It's admirable how your opinions and stance on things has stayed exactly the same over the years. It's very easy to conform to a public opinions or beliefs in order to attract a wider audience, but sticking to your own moral standards shows integrity. If people only took the time to listen, there would be no argument to your credibility.
In big part I agree with that. Being FOMO'ed into something you find no satisfaction in is a straight way to burn out and depression. Most people need a balanced mixture of both satisfaction and success.
It's certainly a subjective balance. Some people seek satisfaction now, in good scenarios choosing to travel the world and make friends anywhere possible even if they can't ever treat themselves to anything expdnsive. Or well, in a bad scenario, crippling addictions. The counterpoint is to temporarily give up seeking satisfaction, and grinding at something to become wealthy or gain a big advantage in life, so that once you do, you can indulge till your heart is content. Of course there are risks you might never reach a comfortable place, or you might lose track and forget why you're doing it. And of course those are just two extremes, most fall somewhere in between, working an alright job, slowly gaining wealth and treating themselves here and there.
The smoking thing 20:30 It can and WILL affect others around you negatively, I know people that have gotten some form of cancer due to being passive smokers (Being around smokers often). I myself are asthmatic and as it is in my house without any interference I could just be having a hard time breathing and getting enough oxygen into my lungs. Being around smokers will only make that worse and potentially even send me to the hospital simply because I cant get enough oxygen from the air, Not kill me at least I dont think so but still cause harm.
14:30 "There is no correlation between quality of content, and the viewership." No, that is not the assertion he made. He's challenging the *strength* of that correlation, and justly so, and you sort of subconsciously strawmanned him with that statement. When he says 'most people' he means that more people than not who make good content, with good qualities do not get noticed. And he's right. He's right because popularity is not a litmus test for quality, and that's self-evident when you look at who gets the most viewership, what kinds of personalities and people tend to become mega streamers and top this space.. Or better yet, quality is an incredibly disingenuous term to be using here. We wouldn't call the react channels that crop up like weeds 'quality,' nor would we call the text-to-speech reddit story readouts quality, but they do have *A quality* to them: they found a market. Sure, it's swill, it's recycled garbage that leeches good content from other creators, but.. They're the one's getting the viewership, and there's a reason for that. They are exploiting a market, garnering viewership, *succeeding* in grabbing the audience's attention. People don't want to go and watch obscure artist videos: they want to watch someone's reaction to them and be spoonfed. It's self-evident that this is true.. So, you don't need quality to get viewership, or even retain it. You need to find a gap in the market, stick to it, exploit it. You were right about the avenue talk, about certain kinds of content 'capitalizing' on the trends of the time. You saw it with drama channels, Minecraft youtubers, horror game lets players.. Quality varied immensely, but still, youtubers like Leafy or Pyrocynical garnered millions with very lowbrow borderline abusive videos. They rebranded themselves, of course, but let's not forget they mesmerized millions with very cheap, low-effort content. I'll even admit it, I never watched them for quality content. I watched them for literal white noise in the background. To have people talk about something mildly interesting. It could have been anyone's voice. So let's not conflate the tactfulness of a creator in exploiting trends and retaining viewership with the quality of content: they are separate. I will admit that I have seen channels who have stuck to their guns, and continued making quality content jump from nothing to something. I watched Ethan Chlebowski when he just got back from his trip to Mexico, with 100 views on his first video. That kind of integrity being rewarded is rare, but I can see how you might be biased by your experience as well as those of people you know. Just understand you only know what you see.. If you actually read this, appreciate it.
Smoking doesn't just affect the person doing it - it affects everyone around them on the sidewalk, because the smell is disgusting. The worst thing is when you walk behind a smoker at the same pace... In that situation I'll always run forward. I also always hold in air whenever I pass smokers or even cover my nose.
3:22 To be fair, that's kind of a deacription of Twitter now, though. The Fediverse fosters quite a good community, largely in part because it's not a single platform. There are also white supremacists and such, but due to its moderation structure, such users are completely isolated from the rest of the world.
One thing Matto didn't say on discoverability is that Twitch is shit for discoverability, always has been and probably always will be. There's a reason a lot of creators post to YT and TikTok as that's where the actual audiences are and then you funnel them into Twitch
13:35 the guy you raided today was right in that 50-100 viewer range and earned a follow from a bunch of your viewers including myself. Absolutely correct.
Hey I still remember that "should you raid small streamers" ramble. I agree with Matto. It certainly would be nice to believe that every single small creator is a diamond in the rough, doing everything right, just waiting to be discovered, but obviously that is not the case.
15:00 Matto getting angry at a viewer for something he assumes the viewer meant again. What the viewer said was: "Suggesting that every stream with 0 viewers is bad quality isn't fair. A stream with 0 viewers CAN have better quality than one with 50 viewers." It is unlikely, but it plays into the whole "You only get big if you've been big already"-problem that streaming plattforms per se have.
I donated to your stream for the first time ever today. Enjoyed watching red dead and asking questions from it. I honestly cant wait to donate more, you host a wonderful community Matto ❤
I hear again that youtube struggled to get to profitability. It was as profitable as they wanted it to be at every step. Companies can't just make profit as soon as possible, because then investors will say it's a flash in the pan, or they'll expect it to have similar growth the next year. There's a list longer than my arm as to why companies want to see increases every year, instead of full-on natural growth It's not even unusual to see companies sabotage themselves to burry an increase in profits (not to say all obvious self sabotages are for this reason though, like warner brothers)
i once paid for an autograph, from Jesse actor from The Fast and The Furious, and honestly it's a great deal, i could never meet him or any actor of the first movie irl, and this movie defined my childhood, it was something like 20$, and i bet that's close from the cost of the delivery only as it was shipped from USA to France, so yeah, paying for autograph is cool for some context (+ he did the autograph on a beautiful picture including every character from the movie and the picture only is cool)
I know that Matt has already addressed this, but the old rambles just seem like they're of a far higher quality than the new ones. The new ones feel scripted, like a talk-show where he has all his topics lined up in advance for him. I know the old ones aren't going to come back, Matt is a different person, and focuses more on making content during his streams, but I just wish he would go back to rambling more about such topics on stream, as unlikely as that may be.
Damn he snapped at mystic. Viewership might be correlated to quality, but not necessarily the quality of the content the streamer produces, could just be the quality of the content they're reacting to lol
It is not like 50 viewer streams are really succesful but something good probably is happening since they have managed to get 50 viewers. 50 viewer stream being raided still gives them an oppotunity to grow.
