  • After using the Denon DJ Prime GO for several months, and also using it in real gig situations, I wanted to report back on my thoughts. Can this REALLY be used as a "pro" controller?

    Really good video about the device, thank you for that! I was wondering: Why did you think there would not be a new version ‘anytime soon’. And, since this video is from a year ago, do you think there will be a new one quite soon? Cause I’m thinking of buying one, but of course it would be a bummer is a new one appears within say half a year of course. Btw, I subbed!

    Absolutely BRILLIANT overview Phil and I couldn't agree more, it's the little quirky things that they really do need to fix. One point that I'm staggered you didn't pick up on and is BY FAR my biggest gripe about this product is this: Many DJ controllers really do not cater properly for use of Microphones and will often be fitted with a standard quarter inch jack, or maybe one of these alongside an XLR input (as is the case with Denons MC6000 MkII) They have clearly thought about this here, hence the inclusion of TWO XLR Balanced Inputs. GREAT so far. So you plug your mics in, and what is the first thing you do with your Mics? Yes that's right, you EQ them . . . except on this unit . . . you can't! UTTERLY CLUELESS on Denon's part here. Why on earth would you equip such a unit with XLR Mic inputs yet not extend them basic EQ controls? There is also an extensive effects unit built in as well, and surprise surprise, this can't be used by the Mic channels either! Mr Holland wrote below about Denon listening to their users. Sorry but they really DON'T. This point was brought up in one of their product showcases OVER A YEAR ago and they acknowledged it. Was it actioned? NO! I am lost for words as to why Denon would release such a product with such a serious flaw. I have spoken to their technical department a few times and have been assured that this is being "looked into" however I'm sadly not holding my breath :(

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe they can add some kind of EQ within the firmware. To be fair there are EQs on the larger models. I am not a big microphone user and I’m happy to use it with just a volume control.

    Hi Phil, you said the jogwheels are fine but on the last Balcony Beats set I didn't see you really using them (?)
    Is that because you had everything perfectly prepped in advance, and/or because everything was synced?
    Just starting out after a couple of decades 'off' maybe I misunderstand just how much DJs use the new tech to make everything much simpler/smoother, but the first thing I want to do is get my beat matching back up to speed (with waveforms/BPM etc hidden) so jogs are very important to me. Cheers!

    You mentioned this is not a good controller for beginners, which I am one. The reason I chose it was because I didn't need to use a laptop with it. At home in my home music studio, I use an external 27" monitor with my laptop because I'm almost blind, and though I can physically see the laptop screen, I can't use it "productively." I was hoping that the Prime Go with its 7" onboard display will be big enough. Once it arrives, the first order of business will be to give it the "vision" check. So I'm curious why you don't otherwise thinks it for me.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is fine, just it is different than most devices, so may not be the obvious first choice for the typical beginner - which you're not! Give it a go. You may love it.

  • @steveworrell
    @steveworrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure I follow why the shift+cue thing is needed. Not denying others might want it I just can't think of a time when I would ever need that feature. Just so I understand it fully; when I load a track I find the start of the track, set the cue then thats it, the track plays until the end. Maybe it's the sort of music I play but I rarely if ever need to set a cue somewhere else in a track on the fly.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, simply a fast and easy way to return to the start of a track if it doesn't already have a cue point there. Standard behaviour on nearly all DJ gear.

    I bought the Prime Go and had it for about 2 weeks... It was a great unit BUT I exchanged it for a Prime 2 instead for 3 reasons
    1.) There are no channel VU meters so you have to adjust volumes of each channel by ear.
    2.) The post mix FX are garbage IMO, they muddy the sound and create these annoying boosts in volume, sometimes as high as 6DB.
    3.) Cue monitoring only allows for previewing channel against the master - you cannot preview FX signals, you just have to wing it every time you use the FX.

    Hi Phil, i like the look of the prime go! I’m currently DJing with a Reloop Beatpad with an iPad Pro 12.9 which was fab! Until Djay took away the option to stream music via spotify, so i think this unit would be great as i could hook up my 6TB external hard drive with ALL my music on! But my question is, What’s the mic channel like? Ie does it sound good? As the mic channel on the Beatpad is RUBBISH! It sounds damn awful, theres no bass, mid, treble, and it sounds flat! so i have to run the output of the Beatpad into a small audio mixer that has a mic channel with mid, top and bass! I do a lot of mic work while DJing so it is crucial i have a great quality mic sound! Thanks

    • @digitaldjtips

      Mic channel is fine on the Denon, you can hear me using it on my Balcony Beats livestreams. That said there is no mic EQ, which is a big omission.

Yes I heard you using the mic on the balcony on Sunday! & yes it sounds ok, my beatpad sounded fine also via my home sound system & while live streaming, but when I used it at my venue via the loud sound system it sounded awful! @@loveispower2997 This has been answered above? You simply cannot say that one is "better" than the other as they are two COMPLETELY different things. I owned a Roland DJ707m for a couple of months and was extremely disappointed with the build quality of it. It feels cheap and nasty. The Denon on the other hand feels like a proper professional piece of kit. You really do need to ask yourself whether or not you need, or want to be using a laptop? If the answer is YES then you need to look elsewhere. if you don't then this unit definitely deserves consideration. There is however one MAJOR flaw in this unit, which I have outlined in my comment above. Hope this helps :)

    A big heads up, Despite all of the things Prime Go can do it can't separate the VU on the master meter for individual channels.
    This thing is a piece of crap if you can't even level your music. Buy something else until Denon gets their act together.

      Fact is it doesn't seperate channel VU . For 1000 dollars that should probably be a thing. Double when you consider that the Numark Mix Stream Pro, A clearly not marketed at PRO DJ market has this feature and also uses the same Software as the 4,2, and Go.
      Glad you love your Prime Go Digital DJ Tips, I think it sucks. Had I known this about this piece of gear ahead of time I never would have bought it.
      Now between your channel, and every other GO video on You tube. Reviews on Guitar Center, ZZsounds, Sweetwater, and Musicians friend. I feel like I've done my part to inform people of this issue they clearly have no way or no will to fix.
