In the world of Hollyweird, you have to play ball in order to make it to the big leagues. However, Monique was ahead of her time and wanted to move herself in the ladder with no attachments. So when you're in the entertainment industry and not playing ball which means (Obey and you shall receive a reward) of slavery type of control for actors and actress, It comes a time when few entertainers vocally stating things that are in their minds. Now, they are within their rights to do so but the circumstances of their opinions in times comes with criticising the tops or middle bosses of the industry, and so-forth they are treated with stranger type mood from all corners of the industry. Monique's case is not that different.
In other words, she is hard to control and they don't like that.

With Lee, then sold that movie with Daniels to Perrys Lions Gate...get her big PAY DAY and residuals for many years. Show up as a partner & not and employee, you'll get more respect.

People forget Viggo Mortensen was paid $500,000 to do all three LoTR films over several years. The actors had to sign to do all three films at the same time. The series did several billion in revenue and those actors (white, btw) got peanuts...because that was the deal. None of them knew it would be a huge hit. Jackson later threw them a bone in the form of bonus checks, but they made very little despite being in such a hugely successful series.

I remember this clearly when it burst open.
I've lost respect for Lee Daniels.
First of all, you don't throw your actors under the bus for whatever reason.
Which is basically what he did to Monique a few years after she won the Oscar for her memorable performance in "Precious".
He basically told the world on CNN he was blacklisting Monique for failing to promote Precious prior and during its theatrical run.
A director just doesn't do that to his actors.
No matter, he should've worked out their differences in private.
He also soured Monique's relations with Oprah and Tyler Perry, the two biggest purveyors of black talent in Hollywood.
Granted Monique's not the easiest person to talk to and her business decisions were badly mishandled by her husband/manager.
It's just sad a big talent like Monique has to do stand-up to make a living when she should be getting plum roles going to other black actresses.

Monique's performance is 'Precious' was Mesmerising... she deserved her Oscar no doubt... ALSO, Actor's don't get paid because of talent or "they made the movie good". Or, atleast, it's not that simple. Films have investors, who get their money first, before anybody else. It's like having a stake in a company. Monique didn't invest a dime in the movie, so, it makes sense that she only got what she got. Besides, the oscar she earned from the movie is alot more valuable than whatever else. If she wanted to earn more, all she had to do was had it drawn up in her contract that she gets a certain percent from the proceeds which is what most big stars do. Sandra Bullock who happens to be one of hollywoods biggest stars, and was the highest earning actress last year with 50M dollars actually didn't earn a dime upfront for GRAVITY, so only got paid AFTER the movie was released because she made sure to include that minor detail in her contract. Now, can we stop arguing and get along?

If you attach yourself to a project and is one of the leads in a film, you should know that you should support that project in its entirety. go to the premieres, do the interviews, go to the festivals. you get hotel and travel accommodations but you don't get paid for it. many people, actors, writers, producers and so forth have multiple projects going on at the same time but you still make the time because it's their/your project that they/you are involved in. not sure if Monique wanted to do that or wanted to be "paid" for it, but owe your film that loyalty and not just wash your hand's clean after the movie wraps. it tells everyone else that you do not care.

Does an Actor winning the Oscar's raise pay
Yes, but not by as much as you’d think. It can take a few years to be able to fully capitalise on an Oscar win and the buzz normally fades within three years.
There is evidence to show that male actors benefit more than female actresses from an Oscar win. The average salary increase for actors winning Best Actor is $3.9 million, whereas it’s just $500,000 for a Best Actress win.
Reese Witherspoon is an oft quoted example of someone for whom an Oscar has little advantage. At one point she was one of Hollywood’s best paid stars but by the time she won her first Best Actress award in 2006 (for Walk The Line) her star was already beginning to fade. The award appears to have had little to no positive effect on her career and it’s only been her recent efforts as a producer which have helped her regain her power in Hollywood.

I didn't recall she was the one that acted in Precious from which she won an academy award. I got to this video because I just saw a movie (Blackbird) in TH-cam in which she was acting, and I was impressed with her acting.
So, in my opinion she is totally right. We all must agree that she is the one who decides regardless it's right...or well paid.. or if it has good scripts etc or not. I must trust her opinion and "good eye" cause she choose to work on Precious.
She is now in the position to say "Show Me The Money". As for ANY job, you get paid more for having EXPERIENCE & TALENT, so why she shouldn't? I liked the way she responded to the guy when he told her something like "it's about the money". She answer something like " well, we all agree nobody works for free". TRUE!!!

You have not worked for over 5 years after winning the most prestigious award in the world for acting. And you mean to tell me that when roles are coming in you are turning down roles because you felt you had to take a stand for the those behind you? I am not buying it! Just like Cuba Gooding (who turned down Amistad)....you automatically assumed you were officially in the Big Leagues and you wanted more money to justify you. You were not thinking of anybody else. There has been plenty...I mean plenty of actress that won Best SUPPORTING Actress. Remember we are talking Support not Leading. That did not exactly move on to the most prestigious career but they kept acting because it was what they enjoyed doing. I'm going to be a little mean now...you were giving a role that was easy for you to play. Now...had that been a role that you played a successful business woman, mentally disabled, victim role, or even a woman who was proper and prissy you would not have been selected. The character was ghetto and that style is what you built your career on...in stand up and acting! So, stop acting like you played this major role that was out of your element and won the award based on that. Your denial is going to keep you unemployed even longer!

If things happened the way she says it did, then ppl shouldn't blame her for speaking up. Would anyone here accept a promotion for the same pay they were previously getting? If a request or demand is made of you and you respectfully decline, is it right that you should be punished?
When ppl say you have to play the game as a response to something that just isn't right, it's frustrating. All that it implies is that you can work hard effectively and efficiently but if you don't smile the way every other person does, it doesn't matter.

I think that in 2017, for her to still be making a big deal about this situation, it reflects poorly on her. Like, we just want to see Monique work and win, because she's talented and she's so beautiful. Nevertheless, in watching this video from 2015, I certainly understand where she was coming from. She made her choice according to what she felt was best for herself and her family, and that's commendable. I aslo think that it takes A LOT of courage for someone to speak out against an institution as major and powerful and far reaching as Hollywood/the entertainment industry. Like, it trickles down into all areas of our lives, all over the world. And she had the guts to expose its dirty laundry! I cannot imagine the courage that took, especially as a woman and a Black woman.

Monique isn't Halle Berry, she won 1 Oscar on a low Budget Film this interview was done in 2015 and now in 2017 she is still saying I have been Black balled and took a Financial hit, she should of done the interviews and she wouldn't be in the shape she's in now, you have to play the game everyone knows that, you haven't arrived from winning 1 Oscar it was just the beginning and Monique messed herself up listening to her husband

Pay Inequality is Real. Historically black women in Hollywood have always been under paid (working for pennies) while our counter parts are get paid big dollars, pay inequality is not isolated issue. Keep your ears open at your place of work. I know its a white women on job with no credentials and experience but Jethro hired and promoted Elle Mae over you and other black women who are more qualified for the position.

They absolutely pay for actors to do press. You think they paid Vin Diesel $53 million dollars to say the line "I am Groot" because nobody else could utter the line? Of course not.

Shawn Dowdy You should hope EVERY Black actor gets paid their worth, not just A-Listers. Also, you can't really put a dollar amount on someone's worth or talent. The very idea is pretty insulting but you can estimate what an actor or actress should make given particulars about the industry.

You don't have to "play the game." Its not hardcore racist in hollywood anymore like the 50's. Actors like Denzel and Don Cheadle are mostly in movies directed and produced by white people. Spike Lee directed alot of "white films." Hallie Berry won her oscar for Mosters Ball that was directed by a white guy and would be considered a "white film." Samual L Jackson has been robbed at the oscar numerous times, but he's one of the greatest actors of all time who stars primarily in "white films." There are alot of great black actresses's who are overlooked for sure. Tyler Perry is making money, but is he helping black Hollywood? I don't know, I think the racial divides are slowly becoming non existent, the newer generations are smarter and more informed and more connected. All disconnect is fading. I don't think Tyler Perry is the future, I think he's the last of a dying breed.

" you gotta play ball'' later for LEE Daniels . Blacks need to go fund me projects with Spike Lee and others that are not pushing the GAY agenda exclusively. Monique is a sister that needs our support . Empire is step and fetch 2015

I know, right? A flight to Cannes and a stay in a 5 star hotel is just so haaaard! I just don't know how these actors make it through the day! What a horrible life they lead.
Excuse me. The majority of Americans don't make $50,000 A YEAR working 40 hours per week. This whale did a few weeks of work and had people who make minimum wage kissing her ass the entire time she was on set. She was PAID WELL. When you sign a contract, the language in the contract stipulates that you do publicity. If you can't meet your obligation, there are PLENTY of actors who can do just as well as she did. She's not even an A list level actress.

agreed. considering the prep time for a film. the research. AND THE PROMOTION. and sometimes you have to do "pickup shots" after you think it's over. 50k doesn't even come close considering the average american makes 30k a year for one job
