This product spotlight comes courtesy of TSG Train Crew member James Brassill, who loaned his recently-acquired tunnel motor to TSG for this episode. This is the Scaletrains.com Rivet Counter HO Scale SD40T-2, with ESU LokSound v5 DCC and sound.
    From Scale Trains' website:
Due to their rugged operating environment, stretching from the Pacific coast, to the Sierra Nevada, to the deserts of the Southwest, Southern Pacific Railroad, and its subsidiary, the St. Louis-Southwestern (aka Cotton Belt), weren’t shy about ordering specialized equipment. The famed AC-series “Cab Forward” articulated steam locomotives were one example, designed with tunnel and snowshed operation in mind. Partway into SP’s diesel era, the tunnels and snow sheds common on the western half of the system would again prove to be an operational headache, thanks to locomotives overheating during long pulls in their cramped confines. Once they overheat, thermostatic controls would automatically make the unit reduce its output, or even shut down altogether, resulting in a loss of horsepower that may be enough to stall the train...

Let's hope that Scale Trains makes some of these SD40T-2s in N scale as well.

John did you see the detail in the horn casting?? I think sometimes railroads would put cloth over the air horn probably so dust and other things don’t get in the internals of the air horn. But the horn has the ruffles of fabric actually molded in! It looks really cool!

I was going to point that out too. Also, another cool detail added by Scale Trains is the A/C condensation drain tube that comes down out of the front number board and hugs the contour of the nose right in front of the engineer's windshield. Scale Trains brings the details.

Not my era but this locomotive looks pretty good

ScaleTrains is my favorite. Great runners, awesome detail, LokSound 5, and capacitors standard. They are the current benchmark in my opinion. They just need to make some 4 axle locomotives and steam now.

If you want my opinion on it, they run good, the detail is nice, although for rivet counter, the details are still off if you do true Rivet counting + color shades tend to be wrong, loksound 5 is nice, and the capacitors are great to have out of the box.

@@njandparailfan6332 I'm just starting in the hobby, but I know eventually I will look at those details more closely. Great thing is, all manufacturers seems to be bumping up their game steadily which is great for us modelers. regards, NS.

Looks great if you’re modeling the late 90s/early 2000s.

ScaleTrains are the best? I wish they do more N scale locomotives tho.

Great review. I'm one of those people that appreciate the already-added details out of the box. I love model railroading and operating my layouts, but I'm not patient when it comes to adding details to things like locomotives. However I would like my trains to look as realistic as possible, so I gladly pay a little extra if that work has already been done for me.

    really sweet looking loco.
I like the site window on the Engineer's side as well.
only thing to make it better, A roof that just comes off so you can add People to the cab.

The one thing I just wish manufacturers would do is make the handrails out of brass. It’s annoying when you’re working on or handling the engine and the long handrails bend and are stuck bent. MTH was the only one who used brass wire and I will miss that.

Give me the Athearn RTR, and I'll be happy.

Something I didn't see I don't know if it's there or not but on the front of the locomotive there should be a big red M U cable.
