls, fences, check points - it recalled me the communist period in Central Europe. Every country was of course a friend of each other (at least in the official propaganda), but oddly, what a great efforts were made to separate one from the other with the greatest walls on the borders!
***** At this place, the wall was built by itself nature. The border runs along the Daryal Gorge and it is very narrow :) (but I understand what you mean).
And the checkpoints... Everything here is very sad while. In this case big queue was due to objective reasons. But when I go to Europe I spend at Belarusian-Poland border more time sometimes. So for me a little has changed.
autotravelerru Thanks for detailed answer! :) You are right, the mountains are impressive! It's a pity that it's necessary to stay in such a long queue also in BY-PL border.. These things should be simpler and quicker :) But when you're already in Poland you can drive without stopping on the borders ;)
***** Fully agree with you. Formalities should be smaller and they should be easy.
Therefore I go to Poland to continue to move easier :) Though, to get to Greece I will still have to pass several borders :(

autotravelerru Yes, you are right - Bulgaria and Romania are not yet a part of the Schengen Agreement, that's why the borders are not opened there. I thank you for the discussion, too! It was very nice to exchange the opinions with you :)
Hello I don't know if you are going to check this comment, or see this. Because you haven't posted in years. I am going to drive from Netherlands to Turkey , from Turkey to Georgia and from Georgia to Russia, Vladikavkaz. Are there any things I should prepare before going into Russia? I have Russian passport, but don't speak the language so well, will this be a problem? Where can I exchange Euro's for Rubles. And my most important question, leaving Russia to Georgia, is it difficult, how long will I be able to leave? Is it possible for Russian passport holders to leave the country in today's situation? Are there also hotels along the highways in Russia? Thank you!

Гы-гы. А я там фоткался. На нейтралке. Меня предупредили, что это строго запрещено, но я сделал это. Это так себе граница. Мы через неё контрабанду везли и ничё. Но места очень красивые. Потом эта дорога поднимается вверх на несколько сотен метров и открываются очень красивые видосы. Очень советую прокатиться по этой дороге до Тбилиси от Владикавказа.

Я когда с ехал в армянском автобусе Самара-Ереван по Грузии (47 армян и я 1 русский) только в районе Верхнего Ларса они там твердили,-Грузинский горы некрасивый, серый. А армянский горы солнечный и светлый. А когда ехали через одну пропасть в Грузии высотой где то с 1 км с фантастическим видом, там все армяне повскакивали с мест и припали к окнам как дети. И от Тбилиси до Еревана я не видел более красивых гор

hugostravels This long queue is not for security reasons, but because of the weather conditions. By the request of the Georgian side transit on this road has been prohibited at night (this occured 6 days before the trip), since they have no opportunity to monitor the situation at this time. Therefore, per night it accumulates a large number of cars.

Со стороны России всегда такой бардак..куча шлагбаума, куча кпп, куча проверяющих и дармоедов..создают искусство пробки и проблемы. Уже сколько лет не желают наладить нормальный переход на границу....пока эти голодные осетины там будут стоять всегда будет бардак.на грузинской стороне гораздо проще и удобнее так как коррупция отсутствует.
Друган,я никак не могу из за российской границы,приехать на родину в Северную Осетию через Грузию.Туда ещё можно проехать,а вернуться в Грузию, ещё и летом- это полная жопа! Сутками люди стоят на границе при переезде в Грузию.А я с детьми,ещё и на самолёт опоздаю.А хотелось бы посетить родинуи детям показать,где я жил и учился .
