    I love Brad Pitt's youthful acting in this movie. The lead roll could've just been acted by an actual younger person, but there's something magical about 2022 Brad Pitt saying the word 'dude.'

    Ok the 17 kills was tone setting. It showed the nonchalant approach the movie had in blending humor and incredible violence.

    • @jacobwansleeben3364
      @jacobwansleeben3364 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, I just feel like it could have been done in a way that was more funny. I watched this movie just last night and I remember when that montage started I thought to myself how funny it would be if we got something like the flashbacks in the Ant Man movies. In those movies there is a quippy, fast-talking Indian character where the movie will do a flashback to things that happened in the past and the guy talking will do narration and person voice-overs. Imagine that during this montage, but also the two 'twins' are also doing the sounds for the weapon hits, explosions and stuff and are having a back and forth at the same time arguing about unimportant things like who killed who, which kills were real and which they just made up, whether one of the deaths was technically a kill or the person just died by accident due to their own clumsyness, stuff like that.

    • @thinkofsomethingcooler
      @thinkofsomethingcooler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agree with OP
      This is not Deadpool
      It’s a very different type of humor
      The violence is supposed to be surprising and bizarre but not necessarily funny
      The entire film is an homage to Guy Ritchie Tarantino and Rodriguez
      The dialogue is not meant to be catch-phrasey, punch liney or break the fourth wall it’s not Deadpool
      It’s meant to be quirky and engaging to draw you in so you’re paying attention when something unexpected happens action-wise
      And the kill counts or violence is not meant to be slapstick or ultra gore
      Like a Guy Ritchie film it’s stylized and and has a slickness to it
      It’s not meant to be like Ant Man
      I’m actually surprised at the amount of things missed in the original review it’s as if he missed the point of the film and all the 90s homages in it
      And he gets some of his facts wrong in the review too I was cringing I had to stop the video

    • @FluteGnome
      @FluteGnome 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also it built the characters back stories and established they are super effective killers, and it established they had rescued the son, this is kind of a big narrative point. So it hit all three targets: Building character, Building The backstory narrative, and Builds the World. Doug has possibly not watched the movie, or is only basing this review off of awful critic reviews he's read, or he didn't understand the movie?

    • @thinkofsomethingcooler
      @thinkofsomethingcooler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FluteGnome I was wondering about the same Qs you asked myself! The 17 kills also showed they felt some remorse for an accidental kill. So much so that one of the twins blocked out the memory of it. Hence the disagreement on the number. This shows that the twins have a code, and are not indiscriminate in who they target without a care for collateral damage. This is important in shaping their character and making them likable. Although they have a mantra to “shoot first and ask questions later” they do not actually do this. Or have the heart to do it...I’m not sure which...and that is why I think they came up w the mantra. To protect themselves.
      There’s a lot to be seen from that montage. Unlike most films which insert montages cheaply as filler just to kill time. Or show passage of time. And those montages are so useless you can leave and go to the bathroom and miss no plot or character development. Also for a film that was a homage to 90s cinema and anime, it seemed Doug wanted the humor to be more “modern” and so as this was likely a wink to the very popular “kill counts” that ppl currently enjoy, I’m surprised Doug did not like possibly the only meme-like part of the film.

    The movie actually reminded me quite a bit of an anime called Baccano! That took place mostly on a train in the 1920s, with several characters with their own storylines being on this train at the same time, intersecting each other at times, until their stories eventually converge at the end.

    just felt like this movie was such a breath of fresh air. the action, writing, and editing were fantastic, the characters were all likable and well developed, in part due to the amazing cast and it really felt like the actors were not only giving the best performance they could but also just having fun with it all which made for an experience that had me gripped and engaged all the way through to the end. there definitely were some minor gripes i had, most of which are addressed in this video, but i feel like the good HEAVILY outweighs the bad here and, in my opinion, DEFINITELY worth a second watch. i went to see it with a friend who was watching it for a second time and they said that there were things that they picked up on that they hadn’t noticed the first time so seems to me there’s plenty rewatchabilty. in conclusion, good movie, me likey, very nice :)

    the part where they recalled the 17 kills I thought was pretty witty I think it implied that they didn't count them out in real time but in from memory. They are making the scene interesting, feels like everything pauses as they count each one and i just imagine they were arguing on the train. instead of giving us dialogue over who they killed they gave us that creative scene, a little bit long though.

      I think it’s because the dialogue and pacing were taken more from Guy Ritchie. And the twins (the dialogue he complained about the most) were quintessential Guy Ritchie characters.
      The slickness of the movie means he was going more for “Lock Stock and Two Smokin Barrels” or “Snatch” than “Pulp Fiction” although there’s some Tarantino essence in there definitely! I highly recommend those Guy Ritchie films if you liked this and you’ll see it’s very similar to “Snatch”.

Every actor is doing a great job, the action is very kinetic and intense, and the characters are surprisingly well-written for a bunch of assassins. I remember really loving the West Ham references. But the best part is probably the cameos. I didn't expect half of the actors who showed up, and I was always genuinely and happily surprised when they did. The only thing that could have been better was the pacing. The acting and action makes it enjoyable throughout the whole movie, but there was a point where it started to feel a lot longer than 2 hours. Overall, a fun watch and would definitely recommend if you're looking for a good time.

    Took my dad to see this, and it was a great time. The repetition really seemed to help him keep track of the multiple storylines and characters, as branching storylines is easy for me to keep track of, but it’s his #1 complaint for most movies. The characters were also all given fun and charming scenes which was a nice divergence from what my parents suggest, which is often grey and depressing.

  • @b3rz3rk3r9
    @b3rz3rk3r9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dude, I just saw it, and this was, like, the smartest stupid Action film I've seen in a good long bit. Everything is so stupidly tightly well knit to where the character web doubles as a safety net, the characters are likeable (my favorites were The Elder, Ladybug and The Twins), the villains were both fun and unbelievably evil to a hilarious degree, that twist actually makes this whole ride make sense (which is a fucking feat for a train ride filled with a bunch of assassins fighting over a briefcase with a Thomas the Tank Engine sticker), and the story's ideas on fate was surprisingly clever and done excellently. The comedy is definitely what makes this whole film a "stupid action" film. It's not bad enough to make me bash my head into a wall, but it at least sets the tone for a dark toned screwball comedy fine enough. Plus, it does add to how downright silly the film is and makes it more fun.
    And when I say that the villains are evil, I mean you will want The Prince deader than Disco. She is not only evil enough to go up to a man and admit to [SPOILER] and then have him [SPOILER], but also do it all woth this smug "Smarter Than You" attitude and that punchable smirk. I guarantee anyone who hasn't seen it: You will be begging for this bitch to be 86'd after knowing her for, like, 10 minutes.

  • @craigcorbet

    A rare almost universal appraisal for one of Doug’s reviews.
    I basically agree with the annoying dialogue point. I noticed it as quickly as he did.
    However when you insinuate that Quentin Tarantino’s dialogue wouldn’t work now - it would have a shelf life - you’re fundamentally missing the point.
    It sounds like you’re suggesting Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown wouldn’t be great if they were made today. That’s not true.
    Even if Quentin’s pop culture references could sound/feel dated, they still work today. They still resonate and build a world you believe in.
    Watching his old movies now, the dialogue is still great. It’s even a highlight of his movies.
    His recent films still have great dialogue. Just because pop culture references might feel old in the future doesn’t mean they’re not timeless.
    The quality of the dialogue is what matters. The longevity.
    Bullet Train’s on-running jokes often weren’t fun(ny) to begin with. So of course they got annoying and distracting.
    I’m not sure how they survived the writers room or test audiences when they weren’t funny the first time.
    Tarantino’s dialogue was great and funny at the time. And they’ve proven they can stand the test of time. They hold up.
    Doug’s inclination to think films only work during certain eras is fundamentally flawed. Films are either good or they’re bad. History might make them seem prescient (Contagion) or cringeworthy (Reefer Madness) in due course. But the films qualities were already there the moment they’re released.

    Honestly my biggest critique is the Wolf. Not only was he taken out within two minutes of stepping on the Train, but 2/3rds in we see that he had the picture of the one who he actually wanted revenge on so it doesn’t really make sense to me why he was trying to kill Ladybug immediately upon seeing him. Maybe it would have been better if there was some misdirection with the Prince or White Death getting him to think Ladybug really was the Hornet, but otherwise the Wolf just felt a tad excessive.
    Other than that, the movie was great, it was funny and I had tons of fun.

    - Minor Spoiler:
    One punchline that never happened really bothered me throughout the film. The character keeps mentioning Thomas the Tank Engine, and there was little to no punchline or payoff towards the running gag. There was a moment in this movie (you’ll know when you see it) where I wished he quoted a line from Thomas, which is “you’ve been a really useful engine”. And it would’ve fit perfectly with a certain character’s sendoff.

And taking it out of context of course people would say "oh yeah, that was weird", but when Brad Pitt is stabbed, and says "you stabbed me?" is actually hilarious when you think about his character - he wants to always talk things through and is trying to look at the world in a more positive light - so when someone's response upon seeing someone to just stab them, it makes sense that his reaction would be "you stabbed me?!"
