This happened when I was on a long hiatus from the internet, and when i wasn't gaming. All of a sudden, I started reading about mass harassment and bizarre screeds about game journalism ethics. I have never heard a coherent and comprehensive narrative of it - before now! We'll done!
As the SBI case currently began and proceeded, there has been an overreaction on the part of SBI and Kotaku to a single Steam group that has negatively affected the credibility of the media. There is still a reflex to cover each other's backs. Had also read that Zoe was to blame for Alec Holowka's ouster through accusations, although there was never any official evidence there.
i think in the end gamer gate didn't really matter it was just that i and many other young men and teenagers only cared about video games and nothing else .so to me this was the first time politics affected me in a more direct way while being old enough to understand it. but the same stuff was happening in pretty much every industry .and if gamer gate never happened there would just be something else and the long term consequences would be the same .
Thanks for shedding some light onto this after 10 years. Despite that, everyone on both sides are still equally at fault. And what about some of today's critics who are still going on about gaming journalism and minorities in gaming? What about those like Stuttering Craig and the Crew of Side Scrollers; Razorfist; Sargon of Akkad; Asalieri (no disrespect); RandomDCE; and the many others that are still complaining about it today? What are your thoughts who still believe in that whole "Get Woke, Go Broke" mantra?
Personally I think it's extremely silly. You would think some of these people would have moved on by now but the money that can be made from grifting is just too good to pass up these days.
And to think, this whole debacle started because someone was salty that his ex dumped him, and used that as justification to spread a malicious rumor as retribution instead of dealing with his problems in a mature and rational matter. Like you I feel alot of embarassment in hindsight for getting myself roped in to this whole flustercluck. (Even if I didn't outright join in on the harassment mob against Quinn, or Wu.) I was young(About 14-16 during this dumpster fire of a saga) and was in a much darker place at the time. (Didn't help that I was also in my MGTOW phase at the time)Granted it still doesn't excuse alot of my beliefs at the time. And like you said, at the end there was no side worth rooting for. Zoe still cheated, the journalists still inadvertadly gave these bozos a megaphone, the bozos still used the rationalization of "Fighting for ethics in journalism" as an excuse to deliberately spread misinformation and rally a lynch mob against someone they didn't like, and grifters furhter down the far-right crazy train used it as a springboard to further their own agenda. Well, let us just pray to whatever deity is out there, that we as a collective species learned our lesson, and would never stoop to something so stupid ever again.(I say knowing full well that stuff like the Hogwarts legacy fiasco, and the recent SBI debacle basically tried to reignight those old flames.)

I gotta throw the side eye at Metokur. It was his series of videos that introduced me to the whole Zoe Quinn thing.
He was far from the only one that got the story wrong in regards to Zoe.

If Eron had kept his emotions in check GamerGate would have never happened and all of the bullshit that followed could have been completely avoided.
