  • tomscott.com - / tomscott - In Spijkenisse, in the Netherlands, are a set of small bridges that most of Europe should recognise instantly: because they're the fictional ones from their banknotes, made real as a wonderful piece of public art and infrastructure.

    I like this. Here in the US we should build a big pyramid with an eye on top.

    • @mike4ty4
      @mike4ty4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +445

      DAMN. We should do it RIGHT NOW. Actually it might not need to be all that big -- the bottom part is 13 brick layers. If the bricks are meant to be the size of those on the Great Pyramid in Egypt, that would make them about 70cm. Thus the total height of the bottom is 910 cm, or 9.1 m. The top bit with the eye isn't scored in bricks but it would have to be I think about another 7 bricks so that would make it another 1.4 m on top of that for 10.5 m total height. Now if we want the top to "float", we'd need to not make it out of bricks but instead something very lightweight that could be levitated with electromagnets installed in the pyramid :) For comparison the great pyramid is 146 m tall so our 'mid would be only about 1/14 that height. Pretty doable imo. (The magnets could be turned on and off, so you could have the eye slowly rise at a certain time, then later it settles back in. Oooooo...)
      (And yeah I know I used metric (SI) units there because I think SI is much better than the crap we use here and want to see us use it. But for crappy units the height of the eye pyramid is about 30 ft without the eye part, the eye part itself is 4.6 ft and the total height is 34.6 ft.)

      That pink bridge is the ugliest thing in it, the rest is quite nice, though, the bridges should match the buildings more.

    I've already designed a concept for a bridge in the shape of a Mobius strip that fully functions as such using walkways, suspended monorails, and elevators.

    The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has a somewhat similar story. About 60 years before it was built, the legendary San Francisco eccentric, Emperor Norton I, "decreed" that his subjects build a bridge across San Francisco Bay. Decades after Emperor Norton passed from the scene, the people of California finished this massive double deck structure that combines suspension and truss bridges, along with a tunnel.

    So Europe came up with an abstract concept so everyone would be included and then someone went and claimed it for their own. This feels like metaphor.

    Here's a perhaps an interesting idea. Maybe do a short series on something completely different: a few examples of people treated by government in a way that would make even Kafka facepalm. I bet it will make you visit the Netherlands more often🤣
